Think I either have a problem with my PS5 charging dock or my Dual Sense battery is toast

Lately, my Dual Sense battery on my PS5 controller runs out so quickly. Used to be like 6 hours, now it's like 2.

Also I noticed that when I'm charging my controller as I play, I'll check the status and it will have like one solid bar with the other two flashing(so not fully charged) but if my gaming session ends before it's fully charged and I put it on my dock, it doesn't charge. Like it thinks it's fully charged or something.

Does this sound more like a problem with my charging dock or is my Dual Sense battery at the end? And has anyone else had batteries die after a lot of use where they only hold a charge for a couple hours even with gameplay that doesn't have a lot of haptic feedback or rumbling to drain the battery quicker?

Best way to test is to use something else to charge your controller. USB C phone charger will work. If it charges fully then you'll know it is the charger. Otherwise, probably time for a new controller.

It "fully charges" when I connect it to my PS5, and it fully charges on the dock, but a weird thing happens where if it partially charges on my PS5, then once I connect it to the dock it thinks it's fully charged. Last night I had it connected to my PS5 while gaming and when I shut down for the night, it only had one solid bar, but when I put it on my dock it wouldn't charge. It charges on the dock just fine when I don't partially charge it before putting it on the dock though.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Try with any bog standard USB C cable to charge it.

It seems to charge when I use USB C, it just dies in my next session much faster. I'm playing a simple Metroidvania right now(very limited battery usage compared to other games) and I got a low battery warning in 90 minutes of play.

Agree with ReBurn ReBurn . Time for a new controller, more than likely.

Clean up the dock and controller contacts, see if it helps.

Could test with a second controller?
I always have two controllers as the charging dock fits two and I often local co-op on games with the fam.

My very first Dual Sense battery got to where I'd only get 20-30 min of playtime before the battery died.

Always wondered if it was the charging dock ruining the battery...now I have two relatively new controllers and same dock and so far so good.

As a guy that's frequently disassembled Dualsense controllers to clean the sensors to (temporarily) fix stick drift, I can say it's not a big deal to replace the battery, if that's the issue.

Batteries are like 11 bucks on Amazon, can probably find them cheaper elsewhere too.

Here's a step-by-step guide for taking the controller apart.

But as others said, I would start by trying to charge it via other USB-C sources and see if it will hold a charge that way.

I'll sell you my Astrobot or 30th controller. I need money for the new Switch...

But yeah, that battery sounds toasted

ps5 and ps4 controllers have been weird for me in regards to charging from a third party device, in my case an anker 4 port usb charger. They will only start charging if the controller is off. If I’m using it, they won’t charge. Once the controller is off and the controller has started charging, i can turn it back on again and use it while it’s charging.

Had the same problem. It’s just the battery in your controller dying. Mine got so bad they would go through a full charge in like 15 minutes.

Buy some batteries off amazon and replace em. Pretty easy to do.

I would only charge my controller if it needs to be charged.

I remember my cousin left his 3DS plugged in while it was in sleep mode for six months and it destroyed the battery.
Keeping batteries at 100% for extended periods destroys batteries. I've had it happen to several of my devices.

Had the same issue with my launch Controller. At the end it was empty after 1h or so. I bought a new battery with more capacity, opened up the Controller and changed it. It isn't that hard and definitiv cheaper.

Have you tried resetting it?
