Will the Gods Clash Next Year? MS vs SONY Simultaneous Launch

As rumors and insiders suggest that Microsoft will be releasing a console next Holiday season.

Do you guys think Microsoft and Sony will release at the same time and if so?

Will we see better, stronger releases as a result of console launches that are close together

IMO I see a lot better titles coming out if they are to be released at the same time versus a little less competition initially. I can pretty much say my wallet will be emptied as I will have to buy both of them.

There is no doubt these consoles have had a lot longer time to cook. I guess time will tell. What say you?

If Sony don't release when MS do, they're completely fucked again. So I expect them to release at the same time.

Console releases have to be close together...otherwise one console gets a 25 million console lead over the others and it becomes very difficult for the others to compete.

I can see Sony and MS both announcing their systems for Christmas, then playing chicken to see who delays theirs into the new year first.

Maybe MS, but not Sony IMO. There is little to be gained from launches too close together. Head starts don't really matter.

Rumors put Sony not being able to make Christmas 2013. So Microsoft will launch Christmas 2013 and Sony Spring 2014 (and if they are out of their minds Christmas 2014). The craziness of both of them launching at the same time would be o_O The Wii and PS3 launched together in 2006 but that wasn't nearly as much fun because of Sony's stupidity and it wasn't even a competition. Xbox and GC launched together but they were both demolished by the PS2.

I suspect Sony will launch around 6 months after the next Xbox. In all fairness, as long as the pricing structure is similar, I don't think Sony will be worried. People are overestimating how much the gap will affect them. Their brand is still strong enough to take the lead, if they don't decide to jump off a cliff like they did with the PS3 at the beginning of the generation. And that's likely what will happen unless Sony repeats the same mistakes again.

The XBox brand is as strong as ever right now. Sony losing 6 months would put them in a pretty big hole unless MS screws up. Think about it. All the next gen versions of 3rd party games people will experience first on the next Xbox. That was instrumental in MS taking control of America this generation.

I think MS will come last, accord to many rumours they have problem to manufacturing the crazy 16 cores processor.

I can see both launching next year. It makes no sense for Sony to launch in the spring of 2014, especially in the US when the holiday season is the biggest shopping time of the year.

All rumors point to Sony launching in 2014, not 2013, which would be a disastrous mess for them. So, no.

Rumors put Sony not being able to make Christmas 2013.

Do you two have any links to this rumor? The last rumor I read said something along the lines of them being 6 months behind, but still a month ahead of MS. At least that's how I read it.

Not really.

They made one huge mistake after another this generation, and they're still neck and neck with the 360, and likely will overtake them eventually. I doubt they're going to go all seppuku with the PS4. They've got a much better online infrastructure now, several studios ready to release a steady stream of games, and their brand, whilst not as powerful as it was in the PS1/PS2 days, clearly is strong considering how they managed to recover from the disastrous first years of the PS3.

Sony has everything to win as long as they don't price themselves out of competition. As long as they launch within 6 months or so of the next Xbox, they'll be perfectly fine. The more important thing though, is whether they will aim for launch before the 2013 holidays. That time makes the most sense for a console launch. Plus, it would probably be in both MS and Sony's best interest not to allow Wii U two holiday seasons to itself.

Unless Sony launches earlier or at the same time then they are making things very hard for themselves again.

If they are launching a year after MS and 2 years after Nintendo then they might as well not launch at all.

launch on the same day too!

I can see the lines at best buy.

A xbox and a playstation one.

The fights will be epic.

Sony probably isn't ready.

I hope they are tho. I want all 3 to not fuck up. That means better games for us.

But I expect someone to delay.... If not both

If Sony misses holiday 2013, MS will rush out Durango even if its not finished. The consequences of having a holiday under your belt should not be diminished. It gets the word out massively with families getting together and word of mouth spreading. Sony doing a smaller launch in the spring wouldn't have nearly as much fanfare

I say they both come next holiday. i believe someone from sony already mentioned that realeasing around the same time would be a plus for them.

If MS launches before the holidays next year and Sony doesn't, game over.

The best thing to do would be to release a console in October 2013 with severely constrained supply to get buzz going, and then start to meet the demand for the holidays.

Sony can't afford to let Microsoft get a head start. The Xbox brand has become too powerful this gen.

True, but lets not forget that PlayStation brand has become a lot weaker this gen as well.

I honestly think that MS probably realizes that Sony is going to try and rush to do a simultaneous release, so they will probably speed up their development to ship before Sony does. Or if they get rumor that Sony wont be ready in time they will just continue on as scheduled.

PlayStation still has some juice left and Microsoft would be stupid to reenact Sony's PlayStation-2 fueled arrogance.

Sony can't afford to let Microsoft get a head start.

The problem is, can Sony actually afford to start up production of a new console given their current financial situation. I think Sony needs to bring in some capital either from investors, really beef up their sales this holiday season (of both Vita and PS3's) or maybe merge with another company to work on the PS3 (Sony/Samsung merger anyone?).

I just don't see Sony bringing in the kind of money over the next year to fund the production of a new console (start up costs are enormous) barring some kind of a huge turnaround in sales for them over the next 2 quarters.
