Squadron 51, shoot'em up that looks like a sci-fi movie from the 50's, just got a demo

So, guys, I'm following this game for a few years now and after finally playing, I can confirm how amazing it is. The sound design and the visual effects are perfect. The game is challenging enough and the set pieces are original and creative.

Go play for yourself and check it out.

For those who don't know, it's a game that is set up like a alien invasion movie from the 50's. It's like Cuphead in that regard, trying to replicate the looks of the time. Check it out:

Lovely demo. I've never been a big far of horizontal/vertical shooters, especially bullet hell ones so this is a nice trade off, it not being too hectic. Doubtless it'll probably get a lot harder as it progresses but I'm happy with what I've played so far.

And the graphics really are utterly charming.

That looks really cool. I wonder if the black and white aesthetic would make gameplay more difficult than it should be though. It's gonna be difficult avoiding bullets when everything is in shades of grey.

Just got a notification that its been released. No reviews and heard next to nothing about it beforehand, usually a bad sign?

This game is in a weird place. First, was just 5 levels, then they got involved with a Chinese publisher and released the demo. Then, they have seemed to release a f2p version, and now are releasing the full products and also changed the name to avoid copyright conflicts.

But the game is still good everybody. Go play it.

Is it a bullet hell shooter? The demo if I recall wasn't, that'll make or break it for me. Can't stand them.

Its not bad. Played it a bit tonight, my main gripe is like a lot of todays games that value (graphical) style over substance is that it can be hard to keep track of what's going on on-screen. The fact this is played in black & white adds an extra dimension to the awkwardness. I couldn't begin to imagine playing this on the small Switch screen.

But its still enjoyable enough, its a very simple game, a horizontal shooter at the end of the day but for me, someone who never was a fan of the genre that's a pretty big compliment. And it does look lovely, really captures the 1950's B-movie vibe.

Oh yeah, its not a bullet hell shooter I'm happy to say :messenger_grinning:

Hmm, seems pretty cool looking at it in motion rather than on screenshots. Would be a nice addition to my Switch library.

That said, I'm not a great fan of the pivoting aim in a side-scrolling shoot-em-up, it seems to work better usually if the plane is just shooting straight away and every bullet-hell challenge is based on it being horizontal. Also the graphics do seem busy, and without color to separate the elements I could see it being a problem.

But I like the team's initiative and hope it's worth checking out.

Pretty spot on takes there mate. Totally agree with the pivot aiming, seems just harder to judge that way. Same with the contrast of graphics in B&W, lovely aesthetic but gameplay has to come first. I think that's part of what makes Cuphead so good, clean and clear everything, super crisp in terms of visual noise vs gameplay.

I've got a buddy that loves anything from this sort of aviation period, see how he goes with these issues. I'm going to gift it to him.
