Sony Corp will branch out into the real-estate business in August and plans to take the unit public in three years, the Nikkei reported without citing a source.

Sony recently set up a real-estate unit in Tokyo, with the aim of generating annual sales of 50 billion yen ($488.4 million) in five years, the newspaper said.

The real-estate foray marks the first initiative of a new project team at Sony that specializes in creating new businesses and aims at developing more than 10 new businesses over the next three years, the business daily reported.

It will go well with their insurance business.
Which is their most profitable field

Also, cost of PS5 to require taking out a 2nd mortgage confirmed?

I thought the real estate business (like they speak of here) requires large amounts of cash and holdings to break into, or is that just the financing side of it? How is a company like sony paying for this?

Wait, instead of selling their existing properties, couldn't they have spun off those properties to a subsidiary real estate company in order to extract profits? A lot of grocery chains up here in Canada did exactly that.

I thought Sony was consolidating their efforts to focus on the stuff that actually make money. This sounds like a real shaky business move.

Hmmm this actually isn't a bad idea. With the influx of new startups being announced almost every hour, this might be a new booming business. Hmmm, for a tech company, this is intriguing. I'll reserve my judgment when it it's actually becomes a reality.

It's funny because it's like after selling several of Sony's office buildings to pump revenue someone at Sony said "we have a real knack for this, let's make it our day job."

Collateral and credit.

Investors, institutional credit, cash on hand.
