What is the modern hype equivalent of 'queuing/camping outside a game store at midnight' for a game's release?

Not exactly equivalent since digital access means people don't need to get physical copies anymore. Still, what do people do these days that matches that level of hype?

Staying up at night for a release?
Paying an extra 30 - 50% for advanced access?
Taking time off work?

All of the above?

Live events within Live Service games like Fortnite.

I cannot tell you the hype my kids have whenever these are happening. I have to plan schedules around them.

I also remember the shutdown of FF14 1.0 was a huge event.

is waiting for Starfield 7
I get a haircut, take a shit, shower, cut my nails, make a nice grilled cheese and steak sandwich and a can of coca cola and stare at the countdown timer till the game unlocks on psn.

I'm a fighting game fanatic and only do this for my most hyped games - Sreet Fighter, Tekken and SoulCalibur.

Virtua Fighter 6 might make me do this again.

And SoulCalibur 7 needs to happen.

It's actually something that I am slightly nostalgic about - midnight launches. In that sense I think digital is a bit rubbish.

It's a shame that wanting to get to a new title used to mean physically showing up for it, now it just means paying for early access!

Idk, Lan parties, watching Youtube streamers, streaming if want to be watched, it's not just for the lucky people, anyone could stream, if you are not surrounded with people that share your hobby then streaming is the perfect choice you've got.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife

Everyone is so rightly cynical, and the industry output has been shockingly horrid, so it seems like it's been quite a while since we've had a release with that seemingly universal hype. Elden Ring is the best I can think of for recent releases. Maybe Wukong hit like that if you live in China. GTA VI is probably the upcoming game with the best chance.

Complaining on Neogaf that the launch servers are fucked, watching review scores getting bombed and then everyone forgets a few days later and it's never talked about again.
