The Origami Killer (Heavy Rain) | Analysis/Critique Video

In this video, we take a deep dive into this heavily flawed villain and all the routes the story can take him. I feel like the initial premise for the character is solid, but so many elements of the execution bring it down. This ties into the game's development, where they shifted direction in the story close to the game's completion. It causes one of the clearest plot holes you can point to in gaming. Are you still a fan of the game in spite of its flaws? Do you think Detroit: Become Human succeeds in ways that Heavy Rain failed? Are you excited for their Star Wars game or anything they do in the future? I've head people say they think the devs behind Until Dawn pulled off this type of game way better. I really wish we ended up getting more of the DLC chapters, which could have fleshed out the killer's origin more.

What time is it?
Of any David Cage game, I think Heavy Rain had the most potential but that potential was squandered by the writing and totally let down by the twist taking it to the realm of stupid which is where most of his work falls. Of this style of game, I still think his output peaked with the intro to Indigo Prophecy, but the wheels fell of that game like no other.

Didn't entirely watch the video but interesting choice for a deep dive because the issue that we control the Killer is still a major strange choice from Mr. Cage.

And of course I am looking to future Cage games. Mostly to the memes his games will enable.

Playing this game was such a miserable experience and the "plot twist" of the unreliable narrator was such a catastrophically dumb angle that I swore to the almighty that I would never trust David Cage with anything ever again.

Fucking hack.

It is awesome when I am in the mood for a gritty thriller. It does have a few embarrassing plot holes if you dissect it. The motel chase scene is my favorite part of the experience.

I love this game because of its slow pace, the believable world and the amazing atmosphere. That alone makes it worth it. There are some big plot holes for sure, but they only became clear at the very end and until then I had a great time. And isn't that the point?

I think the games succeed at their tone and atmosphere, which is really appealing to me. I’m not sure why they always get hokey when it comes to revealing the main mystery.

The reveal of the killer was surprising. Not because it was masterfully done, but because it main no goddamn sense and relied on the game lying to the player.
And it did such a shit job at it too. Can't say I enjoyed playing the game, but I was on board with it right up until the reveal that came out of nowhere. That was very disappointing.

The problem with Heavy Rain is it should have stuck to being the interactive Giallo movie it always should have been.
I still enjoyed it at the time though.

Detroit definitely is the strongest QD game by far.
I love Giallo.

Man, now I'm thinking of something like Deep Red as a game, Goblin doing the OST. That would be so cool.

I liked Heavy Rain, but I thought that the story was pretty cheesy by the time I got to the end and was able to reflect on what I experienced. The concept was fun, but a little tedious. I think Detroit: Become Human refined what Heavy Rain tried to do.

You should, but only if you don't know who the killer is ;) Play the remaster.
I remember the killer, unfortunately. I always wanted to do a second playthrough and use the glasses less. I remember liking that FBI character but I caused him to get a bad ending.

I've been thinking about playing it with the Move controller on PS3. I also have access to the remaster via PS+.

It was one of Cages better works. Heavy Rain's story isn't that great but is not as dumb and all over the place as in Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit, and it's not even close. That one was a total mess after the first half of the game.

At least he learned from The Nomad Soul to focus on one thing, cinematic storytelling, instead of trying to blend a beat em up and shooter and investigation game into one with each of these pillars being not even mediocre.

Cinematic presentation in Heav Rain was excellent and still holds up well today.

First off "ORIGAMI KILLER" is gay as fuck. What you gonna do mate, give us a paper cut? Jog on you fucken mug, I've heard of Loony Tunes villains with more menacing names than you.
I'd knock that cunt on his ass and shit in his mouth while he's unconscious. The only 'killer' who'd have to call the police for almost being killed himself. Fucken twat

Indigo Prophecy was so goated.

Honestly, a modern day remake of that that keeps it generally the same but improves visuals/gameplay is all I want from Cage.

The game looks and runs a lot better. It's 30fps on console unfortunately.
The performance is better but I don’t like the texture and model changes they made to the game in the remaster. The whole game looks way cleaner now. If you look at Norman’s model, it’s the most obvious change, and he just looks weird to me.

This game really deserves a "next gen" remaster. And while they're at it, they could fix some of the plot holes.

It would be perfect for the Supermassive style and formula. Mystery to unpack, lots of red-herrings and fake-outs, great for set-piece kills and audiovisual moments... Its got the same exploitation elements as a slasher, but with the detective process generally being handled by amateurs who are somehow caught up in events its not a cop-show either.

The whole Ethan thread of waking up in random spots holding origami still bothers me. That's about all I remember. I was waiting for the explanation of that, and as far as I remember, they never explain it.

Detroit runs circles around it. Far better game. Heavy Rain also cheats, like in the antique store. A lot of thoughts in the game don't make sense either.

At least it gave us Ethan Mars theme. Which is one of the best themes and I believe I also heard it at the Olympics or something similar.

Its because the game was likely to have a supernatural element, they kind of dropped it and left some things in. Notice how the blackouts suddenly stop about halfway through the game. I bet there was originally supposed to be another killer. The game proper just doesn't make much sense.

I mention this all in my video. There wasn’t going to be a different killer, it was supposed to be the same except they were spiritually linked due to the killer being there when Jason died in the opening. The blackouts stop because they only happened when he committed his crimes, so there wouldn’t be any new ones with him actively having Shaun in the well.

I remember liking it back then, the whole interactive movie aspect felt novel and I liked the idea that there was no game over state and character could actually die.
The execution was really poor though. The writing is just terrible with massive plot holes, and the big reveal at the end doesn't really make sense with the mechanics of hearing the character thoughts.
