It's that time of the year again, GAF... pilot season! Where your new favorite shows are made, picked up, and then canceled after three episodes. I'll try to post more details this year, including those involved, and I will post and try to update cable development as well (though that will be significantly tougher).

Have any shows been picked up so far that might be script to series?

Yes!

S.H.I.E.L.D is the only one i will watch from the start as of right now because with The Avengers being a massive hit, Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 coming this year i have a feeling that show is pretty fucking safe for a renewal.

I refuse to get into a great drama only to be kicked in the balls half way through with a cancellation.. Never again will i let that happen.

Aww yeah, here we go!

Will I ever see a pilot that's not picked up?

Very rarely, though some pilots have been picked up to series on other networks they weren't originally commissioned for. Breakout Kings was a pilot for Fox before being picked up by A&E, and Ringer was originally a pilot for CBS (and a script for ABC) before being picked up by the CW.
Mockingbird Lane?

It's like the Inception of spinoffs.

Almost no NBC dramas ever interest me, or just lose steam super quick. Only exceptions off the top of my head: Journeyman ( :( ) and Parenthood.

SHIELD on ABC? Sounds iffy especially if ABC wants them to squeeze in more stuff for their female audience. Like what they did with Last Resort. Love quadrangles ahoy.

Marvel is owned by Disney now. ABC was the only network it was going to end up on.

Amazing job Ivy, really appreciate the work you've put into the OP.

So far I'm in for SHIELD (Whedon + Marvel = duh for me), Super Fun Night (Rebel Wilson is usually pretty funny) and Under the Dome (really liked the book).

:lol at an NCIS:LA spinoff

Another NCIS? Come on now.

NCIS is good turn brain off, cop show drama. With occasionally interesting arcks. I can't wait for this new one. Plus unlike CSI or Law and Order, NCIS doesn't just copy the show and put it in a different location. LA is more about terrorism and doesn't give two shits if its a Navy personal they just wanna stop Terriosts. Which makes it different and enjoyable on different levels then the normal NCIS.

Also sign me up for CrossBones (OMFG HOUSE), that "House but a Layer show" and that one about the dome town.

This tickles me to no end. I am in absolute awe of this Inception-like spinoff scheme.
I believe back in the 70s/early 80s, All in the Family had spinoffs so successful there were second-gen spinoffs. Via Wikipedia: Maude, Good Times (from Maude), The Jeffersons, Checking In (from The Jeffersons), Gloria, Archie Bunker's Place, 704 Hauser.

The NCIS:LA spinoff would be one level deeper, though.

4 generations with the shows being completely different will he quite a feat

One new pilot coming soon is The Americans on FX. It's about soviet spies living in America during the 80's and airs at the end on January.

I find it really hard to get worked up over network shows these days. A few of the pilots/shows in the OP do sound cool though, like Under the Dome and S.H.I.E.L.D., and some others have really good pedigrees behind them, such as Dracula (from the creator of Carnivale?!) and Crossbones (from the creator of Luther?!).

Yay, a pirate series! Hope it doesn't suck.

There's also a pirate series in development at Starz (Black Sails) which should premiere next year.

WE PEACOCK COMEDY:

NBC has ordered a semi-autobiographical pilot presentation starring Jessica Simpson. Ben Silverman will produce. It's a multi camera starring Jessica Simpson from a writer of 'Til Death and Paul Blart: Mall Cop, meaning it's destined to be a GAF favorite.

Updating OP.

Two part question, something I'm not sure about. When a pilot has good response and they order episodes does the pilot air usually again when the series starts proper so that viewers remember or catch up? If no, does it air when another network picks it up?

In this case I'm assuming the Pilot is not remade, like it sometimes happens with either new castings or other changes.

this could be a wonderful post-modern trainwreck

Sometimes the first aired episode is not the pilot. In this case, the pilot would typically be put as an extra on DVDs.

Sometimes the pilot is re-shot (this often happens when one of the main cast members has to be re-cast--often times someone is cast in a series in "second place", which means that they're in two different shows, and one of them takes priority over the other. this happens when someone is on a show that's likely to be cancelled, and thus lines up backup work, or when they're a rising star and they sign two projects).

Sometimes it airs as-is.

I'm hearing that the NCIS spin-off is called NCIS: RED. Personally, I'm excited for NCIS: Yellow Version where you can watch the characters from all the shows without having to pick one.

A good response to a pilot that ends up in getting it ordered to series is entirely internal. Pilots are being filmed around this time; studios make their final decisions by May for what they'll pick up for fall. Shows that are picked up then start staffing and casting in the summer, I think, in order to start shooting in time.

A pilot that airs is almost always because the show was picked up (some exceptions noted upthread) and almost always airs as the first ep because it is designed to introduce the show to viewers.

Deadline has amended its article -- "Jessica" (as I'll call it) is a single-camera. Which means it's the perfect sitcom to go Thursdays at 8.

“Jessica Simpson is truly a modern-day Lucy with incredible comedic chops,” said Silverman.

Steven Bocho (Hill Street Blues)'s pilot Murder in the First picked up to pilot at TNT. Logline:

Co-created by Bochco and Eric Lodal, Murder In The First is a murder mystery set in contemporary San Francisco. It centers on two SFPD homicide inspectors as they investigate these murders, a Silicon Valley wunderkind who is a celebrated CEO of a cutting edge tech firm and prime suspect, and the defense attorney and prosecutors engaged in the high profile murder case. As the series unfolds, the investigations and the subsequent prosecutions will provide viewers with a window into the soul of modern justice in an increasingly complex world.

I'll update the OP when I get home.
