Will the new LOZ be able to topple OOT as the best in the series?

New directors & direction, (while Aonuma & Miyamoto still supervise & have the final word) the gameplay mechanics + enhancements, beautiful visual enhancements, vista views, the ability to battle 25+ enemies simultaneously on screen, advanced lighting, textures, etc. I think it possesses an excellent chance.

There's ALWAYS a chance.

Regardless, many people don't see OOT as the best in the series to begin with.

The entire thing is subjective.

But no one really knows yet, do they? Even after it comes out, people will still argue about it.

I really don't understand the point of this thread.

Can a new game improve upon what an older title has done? Of course.

Will it? Depends. However, no amount of discussion will be able to decide that until we've all played it and made up our individual minds.

Wind waker toppled oot , as did link to the past , it pretoppled oot. Links awakening as well. So I'd assume that yes, this new one would topple oot as well.

Damnit, just when I thought he couldn't come up with a more useless hypothetical Zelda thread. :rolleyes

You can ignore the thread Eric, no one forces you to participate. Many/most argue that WW didn't even surpass OOT.

Meh, Majora's Mask is the best Zelda game and OOT is basically LttP in 3D. It's an awesome game, but OOT isn't as great as people make out.

IMO, Ocarina of Time is not only the best Zelda game, but possibly the best videogame that I've ever played. I greatly anticipate the new one.

That said, I do think it's way too early to be making a thread like this.

Yes. Wind Waker topped it for me anyway as a game. As far as i am aware many of the same people are doing it so i am sure they can improve on things further. It looks really good already.

I don't think it would take too much to do that. If they bring back the day cycle of Majora and combine that with the number of dungeons in OOT and the scale of the overworld in WW then I think they will be a good part of the way there. Considering that they have at least a year and half left for actual game design, all of these things and more seem possible.

I don't see OoT as the best in the series AND there is NO WAY to know just how good the new game would be. Everything you might suggest right now is baed on visuals...

Majora's Mask is damn good. Pitty the first hour of the game is AWFUL and puts a lot of ppl off. Plus many ppl fail to understand how easy it is to manage the "time" and how it works. MM's dungeons and side quests are absolutely awsome. I probably like OoT a bit more as overall its a better package (more epic, more dungeons, 1st Zelda in 3D, adult Link etc) but I really do like MM a lot.

WW dumbed down the difficulty, dungeon complexity and had far too many fetch quests. I actually enjoyed the sailing and the sense of freedom and discovery and the fighting mechanics were also very good. Rest of the game was pretty average though.

I wouldn't mind that overworld size as long as they make it entertaining. I found WW's overworld to be extremely bland once you went over it the first few times. There needed to be more to it. That's why I liked MM's more compact overworld.

Wind Waker did already top OoT for me. But Link's Awakening beats them all. :)

But what is actually known about the new Zelda? Has anything been revealed regarding gameplay? From the features I've seen mentioned, almost all of them are graphics related.

Nothing, nothing at all touches LTTP. Sorry. I keep trying to play OoT and MM and they're just awful. Argh. It's almost like Nintendo made an awesome universe and don't know how to properly replicate it :(

I guess I'm the only person who really isn't all that wowed by OoT.

Nah, anyone that has played both A Link To The Past and Link's Awakening (when they came out, don't want to hear from people that never played them until years later on an emulator...BE GONE!!) knows that those are the best Zelda games by FAR. :p

Oh, and Majora's Mask? Meh. Wind Waker? The sailing. Enough said. Four Swords? Awesome, even if it's a SNES rehash in some ways. Minish Cap could be pretty good, and the new Zelda coming out does look really nice, but after what happened with Wind Waker, which I thought was awesome at first, I'm almost convinced that something as stupid as sailing will be put into it to drag it down, too.

2D Zelda >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 3D Mario with a sword.

I think it has the potential. Wind Waker's engine feels 1000x more intuitive and responsive than OOT, but OOT is already a classic and it's hard to top those.

Zelda MM was better than OoT, but if he meant sales OoT is still the Zelda king. I don't think new GC Zelda will topple that.

hyperbolically metafictive
unlikely. ead's gamecube games have without exception fallen considerably short of their best n64 games in terms of polish and scope. i'm not convinced they're still capable of games of oot's quality.

and of course this will be the fourth game to use essentially oot's game mechanics. it will necessarily feel a bit old.

I do!

Wind Waker would have topped it had it not been for the difficulty(or lack of), and the damn fetch quest.

The entire 2D Zelda series is far too different from the 3d titles to make a direct comparison though.

Its..uh..2d?

I really dont know. The 2D games just feel "different". Instead of a vast open field, you have something that is rather more like a maze. Travelling through the field was a challenge in itself in the 2D zelda games, whereas in the 3D games the field only serves as a hub, or as a connection point.

I really hope so. I'm anticipating this game on a level I was anticipating for OoT. I think it might rest upon when we find out when exactly it's set, and what that means for the dungeons, as well as other probable features.

I have confidence that Nintendo will make this one of the best games EVER, and that's saying a lot.

Well we can only hope. Eiji Aounoma's words about it are certainly promesing. Maybe when we all start to doubt Nintendo's old AAA magic they will start to deliver again.
