Where to shop for used kit cars?

I've never considered it until recently, but it might make sense for me. Have to look into it more before seriously considering. Before anyone mentions the obvious- it's not for a daily lol.

I don't want to build a new one, though. I'm trying to avoid tearing apart a car and rebuilding it. An unassembled kit only avoids half of that lol... I'd rather get a used complete car or at least a roller. Maaaayyyybe I'd consider building after doing more research but atm it doesn't sound appealing. I'd just be trying to get it over with.

So I want to do some looking, but where do I look? Are there any sites that specialize in trading or consigning kit cars? My whole life it's something that just occasionally popped up among regular used ads. There are too many models and to few in numbers to search for anything specific so I need somewhere to browse.

So whatever sites, brokers, forums, whatever. All tips appreciated!

So after googling “what is a kit car” I can see the appeal. The closest thing I can compare it to would be a local salvage yard. I had a 2010 Pontiac G6 Sports Coupe and tried to keep it as long as I could. When parts would go bad, I had to go to salvage yards since my local GM dealer couldn’t get the parts anymore. Once the engine popped at 456,000 I had to let her go.
It may not be what you’re looking for, but good luck!

Thanks for that! I knew it'd be a long shot asking but I thought I'd be more fun to check if there's anyone here or I just go traveling searches. I checked the community threads but I didn't see any car one in the index.

Some kits are built off production cars but I want one with its own chassis. They all use readily available engines though. And the are meant to be completely built with hand tools so it seems it would be nice to work on. Most these things have the engines mounted in a tube frame and they are so accessible. Then you are picking super easy stuff like Mazda and Ford engines. Seems fun to maintain and not busting knuckles in tight spots all the time. Or looking for parts that get rare.

I’ve always wanted to be able to do stuff like that, but a mix of money and marriage made me move away from the Pontiac and onto something more sensible for a family. The G6 was having all sorts of issues with the higher mileage and parts were getting hard to find. I had the water pump blow into the oil pan…that wasn’t too bad, but the clutch and transmission were on their last legs as well. I had a local guy tell me that certain Chevy parts could work, but required special made mounts to get it in properly.

Back on topic: I’m now looking at what you have here, but I’m thinking it would be easy to let this project go way over budget pretty quickly. ☺️. Good luck finding a forum that will get you where you want to go.

Do you mean Toyotas transgendered into Temu Ferraris? That’s all the kits I see around my area.

Tommy Tallarico had a fake lambo and convinced the internet it was real for 20 years.

No reskins of production cars! That's a largely different thing. There's kits that are based on (often shitty) doner cars, then there are ones that include a whole original chassis in the kit.

Edit: now that I think about it, they are probably all listed in the same places anyhow.

No, he means something like this

Yes more like that! I think I would avoid replicas, though. Maybe. I was never very open minded to that so I could stand to think about it more.

Can’t you just google kit car sales?

I briefly did but it's fun to ask here and socialize a bit. I'm never in OT.

So full criteria - Original chassis, roof that doesn't leak, door locks, probably no replicas. I think that's it. Something like this is what I'm thinking about:
