The dire wolf has been (partially) resurrected from extinction after 10,000 years

Aloy?

As I'm on work I can't watch the video but... how does this work? Some species has to breed this animal. Don't its genes get altered with this process by default?

how do you think we got all these different kinds of dog breeds? humans have been cross breeding dogs for centuries, if not longer.

This is the same thing but with artificial insemination and some funky science with old DNA.

We don't have usable dinosaur DNA other than what exists in surviving descendants, since too much time has passed since they went extinct. We do have DNA for dire wolves, wooly mammoths, Neanderthals, Denisovans, the dodo, etc.

Resurrecting extinct human species was not on my bingo card. :messenger_open_mouth: I don't think it's morally justifiable to do this. What kind of a life would a genetically recreated Neanderthal children have? They'd be oddities for their entire lives. It's one thing to do this to animals, but Neanderthals are humans.

I didn't read the article, but didn't Dolly and her other clones (or clones animals similar to her) show rapid aging, like the nature figured out humans were trying to trick her and acted accordingly?

Dolly was a true clone. 100% identical to the previous sheep, no issues whatsoever.

Cloning technology was also very new at the time. They tried to clone the Pyreian Ibex which was also 100% identical to the extinct speciesb ut it only survived for a couple minutes.

Nowdays people clone either pet dog or cats that passed away, no issues.

Very cool, but from what I understand it is at best a genetically modified gray wolf because the actual dire wolf ancient dna is too damaged to copy or clone? Like evilore said, they compared the dire wolf and gray wolf genomes and determined that 20 changes in 14 genes gives you dire wolf chacteristics like a larger skull and white fur.

might seem trivial, but to biologists this distinction is important because we cannot be allowed to think we can let animals go extinct simply because we can bring them back.

Michael Crichton was way ahead of his time. If science can bring back (sort of) Dire Wolves, then you can bet in some underground lab or extreme remote island, dinosaurs are roaming around.

Id be more interested in stellars sea cow. when i was a kid i used to feel that dodo sadness for it. we do have quite a bit of sequences for it. It was relatively non invasive, lived in one small area and was good for the vegetation in the waters it swam. Also was cool as fuck.

for those asking about dinosaurs...dna has a decay half life of about 500 years......so basically its a no go. however there has been attempt to back engineer dinosaurs from chicken dna....but its not any particular dinosaur.

Well you can see why they went extinct. They’re super white (beautiful) and don’t camouflage well. Pray sees them coming a mile away as the snow went away.

We shouldn't be allowed to think that this is ethical in the least. A living being isn't a toy. I'm so fedup with scientists playing God, kind of ironic considering how atheist they claim to be.

Bringing back animals from an old era in a completely different environment isn't only cruel but dangerous.

As DNA technology gets better and better, what they'll be able to do really excites me. It's already changed the landscape of crime solving, I can't wait to see what it can do to recover DNA from ancient species and this field as well.

I’ve always been curious about the dodo bird. Then when we get bored of that, they can make a dodo with the brain of a crow.
