‘Smurfs 2′ Tops Global Box Office, While ’2 Guns’ Dominates Domestic. Sony's sequel opens at #1 worldwide, but only #3 domestically

While American audiences opted for more mature fare this weekend, international moviegoers fell head-over-heels for the little blue men of “The Smurfs 2,” pushing it to the top of the worldwide box office this frame.

Sony’s live action-toon hybrid earned $80.3 million in total, $27.8 million from Stateside auds and $52.5 million from 43 overseas markets.

Domestically, “Smurfs 2″ opened Wednesday to earn as much in five days in release as Universal’s “2 Guns” earned in three. The R-rated actioner bowed to $27.4 million, a nice start for a film budgeted close to $60 million.

Fox’s “The Wolverine” took second Friday-to-Sunday with $21.7 million, an almost 60% week-over-week drop, followed by “Smurfs 2,” which earned $18.2 million during the weekend.

I'm a pretty big film buff, generally see something every weekend. I found out 2 Guns existed less than a week ago, how did it do that well?!?

Really poor for Smurfs 2. I think Sony were expecting a 100mil worldwide weekend so it must have under performed overseas too

I'm really glad to see that The Conjuring is doing really well, one of my favorite horror movies in quite some time (perhaps besides the third segment in V/H/S 2). And we get another James Wan horror movie in another month! I thought Insidious was a little more uneven than The Conjuring but I'm still curious to see the sequel. I have faith he can deliver another fun F&F sequel too but I hope he doesn't completely abandon horror fare for blockbusters.

2 guns sounds about as generic a movie as you can get. You know when Mark walberg is in a movie you could just pluck him out and insert anyone else and get the same result. Betty White teaming with Denzel, however, would have hit 1billion.

Anecdotal, but I actually found out about 2 Guns the day before it came out and I only saw it because of Denzel. Pretty serviceable film, but has some great actors in it. It has Edward James Olmos as a Mexican drug lord though, so I highly recommend it.

You should actually read about it before making those comments, that number does not have China's $45-60m opening weekend of other big markets it has not opened in.

The foreign BO numbers haven't been updated since last Sunday, too. So expect another bump from that.

It seems to me that Universal were shy on marketing 2 Guns (which is unusually given the talent) because they didn't finance it.

The studio is only distributing in the US so maybe they weren't as motivated to push it over the hill given that they didn't have much if anything invested in it.

I'm also surprised that RIPD has totally faded into obscurity and is somehow still making (an admittedly paltry) $2.3m this weekend.

I was thinking the same thing. And to think that several people in the biz were predicting not only big things for the Smurfs sequel but that the Smurfs IP would be Sony Pictures' biggest 'studio owned' IP.

Hmmm. I'm not sure this sequel is going to pull in such impressive International numbers this time around. But with a sequel already greenlit and scheduled for 2015 Sony better hope this film has similar legs to the first film.

What a disaster. And people actually think a sequel will happen?

Don't even start. I've already had my fill of fanboy tantrums in the 'PR sequel' thread a few days ago.

Good grief.

wot

You might want to do some reading yourself my man.

That's what was estimated/predicted to be the total run in China, not the opening there.

That's the ideal max it is predicted to be able to do in China for the entire run. Not opening weekend lol. It's weekend numbers overseas aren't even close to that.

I'm also ashamed to say it, but I really enjoyed the first film. Can see why others think it is complete trash though, so the poor turnout was expected

What other ips do Sony own? I know they have distribution rights to bond and spider man but they don't own the ip. Can't really think of many other franchises they own. Men in Black?

Their animation studio seems to have a decent output though. Cloudy with a chance and Hotel Transylvania are pretty good and have room for growth with sequels

I'd agree with that. I'd say Men In Black is arguably their biggest 'actve' IP but that's entirely dependent on Will Smith starring and he's almost certainly done with it. There was talk of a reboot (and in this day and age it wouldn't surprise me) but it's really a franchise built around Smith.

There is also Ghostbusters (which hasn't had a new entry in over 20 years and hopefully won't any time soon) and the DaVinci code films which do well even if the sequel performed way under the original.

Though Sony Pictures don't have DC or Marvel of their own to fall back on they should be taking more risks as a result but that's exactly what they don't do and the result like bewildering stuff like the Total Recall remake.

Good Lord. Conjuring has made more than 5x its budget and still doing well. Friggin amazing.

James Wan is nothing if not efficient. I know that to save as much money as possible when shooting Saw, they wound up filming only a couple of takes for any given scene, which obviously shows in how hilariously bad Danny Glover and Cary Elwes are in nearly all of their scenes.

Sony has the rights to the bond franchise. Skyfall was a monster for them. The sequel will be just as big. Spider man isn't really "their" IP per se- but they own the rights to it as long as they continue to make films- which will be more or less forever.

The spider man license also means they own the rights to pretty much all spider man characters. If they wanted to do spin off films from the property (venom, spider man 2099, carnage, black cat, morbius) there's really nothing stopping them from doing so.

between those two they'll be fine in terms of franchises. I'd rather see original content anyway.

Isn't Wan doing Fast 7? That's going to be a monster. It's next year and not 2015 right? Also this has just not been Sony's year at all. Do they have anything big slated for the rest of the year?

Yeah same here. I never saw a single trailer or ad for it. I actually found out about it from Rotten Tomatoes.

Then again I don't think I've seen a single trailer for Smurfs 2 though either...

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 should do really well for them.

That's actually pretty bad for The Smurfs, even internationally. The first movie was quite big. Oh well I'm not too sad about it underperforming, I'm still angry at the first one for outgrossing Tintin :/

I saw a commercial for 2 Guns literally every half hour while watching stuff on USA or TNT or networks like that

I made a point of saying 'studio owned' franchises in my post. Neither of the franchises that you mentioned are owned by Sony thus are not 'studio owned'.

Bond is owned by MGM with Sony having a deal to co-finance (25% IIRC) the next two flms. Sony own the theatrical rights to Spider Man. They do not own the Spider Man IP.
