I've been wondering - how come VNs are so PC-centric but so hard to find on home consoles? My impression has been that the Japanese market (at least up till the end of the PS2) has been mostly console-focused, and is now handheld focused, but while it seems like they get some of the bigger VNs (Clannad, Fate/Stay Night) on Vita, a lot of stuff remains PC-only.

Secondly, when it comes to English / Western localizations (Grisaia Trilogy for example, or Sharin no Kuni), how come it often winds up being Vita only instead of PS4 only (considering the smaller install base of the Vita) or PS4/Vita like many other titles? The latter might be due to cost, but wouldn't you hopefully recoup that thanks to the larger install base?

I guess, in a tl;dr sense, how come it's not so commonplace to find a home console VN, be it in English or otherwise?

(Very) Short answer: chances are it won't recoup cost of cert/minimum manufacture volume in the lower attach rate and lower interest environment.

Last few hours for the Full Service Kickstarter. They've made over 4 times their initial goal and all stretch goals.

Note: NSFW Content

There's a new demo on the game's official site too which is linked on the KS page. (Again, NSFW.)

Hmmm. Thanks for the explanation - I really appreciate it! Would you be able/willing to provide the long answer? I guess it's thanks to the strength of the fanbase and thus the high attach rate for the Vita that publishers are willing to take the chance?

As a big fan of trophies and the comfort of the couch, I can't help but wish that more of the Science Adventure titles were available on console in English (preferably on the PS3 like in Japan) along with Clannad, and the "when they cry" novels. At least there are localizations for most of them on Steam now though and it seems like more and more of them are coming as time goes by..

Wow, how did I miss this? Anyway, it's pretty exciting that a bl game got so much funding.
Finished with almost 5x the funding asked for. Mazjojo has a pretty dedicated fanbase already, but I'm not sure they were expecting this large of a response, judging by the stretch goals. It's really exciting to see such support.

Hopefully they take some of that extra funding and really heap on the polish. The artwork is already A+, but the script in the demo showed a couple small issues. Nothing major at all, but I think they should spring for a professional editor for the finished product.

Slightly disappointing news from Sharin no Kuni Kickstarter:

Originally, we announced that the resolution of the game would be 1280x720 for PC and 1024x768 for the PS Vita. Unfortunately, this was slightly out-of-date information. The correct resolutions are 800x600 (4:3) for PC and 960x544 (16:9 equivalent) for Vita. Sorry for the mix up!

I am curious on why did they end up with 800x600. Am I wrong to assume still pictures is easier to target for higher resolution?

The original Japanese version had assets in this resolution. So, no effort, no upscale, no redraw port, it seems.

That's what the original assets are and that dictates what they can use. These are 2D assets than can't just be re-rendered at a higher resolution.

Uh, no one should want them to upscale it. And calling it no effort because they didn't hire an artist to redraw every piece of art is a bit extreme, especially given that few backers would even want this.

How about the Vita? Is it actually 800x600 but upscaled but no one can notice because of the small display?

Take PC's 800x600 assets, upscale to 960x720, trim that to 960x544 -> Vita assets.

That's not rerendering. And waifu2x upscaling is not without flaws or something I'd want a company to use on art assets in an official release.

Options are good.
Also, waifu2x is miles above bilinear filtering or whatever crap algorithm you will get when you upscale 800x600 to your monitor's native res.
(Unless you play on a CRT. Do you play on a CRT?)

What's the consensus on Root Double -Before Crime * After Days? According to the Visual Novel Database it is quite long, is it worth my time?

Pretty sure most of them are drawn at a higher res and if the 360 release is still using 800x600 assets I'm guessing the artist/company didn't save the original assets/PSD/SAI files which would be pretty disappointing.

I would also like to know this.

Also is Root Letter similar to this? Any other good Vita VNs? I just restarted S;G again to refresh myself before diving in to S;G 0.
Thanks in advance!

It's... Decent, a 7.5/8 for me. Fun romp, worth it. However, it's nowhere near being a classic like Ever17 or Remember11.

Hmmm... I'm still tossing up whether I'll read it.

I have read Ever17 and thought it was quite good. So I might check out Remember11. Do I have to read Never7 beforehand?

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Random thought: I would like to see a kickstarter for an english version of the Eve: Burst Error remake. Errr... the most recent one, that is. There's been like 5.

No, N7 only pertains to a minor plot point in E17 and only shares a couple things with R11. You can read them in any order.

Should I watch the anime adaptation or play the first Utawarerumono in preparation for the upcoming Utawarerumono sequels?

The anime is good on its own, coming from someone that hasn't played the game. There's also OVAs for it that add on to what I believe are extra scenes in the game.

Speaking as someone who's only played the game and not watched the anime: It's not a particularly good game so you might as well just go with the anime. The story's pretty OK up until around 2/3rds of the way through where it gets real dumb.

I guess I'll go with the anime, as I'm already playing other games at the time and I wouldn't be able to add another one to the mix right now.

a really good VN, it's not one about mind-bending plot twists, but more about the journey and characters which i found really enjoyable.
It has a nice mix of faster and slower paced routes, i really liked Route B which has a mix of mystery and slice of life moments, but not everyone was a fan of it.

it's one of the few VN's i have thoroughly enjoyed with this kind of lenght that aren't episodic.
So i would say it's worth your time if your looking for a sci-fi VN with focus on the characters and their background story.

How violent is Root Double? I wanna play something that's objectionable.

There's a bit of violence, but nothing really objectionable IMO. There's some fighting and injuries as expected of the setting as well as some (off-screen) murder, but I don't remember much gore or anything super shocking.

Unfortunately the developers aren't comfortable with using upscaling for Sharin, and even if they were it'd add a lot of unanticipated time and costs (man hours). It was either the original 800x600, or the cropped console assets, and an overwhelming majority spoke out against a cropped PC version, so this is the way we took it.

bit late but I also liked it

it had some pacing problems in the second route but that's not surprising for something of that length

I don't think i'd quite rank it among the best VNs i've played but I certainly don't regret the time I spent on it

I feel it's quite late to update us about that now, the details about of the graphic were part of the first KS back in mid 2016. And the game has an estimated delivery date of Aug 2017 (although with the rate of updates I think it will be pushed back further), 1024x768 would have been appreciable. Having the option to choose would be better, that something Dies Irae KS did quite well.

What happened to Dies irae? It's two weeks from release and what do we know about solid release plans? What about the Vita port?

I can't wait until the day before "launch" when they send out a new update saying "sorry but this is gonna be delayed. There's no way anybody could have foreseen this."

I'm honestly not that bothered by Dies Irae's release date kinda being up in the air. It looks rad, and I'm willing to wait for that... as long as they do a good job.

Though I'm waiting for the physical copy to go out before I play it, so who knows how long that's actually gonna be.
