Sony is making a bold bet on an African gaming startup to boost PlayStation’s reach in the continent

“As large companies like Sony that have really strong footholds in tier-one and tier-two markets start thinking about where the next billion customers and gamers are going to come from, our pitch is that Africa is a prime market for that,” Robbin-Coker told CNBC in an interview.

“We believe very firmly that there is an incredibly underrated console opportunity in Africa,” Robbin-Coker said, citing countries like Nigeria, Morocco and Algeria as places where console adoption is rising a lot.

Sony is coming into an emerging gaming market with blistering growth potential. Sub-Saharan Africa’s gaming industry is expected to generate over $1 billion for the first time in 2024, according to research from Carry1st and venture capital firm Konvoy.

Many gamers in Africa are buying consoles on “gray” markets — in other words, from vendors who’ve imported consoles from overseas to resell them locally, Robbin-Coker added.

Amazon's path to continuous growth was reach first, and then subscriptions. Game platforms need to be the same way.

Before a subscription model, Playstation should get market relevance in Africa and South Asia. Then throw on little subscriptions like PS+ Essential, or perhaps a model where there is a 10% across the board discount for microtransactions. This is essentially how Amazon works - loss leading discounts on things you want (shipping), incidental benefits (streaming), and a compulsion to constantly engage the ecosystem.

Sony: PLEASE invest in Brotherhood Games. That studio is really good at adventure games, as well as sci-fi/horror and dystopian fantasy/sci-fi settings.

I could see them doing something neat as a point-and-click isometric adventure/puzzle game crossing over the Stasis and Horizon universes in a way, for example.

Yeah this dev and their games deserve a way bigger audience. With Sony/SIE backing & investing in them, I could see them finally get it, and maybe up the presentation factor while staying true to their roots the way Housemarque did with Returnal.

Hopefully they're on Sony's radar.

A game about Africa should be about one of the tons of dictators they have. Could be the start of a COD competitor.

As someone who lives in (South) Africa...as cool as it would be, our entertainment and imagination here is kind of bland, while yes there's some fun historic events and myths to pull from.

We tend to not really do much more story wise then, poor person who becomes a gang member/soldier...

That's like 90% of the stories that get told here in plays/movies/art

Really smart play by Sony here. It's how you keep growing the base with each generation. They done this before in western Asia. So this makes alot of sense.

eh, not really. The Zulus were the only warring tribe so it's pretty easy to win fights when you are the most aggressive tribe, the san and bantu myths are no more wild than other myths.

One opens studios around the world, and another buys up studios around the world and closes them. Clear to me who actually cares about the gaming market.
