Switch games loading slowly on microSD

This is the card I'm rocking: SanDisk 512GB Ultra microSDXC UHS-I

Are SanDisk Ultras not fast enough for gaming or is my card just faulty? I'm looking at replacements now and I'm wondering if a SanDisk Extreme is worth the premium price.

I had that problem.

Upgrded to a 512GB card and games would take forever to load. Swapped back to the old 128GB and they loaded fine. So, tried a different 512GB and games load fine on that too.

I put it down to the first 512GB being a dud. Try a different card if you can.

Also have had that problem with a 512gb card funnily enough a sandisk one too, it was fine at first but as the card filled up by the time i had about a gig left all the games on it started to have that slow loading problem either the data is starting to get fragmented as things are moved about or that once there's a small bit of memory left on the card it struggles to load the stuff off efficiently.

In the end i just grabbed a 1tb card it was painfully expensive but so far it's working amazing, has fast speeds so everything loads properly. Was this one i grabbed

Assuming it's not a fake card it might just be a bad batch. Kingston is known for that. Never had trouble with Sandisk but personally it's worth the upgrade. I read some people used Kingston Canvas Select Plus which are fast and cheap but sometimes they just don't work at all. There are Lexxar, Lenovo, lots of products that seem to work fast. I'm using a SANDISK EXTREME A2 1TB SDXC U3 (sorry for the caps, c/p).

Not gonna make a difference.

Actually it does. While Switch is only rated to read up to 100Mb/s, a U1/C10 card minimum read speed is just 10Mb/s whereas a U3 card goes up to 30Mb/s. It's true that the Switch will never reach U1 nor U3 maximum speed but the minimum speed makes the difference when loading stages and textures. There are games that are horrible loading stuff, though, with a U3 card Bright Memory Infinite takes 30 seconds to reset the stage after you die (bosses are painfully because you play like 10 or 15 seconds until they kill you and then wait 30 seconds to load the stage again) whereas The Bridge Curse 2 takes almost a full minute.

Thanks for the responses everyone. My card was having this issue for about a year now and I assumed games were performing poorly due to the Switch hardware. Took me a while to realize it was the microSD. Ordered a replacement 512gb.

the easiest way to test if your game is loading slow is to move it to the switch internal storage obvs if you have space to shuffle them around.
Yep. I was playing Death Mark and pulling up the monster journal would freeze my game for 10-20 seconds. Moved the game to internal storage and the journal pulled up instantly.

I had that exact same 512 GB SanDisk in my Switch and noticed the same issue.

After more tests, I noticed that the data that was not moving (stays the same for weeks months) was read really really slowly (tested on my PC with tools such as HD Tune), like 2 MB/s.
And newer written data was read at 70+ MB/s

I ended up writing a small batch file to copy the SD card files to my PC, then overwrite it again to the SD card. It took more than 8 hours because of that slow read, but then it was way faster..

.. for a few weeks.

So I ended up buying a Samsung one and no issue since July.

EDIT : it was this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B7NVXLLM
The new one : https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B0CBMFJF7V

I’m taking my daughters shopping this afternoon. I’ll see if I can find a Samsung Pro for a good price.

Get one with both the U3 and A2 logos on it.

They deliberately make this confusing, but A2 means 4x better performance under continuous read/write scenarios such as streaming game data from storage and auto saving progress.
Interesting to know what they actually mean as i have no fucking clue what all those cryptic markings meant hehe. I just read the reviews on amazon and went for one that had a decent amount of good reviews. They really should make it easier to figure out the good cards. So far as a brand lexar have impressed me i usually went with sandisk because nintendo have obviously worked with them to allow them to release branded cards so i assumed they were the better ones to choose but i got hit with the same problem as op. Hell some games like inscryption were literally taking 5 mins to load thanks to my old card.

This, those symbols are important. If you get the right MicroSD card your games will load slightly faster than the built in storage.

Yeah sounds like a good plan. Mine has a 512 I think SanDisk and it runs normal (well as fast as an og switch operates anyway lol)

It's not worth the hassle to juggle every game but if you're playing a long game like BotW or if there's a title you play super regularly it helps to move it to system memory which is always faster.

I think I will get into the habit of doing this. Treat the SD card as a staging area.

I’m actually glad I caught your thread, man. It was insightful. I hope we have better options for memory, for when Switch 2 comes along. Gonna cop a new as card for the Switch Uno.

The games I had issues with work flawlessly on my Samsung PRO. Emphasis mine. I'll probably buy 1TB version for Switch 2.

The SanDisk card I bought was likely faulty from the start, it just took me an eternity to realize. Sounds like others in this thread had issues with that card.

At least now I know what to look out for if I ever have this issue again.

I had the same issue but different sd type. Dealt with it for a while before giving up and just getting a new card. Games load swiftly now.
