Speculation about Project Century so far is all wrong, RGG Studio head says

During a December 26 broadcast on the official RGG Studio YouTube channel, studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama made new comments about the recently announced Project Century (as reported by GamesTalk).

At The Game Awards 2024, we got a small glimpse of The Like a Dragon creators’ new game – including its moody retro setting in 1915 Japan and gritty action scenes. However, the title remains largely shrouded in mystery. This has not stopped fans from making various speculations about Project Century’s plot, especially theories that link it to the Like a Dragon series’ lore.

A particularly popular fan theory proposes that, based on the time period being depicted, Project Century may tell the origin story of the rival Tojo Clan of the Yakuza series. This would make the rugged-looking protagonist we saw a young Makoto Tojo – the founder and first boss of the Tojo Clan.

However, in the recent RGG Studio broadcast, Yokoyama outright debunked all of the fan speculation circulating online, commenting that the theories he’s seen are completely off the mark. Furthermore, he said that it was impossible to make correct predictions about the game’s content from the footage revealed at TSA 2024 alone. “We didn’t include any information that would enable people to guess.”

RGG Studio’s leader also specifically denied fan theories that suggest Project Century’s protagonist will be played by actor Kazuki Kitamura (who played Kiryu in the 2007 live-action film Yakuza: Like a Dragon) or Toma Ikuta. He emphasized that Project Century’s protagonist is a completely original character created specifically for the new game.

Yokoyama also confirmed that we will be getting an action-adventure game with Project Century, but unfortunately, that’s all the info we’re getting for now. According to the creator, it’s going to be a while before any follow-up news on the project is announced.

day fucking 1

The idea of playing as the leading founder of the Tojo clan would've actually been kinda dope and sounds like a logical premise. Shame Yokoyama dismisses that notion.

Regardless, the trailer has me excited. The setting/historical period (Taisho) is wildly underused by JP game development standards.

Even if the Tojo theory is not true I hope the studio is taking notes, would be a fun idea for one of their future projects.

Bruh can we move on from Yakuza? I was done with the series with 6 but they clearly had no clue where to take the series next so they made it a turn based rpg (a shitty clunky one too).
I really hope project century has nothing to do with yakuza

oh boy

Prepare yourself. This 100% will have to do with Yakuza and I wouldn't be shocked if they just tie it in with younger members for the Yakuza series that just end up being the heads of the Yakuza during 1 or 2 or something.

That's why I was left disappointed with Judgment...here we had this opportunity for a new type of story playing as a detective...but we were a detective....who still had ties with the Yakuza.

I just want Judgment combat system and a completely new setting.

The idea of Tojo's founder is really dope thought.

It’ll have the Korean mafia again as the masterminds.

The most important question the interviewer didn't ask. What platform will this game be available on?

Likely.

Based on their history, even if its coming to PS6, it will be on PS5.

When Sega bought Atlus, Persona 5 was on PS3 and PS4

Sega also put out Yakuza 0 and Yakuza 1 remake on PS3 and PS4, so chances are, even if it does release on next gen, it will be cross gen anyway.

My guess, PS4, PS5. XB. Switch 2, Steam

Nah

May Yakuza live forever and your suggestion go unheeded for the same period of time.

It needs to be a new IP. Something to Yakuza what Yakuza originally was to Shenmue. Build on the same concepts but a new direction.

lol at people in this thread saying 'alright, a new game from the studio that specializes in gritty gangster stories. But can we maybe not make it about gangsters this time?'

It's going to be about bad gangsters doing crimes and other better gangsters thinking those ones went too far and trying to stop them. Just like all the others.

I don't mind yakuza setting again, just not turn based please.
make it dark and gritty with loads of Violence, drinking, prostitutes, gambling and smoking.

I wanna see all the warnings on the back cover too if it comes out physical.then I'll know this is going to be the shit.

This is one of the games I'm looking forward to the most I thought it looked great. Things were a little to dark in some scenes and the combat looked a little to janky in some areas but I think the final product will be great.

Graveyard of Honor was a great film, but it’s damn brutal.

I also recommend “Battles Without Honor or Humanity” series. There are no Yakuza with a heart of gold in them though.

Anyways, can’t wait to see more of this game as the setting is super interesting.

same as you I'm looking forward to seeing what's next with this game.
I liked the trailer a lot,it sparked a slight feeling of what I felt like when I first played the yakuza 3 demo on jp ps store back in the day. I was amazed at the time😃
