Sony trying to prevent scalping for 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro in Japan

"Buyers must have a PlayStation Network account registered within Japan and at least 30 hours of playtime in any game(s) on a PS4 or PS5 clocked between February of 2014 and September 19, 2024. It certainly sounds like a system that regions outside of Japan would've benefited from."

That's a good way to handle that.

There are a lot more people who want this than they made. They can't stop people from selling the system after it gets delivered and it will be sold for insane mark up.

I don't even understand why they made so few. Just release it as a new color scheme, like Nintendo used to do with N64s or whatever. Sell it with a markup, it's just more profit.

Seems like a trial. If successful they will probably implement that globally. I would personally add some more restrictions, like having certain trophies, monthly game time or even active ps plus subscription, etc.

Oh, man, you don't really know how hard it can be when Japanese groups really want to protect fans. Try getting a ticket for an AKB48 theater performance or a SixTones fan club meeting, you need a Japanese credit card, a Japanese ID with a Japanese address and a Japanese phone with a contract that has been active for over a year, you need to enter a lottery, win it and then the ticket is printed with your name. They could tie the console serial number with your account and only let it register with it for a year or two (just like a mobile phone contract) if they wished.

It's a work around now since it's new, but that's it.

Scalpers will just start creating ghost accounts with 30h of gameplay time and keep them alive.

Similar to what an insane amount of gacha games already do. You can get "fresh accounts" full of resources and in-game currency, with thousands of login days already made, instantly.

Dissallow exactly 30h. And 30h only on one game. I mean it's easy to catch these things.

It's a start, but they should lean far harder into the account activity than that.

- yeah, with only 12k units it should jave been very easy to vet sales to active accounts.

- yeah, not sure why they limited it to 12k. Such a great bundle & fair price for a limited ed product.

Just take all orders for the plates from everyone that wants one. We miss out on the box. Can't believe the factory making the side plates can't put out another 300k, it's putting everything together as a standard SKU that impacts the supply chain.

Seriously, what kind of celebration is this. Remember the celebration where you missed out on a raffle? No, because that's not much of a memory.

They should just set up bidding system on their site for this kind of thing.

As long as there are way more people willing to buy something than there is supply, the price is going to go up. Better to handle it naturally than leave it to scalpers.

It’s not more “fair” to resolve the supply/demand gap through a person’s willingness to monitor the web page or employ a bot instead of just letting people bid.

No longer becomes truly limited edition
Considering the system will probably sell 10m or more units lifetime, 200-300k would have still been quite limited. It's too bad, because the OG colors always look the best in every design they do. They should have just stuck with those and changed the shape and design every time.

You can buy the colors from amazon from generic manufacturers

Its the numbered consoles that collectors wanted

Should have made it:
  • Have active PSN account
  • Played for at least 30 hours
  • Have platinumed Demon's Souls (either PS3 or PS5)
  • Played and completed the first 3 songs from PS2 Classic Parappa the Rapper 2
  • Have at least 5 hours of playtime registered for both M.A.G. and Warhawk on PS3
  • Been subjected to PS3 era PSN hack and claimed free games offered as apology
  • Have a trophy earned for any PS4 game on the release date of the PS4 in their region
  • No more than 5 minutes of Concord played, otherwise disqualified
  • Have a scanned receipt of original PS1 and Battle Arena Toshinden launch day purchase
  • Have purchased any article of closing from PS Direct, with picture showing that clothing was worn in public, despite loss of social status
That aught to make things at least a bit harder for scalpers.

So I know the point of collectors editions, but what if, like, all ps5 pros were done in this style? Wouldn't that have made it far easier to get one and also justify the stupidly high price?

Anyway, I'm off to go be poor again and play on my £500 scrap parts PC 🥹

I mean, manufacture a reasonable amount to begin with, problem solved.
It defeats the point of being limited, doesn't it?

But why isn't Sony doing this everywhere? And I would make that PSN account activity go as far back as 2018 that way it covers users that at the very least span two PS console generations..

Takes someone to empower scalpers, think about it usually you don’t buy a console 100, 200 more than it’s worth, chip shortage during the pandemic was a good excuse now what’s the reason?

They should have produced the entire first batch of Pros as Anniversary Editions. Best way to counter Scalpers is by offering more supply. 30hrs of playtime my ass.

Just keep making them for the entire first year of the Pros and give everyone a chance to get one

Some friction, even if it's just a little, goes a long way. Even if it means 10% more genuine players get their hands on a console, it's worth it. You can easily check for behavior that looks like a ghost account vs behavior that looks like an actual person.

The more legitimate the association Sony can create between playing Sony games = you get first dibs on new shit, the more people will want to play their games, which is a good thing for them.

Let’s watch as Sony attempts to control both the price and supply of thing. Maybe it’ll work this time!

Pretty sure this wouldn't work in some countries or someone will sue for something like it should just be purchasable without other restrictions. It's a good, reasonable idea though. 30 hours in 10 years is small barrier.
