The best selling consoles of all time in the US, UK, and Japan as of 2022 (LTD sales numbers)

So like other sales threads I posted, I figure it would be a good idea to have LTD's put in a single thread that's not hard to search and doesn't require people to go on a scavenger hunt through 5 or 6 different sites to get this information which most people won't do. This thread will go over the Lifetime (LTD) sales units for consoles and handhelds that can be found in the US(not NA), UK, and Japan. For pre-NPD consoles with limited or no tracking we will be using coverage research/books or sales from the companies themselves if reliable. No add-ons or combo family sales, just individual units including their revisions. PS5/XBS excluded (outside of japan). If numbers are missing for UK post them and I will add them.

Is this right? if you add these numbers, the PS2 lands on about 80 million, we know it sold 150 million, so that is a difference of 70 million. I know this is only a few specific markets, but do all those other markets really count for 70 million?

Where's the Wii U in US charts? There's no way it sold less than the Pippin.

Can't find the numbers.

You are forgetting that the UK is only one country in Europe, the rest can make up a large amount of that, add in ROTW and the fact it was on sale for such a long time it all adds up.

The 360 sold about the same as PS3 (we don't have final numbers ww for it) and that with PS3 were both about 60 million plus behind the PS2's final LTD, so the areas the PS3 was weak in the 360 was strong in and vice versa, the PS2 did better than both with no weaknesses and some extra.

Sega Saturn: 1.5 Million

PS1: 30 Million

Playstation fucking curb stomped the Saturn. I owned both systems at the time but it always was disheartening to see Sega fail so miserably with their consoles. I was such a big fan of Saturn and Dreamcast but it was obvious they were struggling against PS, whose library of games was better and vastly more varied in genres, especially from third parties. I thought DC was a turnaround and I wanted them to succeed badly but in the end they were doomed. Sega's exit out of the hardware business still hurts to this day.

US Home console sales by Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo.

Sony
  1. PS2: 48 Million
  2. PS4: 35 Million
  3. PS1: 30 Million
  4. PS3: 27 Million
Nintendo
  1. Wii: 42 Million
  2. NES: ~29 -30 Million
  3. SNES: 20 Million
  4. N64: 18 Million
  5. GameCube: 11.8 Million
  6. Wii U: ? (less than GameCube by good amount)

I mean the whole PlayStation Portable family (PSP, PS Vita and PSP GO).

The Vita came around at a time when Sony as a whole was in serious financial trouble. The PS4 had to be their focus to help get things on track and they didn't have the means to fully support the ecosystems of two gaming devices at the same time, so the Vita eventually fizzled. In retrospect and seeing how well Sony and SIE have done over the past several years, it was the right move.

Regardless, the PSP was and still is the best handheld ever released imo.

Amazing at how low sales were for the 8 and 16 bit days (NES/Genesis/SNES) although they brought gaming back and there's so much talk and nostalgia about them.

For US sales, NES at 30M and Genesis/SNES around 20M each isnt impressive at all compared to modern standards. But thats the sign of the times when gaming wasnt as accepted compared to now.

Saturn what a bomb. And Atari 7800 selling around the same amount? Not a lot of sales, but that would be around the same time NES was out and Genesis was out soon. Never knew one kid back then even talking about 7800 never mind owning one........ at least they didnt want to admit it. lol. At the time, me and my siblings were buying gaming mags. I dont even remember mags talking about 7800 at all. I dont think I even knew it existed until the internet age.

Vita fizzles because of bad decisions and highly priced games, SD cards, and accessories, along with a lackluster library compared to the PSP's first tow years. Sony being in trouble was only part of the problem.

although they brought gaming back

What?

70m is the rest of the world.

PS2 was essentially a dvd system for alot of people.

It was a DVD player in it's best countries too for some of the sales, Sony also sent out more PS2's to lower income countries once the 360/wii were first out when the console could be brought for $50 or $60 making it a cheap option and one of the reason the PS2 was on sell for so long. If the NDS had the same geographical reach as the P2 it would have sold much more, but most of its sales were in higher income countries.

Why is NSW counted as a handheld? It’s a home console you can take with you on the go. Marketed as a portable home console. And Nintendo has always said it’s a home console first and foremost. Buuut we’re counting it in the handhelds and not the home console list? Weird.

