Visual Novels Community Thread | A Little Something for Everyone

Just a heads up, I found the game to be very disappointing (and I think a lot of people did). Very flat and boring characters that either have no development at all or have very stupid development. The story is very predictable with twists that you can see coming from miles away with very unsatisfying endings. The art isn't very good either. I wouldn't suggest playing it tbh.

There was one particular twist that I actually liked a lot in Killer Queen ( the game is disappointing overall):
The fact that nobody messed with the collars because they were like the collars in Battle Royale, which exploded if you messed with them. I liked how the game made the reader think that while in KQ the collars are perfectly able to be messed with. That does not redeem the game though, especially those sex scenes in Episode 2 *shudder*

Grasshopper-chan so moe.

Personally, MUV-LUV is not really worth. Both all 3 novels are deeply flawed for different reasons and overall you can use your time reading better stuff.

I couldn't disagree more! Harem nonsense aside I actually found the scope of the thing once we hit Alternative to be just ... awe-inspiring. The thing just hit so many beats for me on the SciFi front that I couldn't put the thing down once I got to Alternative. Like the themes its presenting and exploring are just way above and beyond what I was expecting from something that started out like it did. And the way it handled
the inherent other-worldliness of an alien civilization along with a time travel/alternate dimension subplot
was just like ... wow. All of my yes. Ending aside, the main problem was having to wade through all the Anime/VNisms to get there.

The first of my many surprises to come over the next few days is ready, so I present to you the new alternative* to VNTLS. I'll be updating it more or less weekly and while it's not very readable right now, parts of it will have a more readable version (albeit with slightly less data) shortly.

If this is at all editable (which it shouldn't be) please tell me ASAP so I can panic. Thanks.

Are there any other survival game visual novels outside of danganronpa and the zero escape games?

Great list! It is not editable, do not worry.

I do not know if this counts, but Lemnisca Translations is planning to translate Root Double -Before Crime * After Days- but it is currently on hiatus since they're waiting to see if the enhanced PS3 port will get a PC version.

EDIT:

Killer Queen counts to a degree, but since it also goes on to ripping off Battle Royale and also includes (admittedly it can be turned off) underage porn, I wouldn't recommend it much.

Besides, Ever17 and Remember11 are good picks, while they aren't shaped around a "game", they're still the good old "Why the hell are we stuck here, how and because of whom?" VN. They're both by Kotaru Uchikoshi, Zero Escape's main writer.

I don't know if this isn't possible due to legal reasons or whatever, but it would be helpful if the titles had embedded vndb links.

I realize that that's just a suggestion to make more work for you, although I'd be willing to help out with that.

I can do it it will just take me a little while, was enough of a headache figuring out why HLOOKUP wasn't working (spoiler: you have to declare the data as part of the table before you can point to it).

Theoretically I can just edit it on my PC and it should auto push every update, so we'll find out how that goes. For the time being it's based off the weekly data from JP, I may change that some.

I finished Eden*. I enjoyed the first part of it, but once
they escaped the facility
, the game just dragged on. The story's conflicts had largely been resolved, and I kept waiting for the VN to just end
and for Sion to die,
but it kept going on. It was the VN equivalent of the ROTK movie ending. Sion just isn't all that interesting, and once the focus shifted to her, I liked Eden* a lot less. I wish it had been a few hours shorter, but the first arc and the impressive production values made it worth the $10 I spent.

God, that was such an amazing ride. The voice acting adds so much to overall game's enjoyment. Really...
I know #7 and #8 aren't well liked, but I will keep an open mind. If they are half as good as first half of Chiru, it will still be a worthy read.

Requiem is... different. I liked it, and the tea party was reaaaally good.
Twilight was good. Some parts may drag on a little but I found it to be a nice way of ending the novel.
I don't think you have to worry too much.

I remember the shitstorm when ep 6 came out, I think it was the Chinese translators who ragequitted over the Solution, eheh.

Was episode 6 where
Eva (I think) solves the epitaph? That was one of the best parts of the whole novel.

I personally prefer the original artstyle and character sprites of Umineko. Checked out a bit of the PS3 sprites and voice acting and I vastly prefer the original version.

InfiniteNine

Rolling Girl
I think the VA work is the best addition from the PS3 version. I don't mind the PS3 graphics too much since they're better than Alchemist's PS2 Higurashi sprites, but I still prefer the originals because the facial expressions are still better there.

That's Ep3

I'm pretty sure it was in Chiru... (Umineko full spoilers)
I mean the part where the solution is revealed to the player, the word "quadrillion" and that the secret is in the church/cathedral. I think it's the part where the "pieces" cooperate, solve the puzzle and then there is a shootout over the gold.

Finished A Kiss for the Petals 6 - jeez that was boring (ocassionally cute in places), but nothing really happens. If I wanted to watch porn I'll do that...

So 999 is my first visual novel and I just got my first ending (Safe). I'm definitely going to go back and get the true ending, but I wanted to ask a question.
So after I finish this I'm going to pick up the sequel, are there any real differences between the 3DS and Vita versions? Are any puzzles done differently because of the different screen numbers? Is one version considered better?
Thanks to anyone who can answer me!

same game, but the 3DS has a shitty error that can erase your save file, it happened to me when I was near the ending and has to watch the last 2 hours on youtube, let's just say that it wasn't very cool.

Get the Vita version so you can ignore that shit.

Also, get the Submarine ending in 999.

Why is the Submarine ending important?

Just started Fate/Hollow Ataraxia AKA the VN I've been dying to play for years. A lot more slice of life than I thought. But oh man Lancer's scenes own so much.

