WHERE IS THE NEXT BURNOUT GAME?

Have you played Burnout games?
Criterion is closed right? Who owns license, any updates?

Also, OP...there are three indie games inspired by Burnout and I think they had some former Criterion devs attached to the projects.

Danger Zone
Danger Zone 2
Dangerous Driving

Maybe check those out to see if they scratch the itch. They're very basic and do not capture the magic of Burnout, but it's something to look into.

Just here to say I liked Burnout Paradise!

Literally tied with FF7 as my favorite video game of all time. When it clicks, it's one of the most cathartic games ever made. It translated burnout to open world flawlessly, and imo is still one of the best open worlds ever made.

I would say the only flaw is, while a cool concept, races should have been on closed off tracks. It's still fun, but less so for new players not yet experienced with the open world, and I think that ended up giving many players a bad first impression.

At least, make the open world racing a separate event type.

It's such a beautifully made game, I feel it's not regarded as highly as it should be.

For me, it's the closest to a "perfect game" I have ever experienced.

Tag, you're it.
I'm very nervous about this game since it has gone radio-silent after its initial announcement, but there was a cryptic tweet last week for the first time in 2 1/2 years, so hopefully they will have something the next time THQ Nordic does an event...
I'm not nervous at all. It's coming it's just that developing a game takes time that's it, the reveal wast most likely to attract new talent.
They never gave a release date for a reason, but I can't fuckin wait as if it's as good as Burnout we're in for a threat!

Er, not the case unfortunately.

That Wreckfest reveal was a re-reveal of what was originally Dangerous Driving 2, a game announced (and available in a playable demo) at PAX East 2020. They beefed up the concept with a world editor feature (and I assume dropped the planned Switch 1 version?) to make it it's own franchise, but it's the same project at heart: the Three Fields version of open-world Burnout Paradise after they already didnthw Three Fields version of track-based Burnout.

If I remember correctly, that Weeckfest announcement was also in the last THQNordic show before the Embracer collapse. Three Fields persevered (and they're independent, so they're only affected if the checks stop coming, ) but the financial situation has always been a cloud overhead.

There's been enough timeb and enough ups-and-downs following Wreckfest to have worries. I'm not saying I have no faith, I'm just rightfully nervous after years of silence about the project. But they are a tiny team, and this is a very big project. Hopefully we'll find out more about its status/progress soon.

If a new Burnout ever comes, pray it won't be open world. Because I think it would.
If gamers would actually all pray together I'm sure the Holy Trinity would summon new Burnout...very fast, it's the game that brings so much joy to gamers, even Jesus wouldn't mind playing it

It's EA, if it's not live service, they don't care.

EA did recently remaster Burnout Paradise out of nowhere. And they brought the Skate IP out of mothballs. Plus a Burnout game could be made with GaaS hooks (whether they would be good or bad is up to debate.) I think it's unlikely, but they do strange things to make a little extra change.

EA own the license, EA own Criterion. Criterion were moved to making Need for Speed games after Burnout Paradise and NFS has been their primary focus ever since. Currently they are helping with the next Battlefield game.

Not "helping", Criterion were moved onto that team-of-teams making Battlefield games. I don't think they're coming back.

That's the bad news.
...The good news, maybe, is that there is another hope.

Stellar Entertainment, the developers of Burnout Paradise Remastered (& NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered, they also did assists on other racing and high-spec projects) is making a new "AAA arcade racing game, built in Unreal 5". No clues yet what that is, but they have been on it since at least 2022 and they so far work most often with EA, so it could be a new Burnout, it could be a new arcade-style NFS, or it could be something else entirely but at least it will be arcadey in a genre desperate for a new entry...

Truism. The series is highly missed.

I still pop on Burnout Paradise Remastered just to blast Saosin's "Collapse" on repeat

Unfortunately it's a new IP.

Burnout is an EA product. If they can’t annualize the product or turn it into a GaaS, it’s of no interest to them (justifiably).

I do wish publishers would be more willing to license their franchises to willing developers (Sony and Nintendo are chief among them), the issue is those third party studios - if they’re of sound business mind - are better off developing their own IP, usually. Otherwise they may keep the lights on, but they’ll always be chasing the next assignment rather than betting on themselves.

I've made my peace it's not coming back. I'll just play Takedown on PCSX2 with all the bells and whistles. It's been so long since I've played it I have already forgotten everything about it.

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
EA bought out Criterion and destroyed them. They had them focus on those shitty NFS games.

Sad part is Burnout could easily be monetized. Tons of possible visual customization pieces to charge for. A new game could have NFS levels of customization WITHOUT the need to pay for part or car licenses.

EA not going this route really demonstrates how inept they are run. Burnout also has immense social media influence potential.

Its a damn shame that arcade racers are effectively no-go for most big publications at this stage.

I can't even blame EA, they made real run at it with the last NFS and it was a really good game but nobody seemed to care. GAAS seems to be the only way any of them would consider it and that automatically counts me out.

For now, and likely for the foreseeable future, I'll keep emulating Takedown and Revenge. They still hold up very, very well.

Ea killed Burnout for Need for Speed and now both are dead.

This one is a little bit like Burnout.
