Switch 2 will be 'affordable' but is it really?

I agree, but Sony also has a vastly different strategy and initially sell their hardware at a loss.

Nintendo is going to be profiting on each unit sold of this thing from day 1.

Right, but families and causal make up a large portion of their audience. Price it too high and they'll struggle to sell it to the masses.

A good way to strike that balance while also being profitable is to launch with a cheaper LCD screen rather than an OLED. I'm sure Nintendo considered launching with an OLED, but the cost per console would have been too high.

If Nintendo make Sin & Punishment 3, I'll pay $1000.

Funny you say that.

In 2022, Treasure announced it was working on a "highly requested" game. No idea what this could be, but a Sin and Punishment 3 is certainly a possibility.

However, they also had a skeleton crew at the time, so unless they've been on a hiring spree it's doubtful we'll see whatever it is for some time, if at all.

But there is a very tiny chance.

S&P2 will be hard to top thanks to its tailor-made Wiimote controls, but from my experience with Pokemon Let's Go Eevee I would assume that the Joycons have similar capabilities.

So let's hope they are working on it, Star Successor is such a top-class game. I'll gladly buy a Switch 2 just for this one game (provided it's a full-price, high-effort project).

switch 2 will be expensive

this is nintendo after all
How much do you reckon?

Historically the hardware was not that expensive, Wii $249, WiiU $299/$349, Switch $299 and Switch OLED $349.

Imo its going to be 349 to 399. Don't know about inflation though.

Was the OG switch affordable to the op with a couple extra joycons, pro controller, 2 new games?

Same thing?

I can easily afford the switch 2 with games and extra and I'm not talking about myself specifically.
I was just suggesting is it affordable as they say when you add on extras that most people need to use it with family or siblings ect. Also nintendo games rarely go down so your talking 50-60 pound games for 7 or 8 years with no discount

Ok I think I get it now. Let me see if I can formalise it:

Is the NS2 affordable?
1. No, I don't have money and I cant afford it.
2. No. I have money but I want to spend them something else.
3. Yes. I have money and I am happy to spend them on Nintendo stuff.

If you wanted to play a local multiplayer game on a "typical" console with 3 siblings, you would have to buy 3 additional controllers. If you want to play Mario Kart locally on the Switch 2 with the same 3 siblings, you will only have to buy one additional pair of joy-cons. Even if the joy-cons cost $10 - $20 more than the average controller, this is still a cheaper option.

The games are likely to be priced comparably to other systems, though you're right that they will go on sale less frequently. That said, Sony has also moved away from sales this gen and is trying to emulate Nintendo's strategy of preserving long-term software value.

Granted, if you have a family and a tight budget, your best option will always be to give your kids a Series S and a GamePass subscription to share and buy a few cheap third party controllers, but, that aside, the Switch 2 will probably be a pretty standard value proposition as far as gaming consoles are concerned, if not slightly more affordable.

Nice explanation, one of the best responses so far so thanks for that blacktout. 👍

Guess we'll see when we get there.

A little more practical: just put aside 100 bucks per month starting now and you're gonna be fine when it comes out. Put the excess back for something else in case it's gonna be cheaper.