I actually managed to forget how much of a hypocritical twat Emiya is.

Love the backstory on rider though so I can't complain too much.

Ordered myself an HP Stream 7 from Amazon since it's $20 off at the moment. It's going to be so nice being able to play VNs over lunch at work, or at the doctor's office, or wherever. Maybe I can finally start digging through this backlog of games I've been swearing I'm going to play for years now.

Is that a good tablet for PC visual novels? Does it run Steam? I've just noticed that Amazon will ship that same tablet to my country.

Yeah, according to the videos in the OP of this thread, it can actually run Skyrim at about 15 fps, so it should have no issues with pretty much any visual novels. Plus it's the full version of Windows 8.1 so it can run any software your regular laptop/desktop can. According to one person in the thread, some games don't play nicely with touchscreens, but there are a couple apps in the OP that are supposed to help with that.

First off, you're reading my second favorite VN and video game, and about to move on to my favorite VN and game of all time. (Edit: Make sure to get all endings, most if not all of them are really worth it!)

3DS (might only be the retail version but do not quote me on that, I think the eshop version is patched) has a shitty glitch that can wipe your file. It also has only one save slot.

Vita version has no glitches and three save slots.

Remember that the US versions of the game(regardless of platform) include an English dub(can still choose JP) while the EU versions come with Japanese dub only.

The only thing the 3DS version has going for itself is that note-taking is much easier on the 3DS because of the stylus.

^ Vita version also simply looks better. Another difference is that you might prefer doing the puzzles and whatnot with a stylus instead of your finger/right stick. I personally had no problem doing them with my stick even after having played 999 first.

So, I started Muv-Luv and everything was fine until the Meiya ending. At the very end (right before the credits I think) the game constantly crashes. Since I can't properly finish the route, I can't unlock Unlimited.

I'm running Windows 8 and I've read, that this is a common problem on W8. The suggestions I found (compatibility, disable sound/music/voice, disable patch) didn't help. Did anyone have the same problem? Any way to fix it?

I did. You just need a save file which is at the very beginning of Unlimited- If you go Sumika route as well, I think the game crashes halfway into the route, so it might not be possible for you to legitimately unlock Unlimited.

I'm not the target audience for the game yet I kinda have some interest in trying it. I may consider a purchase, down the line.
Well, I'm making an OT for it and I'll link it here if you want to check it out and get some GAF impressions.

MangaGamer made a cool website for it too, but I can't link it because it's NSFW. But they've got the link up on twitter and stuff.

Ah, that's disappointing. I guess I have no other choice, though. Hoping there won't be similar problems in Unlimited and Alternative.

Has anybody had much experience or success with running VNs on one of the many cheap Win8.1 tablets that are now around? I've been considering a Linx 10 for PDFs and comics but it'd be ideal if it would double up as something to play VNs on while I'm tucked up in bed.

Here. The Vivo tab 8 has 2 Gb of ram, just like the model you just said.

On a happier note, along with Seinarukana and some other stuff, I wanted to be able to work on my backlog on the go, so I picked up a cheap Windows 8.1 32 bit tablet, and I'm here to tell you it's just about the greatest thing ever, and I highly recommend it. It's not perfect and I haven't really put the battery to the test yet, but it beats dealing with my 15" laptop. It probably can't handle any of Light's new stuff but it runs anything with a resolution of 720p or lower like a champ, and it looks great doing it. It's much less of a hassle than my vita for me, and a lot cheaper too since I don't have to buy games twice.

Which would be the best cost-benefit tablet for visual novels?

Depends what you're looking for.

Like that old quote and picture that Marche posted say, I really quite like my Vivo Note 8. It's really a great little device, and I'm glad I picked it up. I can answer questions about it, but it's hard to say unless I know what you're looking for.

Took me my whole life but I finally finished Fate Stay/Night, for some reason I couldn't stand playing it more than one hour a day and I forgot about it for WEEKS at times so this was a game that took me ages to finish.

I liked it, even if I have mixed feelings about it, as a crazy Saber fan it sucked to play anything that wasn't the Fate route or the Last Episode(which was great, I needed that closure).

now I should probably watch Zero, maybe check out Fate/hollow ataraxia, and even watch the Illya anime.

I really wanna re-read Tsukihime, as I still consider it one of my favorite VNs... but I'm still waiting for the remake lol.

Which would be the best cost-benefit tablet for visual novels?

I'm also interested in this, I want a nice tablet for VNs and anime.

Started playing Muv-Luv because panda goaded me into it~

I barely played for half an hour, but gosh there's so much marital violence.

Just got my HP Stream 7 today. Seems to run the few VNs I've put on it so far fine, except for Steins;Gate which doesn't play well with touchscreens. There's an app recommended in the OP of this thread that might help with that, though. Need to try it out. The thing isn't exactly a powerhouse, especially with only 1 gig of ram, but it seems to be doing everything I want it to do.

So, I finally finished the UBW path in F/SN and I think it's much better than the Fate path.
I will say that I preferred the good ending to the true ending though. I liked having Shirou living with Rin and Saber, so it was kind of sad that Saber doesn't come back in the true ending. I still liked the true ending, because Shirou and Rin still get to be together, but I found it little more bitter sweet than the good ending.
I'm starting Heaven's Feel next, and if what I've heard is correct, there will be a lot of tears on this path.

Edit: Also, I finally got my copies of Eien no Aselia and Steins;Gate that I bought during the RightStuf sale on Jast USA products. So that's pretty exciting too.
