I think the PS2 era games are best left for emulation unless they have an atemporal aesthetic like ZoE2.

Fantastic movie and I remember reading reviews for this back in the day but never playing it. Might be time for a rewatch and first play, trailer looks great, hopefully gamepad controls will work well on PC.

I'm not crazy about the game selection. I feel there's many other stuff they could have done instead, but at least I'm not going to say "nobody asked for this" despite how popular the phrase is on GAF lately.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
This was always one of my favorite movie licensed games along with Butcher Bay.

How good the level/encounter design was always made it feel like a Half-Life 1 spinoff.

On repeat plays you can see how scripted the squad members turning is, but the first time through it's a pretty fun experience not knowing who is human and whose a 'thing'.

What time is it?
It will not happen but I'd like to see Extermination as well.

I prefer these types of releases as The Thing is largely inaccessible these days.

Doesn't seem like retro gaming's your thing, yet here you are. Go ahead and enjoy the gushing fountain of AAAAAAAA games this generation has provided. Me, I'll get physical on Switch and hopefully the modded Steam Deck OLED version will let me run around Antarctica as naked Lara.

Would love to see them do a remaster of Project Eden which more modern controls, visual additions, gameplay enhancements and proper multiplayer support.

It was released on GOG but the multiplayer is difficult to get to work since it relies on Gamespy which was shut down years ago so you have to use unreliable workarounds.

Looks like fun. I think I briefly played the original but not a lot of memories. Adore the film obviously. £10 max I’m paying though on sale 😂

I hate post PS3 gaming but I gotta give respect where is due: clearly the way to enjoy old games is with moded nudes.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I read it's their most ambitious remaster bringing the game from ps2 to ps3 era but to me it looks like I remember it. I'm sure it's got upgrades, likely a lot of the textures and stuff (the monsters have shiny pixel shaders now, that's an improvement I suppose) but it doesn't look transformative overall or anything, it already had some really nice visuals and effects with fog, lights, shadows, low visibility outdoors... I suppose it needs more updates in terms of gameplay (it's clunkier and more shallow than folks give it credit for) so maybe they've done that but after Shadowman I have my doubts...

Loved it on PS2 and I'm glad that they're doing this. I wasn't expecting it at all. More love needs to be put into this IP, would love to see more done with it, especially in games.

MacReady: Hey, Sweden!
Doctor Cooper: They're not Swedish, Mac. They're Norwegian

Day 1. Hopefully a full release this Halloween. 🎃

Wish they'd make a new "The THING" game with Unreal Engine 5.

Here's a realtime Unreal Engine 4 demo:

There was a small fan made game "demo" here:

Original was pretty amazing up to a certain point. Eventually the story went off the rails. The early parts that were strictly horror were great. Exploring levels that felt so dangerous, deciding whether to give guns to your squad or take them away. Knowing one could turn into a monster at any moment.

I distinctly remember taking the gun away from one guy so he couldn’t shoot himself until he calmed down. Next thing I know he grabs an exposed electrical cable and electrocutes himself! Crazy game.

While I do think it’s a lazy remaster, for me It’s day one regardless. I remember this game very fondly, actually it was the first game that I’ve bought for my own first PC that I’ve assembled.

Nostalgia is helluva drug.

What makes it lazy? I'm just curious as Nightdive is one of the best studios to do remasters. I feel like their quality and enhancements are pretty on par with each title they do, but I guess it's much more noticeable in the most classic titles. Don't get me wrong, I would've loved a full on remake, but hey, this is something! I still think it looks pretty solid personally, especially for something that I never thought would receive this treatment.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
hope they fix the bugged blood test or something.

I remember the test is not accurate in the original game.

Ban or delete me if you must but I feel like whenever Nightdive is brought up, people should be reminded that the studio head (Stephen Kick) called for the death of his political opponents. https://archive.ph/Gj2Fw

His tweet was in reply to the CEO of Sticker Mule releasing a milquetoast statement on shunning political violence, after an assassination attempt on a presidential candidate.

I'm sticking to the xbox release.

Seriously, thanks for the info man! I'll definitely factor that into any future purchases. Oddly enough your Xbox copy looks eerily like mine lol, mine has the sticker residue on it still.

I snagged it Summer or 2023, I don't think it was $40 but maybe it was? Either way, big fan of the OG movie and had never played the XBOX version, just the original PC version over a decade ago. Couldn't pass up the chance at getting a copy in the wild.

It's too much PS2, it deserved a little more ambition in this remaster. It was already average graphically in 2002, now in 2024 it will be hard to play this on a PS5pro :messenger_tears_of_joy:. I hope it won't cost more than 20€.

I wish it was a full blown remake but understand they don't have anywhere near the budget. I'll still get this even if they didn't improve upon the infection system just to support The Thing. At least there's going to be mods. Hope it does well and maybe one day The Thing sequel or a full blown Remake could be made!

I understand people who say it's dated but to me it looks fantastic and scary as heck. It unlocked memories of playing it on my first modern pc back in 2002 and it blew my mind back in the day. Good job!

Yeah that might be tricky to do as some of the transformations were scripted and the npc's were flagged to be "clean" to not break the game.
