Which games have the best surround sound (5.1 or 7.1)?

So I just picked up a new headset that supports Dolby Digital 7.1 and I want to test it out. I've always been a fan of good audio in games, but have never had the hardware capable of experiencing surround sound... until now.

I'm curious if GAF has played any games with great surround sound, and would like to share what they are and/or details.
 
I'm FAAAAR from knowledgeable on this topic but I'm just dropping by to say that when I played MGS4 at my friends place who actually pays some attention to his audio setups it blew my mind. Kinda made me want to move on from my stereo headphones :lol.

I wouldn't judge a 7.1 headphone setup.

At best it's a 2.0. You aren't going to get legit bass or surround effect.

It still is a damn good showcase of what my audio system can do. Game is so cheap now it's totally worth getting just to hear how awesome it sounds.
 
I don't know about the best, but I remember being pretty amazed after I got my PS3 and started playing Killzone 2's multiplayer.

I don't disagree but I'd argue they're resting on reputation right now. There are very few noticeable improvements in BF4 over BF3 or even BC2. Like, yeah this sounds great but I already done heard the shit out of it six years ago.
 
Mass Effect 3 had some neat sound effects and I was very immersed in it with my 5.1 system at the time of its release.
 
Call of Duty MW3's campaign. It may have been uninspired in many areas, but on PC the audio file quality and surround is amazing. While overall it wasn't the best use of Sledgehammer's talents, they sure brought dat Dead Space aural expertise to the franchise.
 
Headphones have nothing to do with surround sound. I'm not sure what you bought, but it soulnds like marketing jargon that you probably had ot pay extra for.

Surround sound is all about the source. Either console or sound card on your PC will have the digital signal processing to create the soundstage on a headset.

The best surround sound wil be found on engines that do direct hardware mapping to a virtual soundstage then output. I don't know that consoles do that, and it's no longer done on PC thanks to the definiciency of modern audio API's. You have to go back to older titles that used the older hardware accellerated audio API's.

I believe this is changing now though thanks to AMD's solutions on PC (And I think PS4 not sure).

For now, on PC at least, any decent motherboard or soudncard will have virtual stage processing that will process 5.1 or 7.1 output from a game. All you should need is a decent set of headphones. I love my sennheisers!

Driv3r for PS2 had remarkably good surround sound in its CGI / movie intros. It was really awesome. First time surround sound at home truly blew me away... was at an audiophile friend's house and he was like "listen to this." It was magnificent

Headphones aren't really 7.1.
 
Tom Clancy games use to be a leader in this space. Ubi doesn't seem to care much about old school Clancy games anymore though.

The dobly 7.1 is a funciton of the USB soundcard that came with the headset. The headset is still a stereo headset (As it should be! Never buy any of those 7 speakers in the cups monstrosities!).

This probably comes down to a plain old better stereo headset than your old one, and you might nto have been using the virtual soundscape/virtual surround built into your PC's onboard sound.

Or in toher word,s you would have been better served by picking up an even better set of stereo headphones for the same price.