PS2s were always cheap. Amazing Sony sold them at such a low price even at launch. By the end, that super small PS2 which looked like it wasnt much bigger than a gamepad sold for $70 or $80 in Canada. I remember seeing ads for it. Crazy.

Looks like Switch is counted among home consoles in the US and UK markets in the OP but not Japan, where is it only counted as a handheld.

I heard those mini PS2's had bad reliability, never tried them myself though.

Kinda surprised how close the Xbox one and PS4 were in NA. Like actually surprised.

Yeah, I remember the NPD numbers (when we got them) in the US every month were always in PS4's favor, but not by as much as you would think.

We don't know this and we likely never will unless Phil comes out with ltds.
Yes, we know it. PS3 sold over 87M and 360 sold 84M until slightly more than a year before being discontinued. On their last year consoles barely sell, and if 360 would have outsold PS3 make sure Phil would have mentioned it loudly many times.

In fact, now I remember that MS told once or twice to regulators during the ABK investigations that Sony outsold them in every generation.

The 360 sold 84 Million in summer 2014, and in the US alone sold around 1 million consoles that holiday without including the sales from summer to the end of the year anywhere else. it also did well in the US in 2015, and that's not accounting for anywhere else either.

Until Phil comes out with numbers we don't know without the ltd being released.

Sony outsold them in every generation.

That's not what the said in context.

Microsoft fumbling the Xbox 360 mindshare has to be the biggest L in gaming history. Also I see why Sony didn’t want to raise the price of the PS5 in the US. The market is too neck and neck to risk it.

I thought it was vice versa. The original PS2 I had all sorts of problems. The PS2 slim on the other hand was actually pretty durable little device.

I don't know, could just be my experience. The original PS2 is the only console I've ever had that didn't make it 5 years before it was broken.

PS2 It's the magic of video games... Damn, it took me a long time to have the PS2, But now I still love their games...

It was the golden age of video games along with Xbox and Gamecube... as well as the Survival Horror.

Despite RROD, 360 was a great console imo. They should of done a much better job on building that momentum with its successor.

For me it was the worst console I've ever had, and it was where I lost confidence in the brand and in Microsoft.

Since then I have not bought the Xbox brand again.

Well actually the worst is by far the Nintendo Wii for me... the Third is N64

Regardless, the PSP was and still is the best handheld ever released imo.
Agreed...but For me is PS VITA
The fact that Gravity Rush was born there makes me very fond of PS VITA.

I said the mini PS2 not the Slim. Sometimes called the PS2 Super Slim.

Damn DS and PS2 were insane. 360 too! Microsoft really shot both of their own legs off with the xbox one didn't they? All that marketshare they gained for nothing.

A 5 million gap between the Xbox One and PS4 isn't that much. Yeah, it's a loss from where the 360 was compared to the PS3, but it's really not that much of a beating and is somewhat close to the PS4. People made it seem the Xbox One did a lot worse than it did in the US.

It's big when you consider that they were well ahead of playstation at the time. A behemoth brand. A brand people though would dominate that generation. To go ahead of them, only to throw it all away, is the biggest botch this industry has ever seen. Look at how sony have murdered them since. The effects are still seen even today. You think Microsoft will ever have a chance like that again?

With games getting more and more expensive and taking longer and longer to make, supporting two separate platforms is no longer sustainable. Both Nintendo and Sony realised this, though they had slightly different solutions to the problem.

Throw it all away isn't a small 5 million gap, and already they are less than a few hundred K apart right now mostly because MS game delays, they would be ahead right now if not for that in the US.

Only a 5 million gap says more about Sony than it does about Xbox, and shows that late turn around the Xbox One made worked. Don't forget that Xbox One was discontinued shortly around the time of the XBS release, the One X even earlier, unlike the PS4 Pro, and despite an extra over 2 years Sony still only managed a 5 million gap, in 2019 it was 3 or a bit less.

You see the same in the UK, less than 2 million gap under the same circumstances regarding the discontinuation of the X and then the regular Xbox One before Sony did the same with PS4 and Pro.

You're missing PS5 from the UK list; they just reached 2 million LTD a few weeks ago. That'd put them in the 11th spot according to your list.

Check the last part of the OP's opening paragraph.

360 was insane!

Can microsoft ever return to some similar level of greatness.

People on here act like MS have never had any success in console gaming and the 360 beat almost every other console in history. It was a beast.
