Space Quest 5 with full voice acting using AI

Someone (nickname cdb-boop on GitHub) added voice acting to Space Quest 5 using Text-To-Speech with voice cloning.
the voices are based on real actors which a few have passed away (eg: Gary Owens as the narrator) and may raise ethical questions.
The result doesn't sound bad and is quite impressive considering the author put less than 150 hours of work into this**.

I agree with you fully. As long as they can make the AI voices seem (at least mostly) natural, I'm on board.
Yeah, it definitely needs a couple more iterations/upgrades but we are getting there. Exciting stuff really.

Imagine all the time developers are going to save once it's fully optimized 🫡

Using the voice of existing people (living or dead) is a shitty thing to do. But for small indie studios that cannot afford to pay VAs? This is 100% fine.
 
Come to think of it using ai voice would be really useful as a placeholder for va during development. could even help out with va direction for inflection cues if the ai voices are good enough. Wonder how useful it can be for localization work.
