Which theme/setting in gaming should be next?

There's always a theme or setting. A few years ago, it was bows. From Tomb Raider to Crysis 3, every game felt like it was showing off bows. We had slow motion action games for a while after Max Payne. Metroidvania's popped up with "hand drawn" art. Superhero games pop up all over the place. Different settings like medieval have come in packs. I'm noticing an uptick in ninjas and samurai this year (I'm ok with this stuff).

(please lets not discuss specifically this game or else I'll preorder)

So what's something you'd like to see next? I promise I don't work in a gaming field and my boss needs ideas for things we should return to.

I'd like to see a return to military operation espionage games. We haven't really had a lot of good gadget/spy games like a Goldeneye/PD, Splinter Cell or to some degree, Alpha Protocol. I'd prefer them without zoomer colors too and just make it look like a real military/spy game.

Bring back big budget immersive slower paced horror non linear games like System Shock 2. System Shock 3 was going to be it but it was canned. I'll like to see a bunch of these limited resource slower pace horror games back like it's the old RE1 to RE3 days with games that were similar back to them back then like Martian Gothic, Deep Fear, Carrier, SH1, Extermination, Run Like Hell, System Shock 2 etc etc.

I want Pike and Shot. I want Gun Wizards. I want African-inspired Fantasy Land part of a bigger world like Warhammer. I want Copper Age Fantasy World. I want hard sci-fi human colonists with no aliens. I want more micro missile weapons. I want western fantasy artists who haven't even dared to look and be inspired by any screenshot from World of Warcraft. I want them to also find more artists like Gieger and Zdzisław Beksiński and get inspired and then run that style into the ground and repeat. I want alternate history. I want to fight the Soviets for Japan in the 1980s.

Oh yeah. One more thing. I want the concepts of sci-fi and fantasy power levels as far as the human mind can go. A galactic war between beings that fire machine guns full of Greek gods power levels.

Can't remember if I've ever seen maya/Aztec environments in a game ( not the long forgotten ruins stuff but more the peak times) and ones with antique settings like the Romans or Egyptians also seem very sparse these last few years.

If we did get more military/spy games, I very much want them in the realm of stealth games or at least tactical shooters ala Rainbow Six Vegas. I miss single-player campaigns where I'm against unfair odds if I just engage directly, and instead have to work around or tilt odds in my favor than just brute straightforward force or reaction speed. I'd also like to see modern hardware take more stabs at actually commanding AI squad members to take more advanced contextual actions depending on the situation. It just stopped in the PS4 generation.

I'd like to see more fantasy settings where magic and sci-fi techology are forced to coexist or work against each other, whether it's an urban flavor like Shadowrun, or closer to Steampunk with Arcanum of Steamworks & Magick Obscura. Ideally drawng from places or architecture that haven't been overused like North America or Europe.

So what's the next trend that tons of creatively bankrupt devs will shamelessly ape?

I dunno....I just want another MegaMan X. Fuck trends.

I want a train era like we had a bow and arrow era in the PS4 gen. I want an RPG where I slowly build up my locomotive and use it to traverse a large open world.
