What multiplayer game would you recommend?

Interested to hear what everyone is playing.

In my mind this market has stagnated with Fortnite, CoD, Rocket League, Apex, R6 and a few others absolutely dominating the headlines for years.

I really liked Sea of Thieves recently and am wondering if anyone has any none-shooter games they’re playing. Possibly cooperative but fun. I’d like to start MH Rise and am hoping the matchmaking is easy.

Dayz on a PVP server, technically it's a shooter, but it's also more than a shooter and requires more brain than reflexes so you can still be good even if you are older than 30.

Path of Exile 1-2 are also great games.

And yes never cared about MH but i got friends who love it, simple and addictive action RPG game it seems.

All these games are best played with friends tho (not PoE ones)

  • EverQuest 1 time locked progression servers
  • WoW Classic
  • Meridian 59 is still going
  • Quake III (fuck Quake Live)
  • Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 (via CNCnet)
  • Freelancer (via Discovery)
  • Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory (via ET Legacy)
  • Neverwinter Nights 1 (Community servers are still strong. Especially if you like ERP)
  • Heroes of Might & Magic III
  • Age of Empires II: DE (if you have friends or a good group. There are, like with many other RTS games, especially Blizzard ones, many tryhards that have optimized any fun out of the game)
  • WarCraft III (classic!) custom maps. (Castle Fight, Starship Troopers, DBZ Tribute Elite, LOTR Risk, among many other cool maps)

  • Treasure

Seconding Monster Hunter Wilds.

Also, I always love me a good fighting game. You don't have to depend on anyone.

So SF6 I guess but I know that's not everyone's cup of tea.

The lovechild of Valheim's gameplay loop with Castlevania's good looks with a sprinkle of boss rush with PvPvE or Co op with multiple friends.

Crush your enemies, become stronger from killing and absorbing bosses, build a mother fucking castle, invade other player's castle.

Co op based? Helldivers 2.

Competitive? Marvel Rivals.

Monster hunter? Wilds is next week.

Try all 3. Rivals is free.

For me the only really viable long term option is Final Fantasy 14, and even that is really lackluster in a lot of ways. I would commit a hate crime for a proper Mihoyo MMO (Blue Protocol was looking good......), but well.

I am looking forward to MH:Wilds, but I really prefer these "long running" kinda games, as opposed to MH for example, which is a lot more "match based".

Tried out Lost Ark yesterday, played that on release for like 5 hours and kinda liked that, but I was really put off by... everything, when I tried it again. UI already annoyed me.

Lost ark has massive bot problem last I checked.

Surprised Mihoyo hasn’t done an MMO yet. I could see that being next though.

I looked into the game a bit before considering it, apparently they did something about that just a couple of weeks/months ago. Can't tell how effective it was, but they do seem to adress this.

It'd be glorious, but they're managing quite a few active games as it is, and I don't know if there's that much of an incentive for them to chase MMOs. Tower of Fantasy looked kinda nice, since it tried to be that kinda MMO Gacha, but that seems to be pretty much completely dead sadly.

The only thing I'm playing is Space Marine 2, and barely the PvE mode. I'm tired of trying to compete against people, I did it for like 20ish years with Halo 1-4 and COD. Sometimes I'll play an RTS online, but I would rather just play stuff SP or vs AI.

The market hasn't stagnatged so to speak. I'd say it's matured.

Nowadays multiplayer is more like each game is its own platform with much longer lifespans. It's very hard for new games to come along and take the audience away. Personally my main game has been counterstrike since like 2012.

I will say I miss the days of 360, where we had good new active multiplayer shooters every year. It always felt fresh. But unfortunately modern gamers don't really even enjoy conventional pvp shooters these days so we just see a lot less games like that apart from the behemoths that have their own active playerbases. You'll see things like "Spectre Divide" pop up and die off almost immediately.

Really depends on what you're looking for. This is what I'm currently playing.

PvP:

Street Fighter VI: The best Street Fighter's even been imo. Starting you off with resources and speeding up the game have really worked to the experience's benefit.

PvE:

Risk of Rain 2: My favorite group game overall and favorite roguelite. Game can become insanely frenetic. There's a saying in the community that you haven't truly beat Risk of Rain until you've made the game crash from effect overload. Music's also a bop. Takes a little while to get into because of all the abilities/items you have to learn (on their own and for synergiess) and unlockables to earn. Don't be intimidated if you get crushed at the start. You have to learn to always keep moving.

Helldivers 2: Fun, campy action game. Pretty famous last year - you've probably heard of it. The game was subject to some whiplash in balance patches but it's in a good place right now.

Darktide: Co-op FPS with abilities. By the Vermintide guys, if you know them. Characters all have a bunch of fun abilities.

Rogue Trader: Traditional, isometric RPG. Leans into the camp of 40k completely. Good stuff. The least multiplayer of these options as it's just a turn-based RPG that grants players individual character control.

Space Marine 2. Great coop game. I did enough PvP to get the Platinum, but didn't really care for it much.
Helldivers 2. Good squad based game. A bit janky with lots of glitches. Looks like shit on PS5, even Pro. Much better on PC.

I've played a decent amount of marvel rivals but stopped about a month ago.

Bought the new Ark but I don't know how much I enjoy it. Reminded me of V Rising which is another I played in the last year.

That's really it for me

Fortnite is really good. To anyone who hasn't given it a chance, especially zero build - do it.

Helldivers 2 is also tons of fun. I mostly play online with randos and I haven't had a bad experience.

If you're looking for co-op:

It Takes Two was phenomenal. I'm super excited for Split Fiction.

State of Decay 2 for co-op, with nice single player too. Just invite 1-3 friends into your own SP campaign. One of the best Microsoft IPs for me personaly.

There are 4 sentences in the OP. Guy asked for "non shooter" recommendations in one of the four sentences.

Total thread suggestions are 84.98 percent shooters.

OP, don't listen to them. The FInals is my personal recommendation for you. Great if you have two other friends and very friendly to players who aren't into clicking on heads. It's the game of the generation imo.

Path of Exile 2 is amazing fun in multiplayer. I know you said non shooters but I'd definitely recommend Helldivers 2, it's hilarious and has that 'one more mission' addictiveness to it. Very rewarding games to play too.
