The SNES and Super Mario World will always have a special place in my heart. The SNES was the first video game console I never played, and Super Mario World was both the first game I ever played, and the first game I ever got 100% completion on. While the OG game is still extremely fun to play even today, I did a search while I was bored to see if there was any hope for a remaster for this iconic game. That is when I came across this gem:

For those who don't want to watch the video, a fan of Super Mario World spent an insane amount of time painstakingly converting a few levels of the OG Super Mario World to a beautiful 3D format. Because the original game was a 2D sidescroller, there was a lot of work put into converting the original levels into a 3D model, as well as ensuring that enemies couldn't simply be bypassed by walking around them.

I felt like this was an extremely well done concept for what a modern-day 3D remake could look like while remaining faithful to the design and gameplay of the original. If you don't want to watch the making-of video, here is a shorter gameplay video showing off the first two levels:

If Nintendo were to release a Super Mario World - 3D Remake that looked like this, would you buy it?

Looks pretty good for a fan made UE5 project. These usually look terrible.

The outside environment needs to be a bit more saturated and less naturalistic. Also get rid of the environmental fog. Make the colors more like Mario 3D World and less like Zelda BOTW.

He should make new characters and tweak the animations and turn it into another game and become a billionaire.
This looks great!

I know I'm gonna sound like a Debbie downer with this type of comment, but these projects don't do a damn thing for me. This is one of the most basic ass "remake" a fan could do. Even I could just turn 2D sprites into 3D dot game heroes pixel clusters, and I know I'm not talented. The real talent for remaking something is to take the 2D Mario world with it's iconic visuals, and make something that looks unique but still true to the source material. This is just copy and pasting the 2D game in a 3D environment, which actually doesn't look very fun.

Also, I am so fucking tired of sponsorships in youtube videos for fuck sake. Youtube should have a setting for uploaders to have a different version of a video for Premium subscribers, because I pay for Youtube Premium to get rid of ads, and these fuckers shoehorn their sponsors in the video and think they're being cute about the way they do it.

Premium (or adblock) is for the ads. For the sponsors in the videos get SponsorBlock.

Is this one of those "I did X in Y time" influencers where they pretend they don't have an entire team working for them or is this genuine.

I don't know. If they're an influencer you would've heard them before this post. You don't need a whole team to remake Mario World

he's doing a bit more than simply remaking the game. Also follower numbers doesn't mean you are or aren't an influencer, is the chef at a small family restaurant any less of a chef at a 5-star restaurant.

If it was looking Jank, then i'd agree but it's fairly polished, plus all the bespoke art and animations for each entity.

I just don't trust influencers as far as i can throw them.

I never understood talented people doing this. Why wouldn’t you just create your own game?

Easy enough to have good looking & running games with modern dev tools. He's using UE, engine might suck for us but it's easier on developers
It's not like he's doing the whole game, just a couple levels, this type of work for a year isnt farfeched for one guy

Just think you should be a bit less cynical.

If it were that easy champ we'd see a lot more of this.

rather a cynic then being gullible

Nintendo DMCA'd the main guy responsible for AM2R,a guy so talented he got picked up by High Moon Studios, responsible for the Ori games.

Nintendo becomes a full fledged retard when it comes to people using their properties.

I mean, I understand why they are the way they are. Original new IPs from them are few and far in-between so they protect their money cows at all costs.
What I don't get is why they don't just hire these people and produce the games they make.

SMW is one of my favorite games of all time, it's literally the game that pulled me back in as an adult after losing all interest in video games after hitting puberty in the early 80s. Yet, I don't know if I'd buy this. The concept is neat... doesn't look like something I'd enjoy actually playing. Maybe.

Well that was the point of my post actually. The fact that they act like a bunch of bitter children instead of being profesionals and use those community creations to build on new games or hire those creators as part of the studio but nope Nintendo gonna herp derp.

It's also funny how AM2R came at a time when Metroid was going through the biggest slump of the franchise with the only release at the time being Federation fucking force of all things. Instead of using AM2R to build on something for a starving community they decided to tell the community to fuck off instead.

Like...take care of your fucking IPs if you don't want people to develop upon them due to the love they have for the IPs that YOU yourself neglect.

You make it sound like Nintendo doesn't own their own IPs and aren't entitled to doing whatever they want with them, including neglecting them?

The children here are people who believe these games belong to the public collectively or something and that anyone has the right to develop upon them.

They have the right to neglect them, and I have the right to tell them to fuck off as a fan of said IPs 😂

It's foolish to think fans have no say in the IPs a company owns when the growth and revenue of said IPs is directly tied to the fans consumption of them. But let me put it in simpler terms:

No Fans=No Growth=No Money

And Nintendo likes money, just like any big moneyhungry corporation out there so they'll have to please the fans whether they like it or not.
