I absolutely adored those old Genki racing games like Kaido battle and Shutoko battle.
Lucky me they recently released the Toyko Xtreme Racer 2025 and it's soooooo good!

Diddy and Crash are better than any Mario Kart I’ve ever played. Sonic Transformed was good fun, too.

Crash Team Racing for PS1. Once you'd tried it Mario Kart 64 felt like watching snails. The sense of speed was great and the battle mode felt crazier.

Honestly, only Mario Kart Double Dash, 8, and maybe DS deserve to be standing with the likes of Diddy Kong Racing, Crash Team Racing, and Sonic All-Stars Racing. Not that the other Mario Kart games aren’t generally great, but only a few are truly excellent IMHO and these other character racing games are truly exceptional themselves.

Nice selection! Totally agree... Extreme G2 has a bad frame rate. I had a better experience with the first one.

CTR is the best one but DKR probably has the best single player.

Absolutely love CTR. At the time I enjoyed it way more than Mario Kart 64.

After that I’d go Sonic and Sega All-Star Racing.

Here’s the thing. Mario Kart absolutely sucked ass on N64 and GBA and only came back to form on the DS. So there’s a pretty long period of time where I’d wager a good chunk of character racers on the market did something better than the MK games they competed against.

Crash Team Racing on the PS1 was leagues ahead of MK64 in track design and multiplayer. The only think MK64 did better was battle arenas. That one arena out of the four available could make you and a friend or three spend afternoons and nights playing it again and again. But actual racing? CTR was king.

But MK64 was so poor, I guess even stuff like Mickey’s Speedway USA did better.
I still haven’t played Diddy Kong Racing.

I also tried Sonic Transformed and it was quite good, but the controls weren’t as smooth and user-friendly as in modern MK.

I randomly discovered Wai Wai Racing (Konami Kraft Racers) back in the GBA days, and it’s insanely underrated. It was way better than the GBA Mario Kart.

I have very little experience with this genre. So I'll just rank all four of them that I can recall ever playing.

1. Ivan Ironman Stewart's Super Off Road Arcade (technically, the different trucks had different drivers)
2. Skate or Die (racing was only one of the events, but it did feature different characters)
3. Carmageddon
4. Quantum Redshift

Diddy Kong comes to mind, that game is awesome.

Lego also had a fun racer on the PSX. Making your own karts was fun, and it seemed to have some kind of physics engine going on.

What is wrong with you? Mario Kart is clearly the king of this hill so I said other than Mario Kart. No where in my post did I say these were the best I made this thread for people to post their favorites other than Mario Kart.
