WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers Hands-on Previews

Some key points from the previews:
  • The game has greatly evolved from the clumsy reveal trailer back in 2021.
  • A by the book Soulslike game in terms of map, progress, and boss designs.
  • Interconnected maps further expanded by shortcuts, defeating bosses, etc.
  • Combat is fluid and satisfying, more actiony rather than relying on RPG stats.
  • Souls like character progress, with a spin of a massive Diablo-like skill tree, you can't unlock all the nodes - need to pick and specialize in one direction.
  • Build variety is potentially great with different weapons having different specialization. Respec is easy and cost-free.
  • Perfect doge and parry will generate unique resources "fallen feathers", which can dynamically enhance combat skills such as shortening charged attack time.
  • Art style is a highlight with the inspiration from Ming Dynasty and folk lores.

WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers devs offered 4-hour first chapter demo to various Chinese content creators earlier this month. And the preview embargo was just lifted.

Pure gameplay preview.

Following are the previews with Chinese commentaries. Hopefully soon there will be auto-generated English CC.

I'll try to translate some key impressions from those previews.

Regardless the quality of the game. Incels are already winning on this one.

What I’ve innately learned is that most people think they can replicate the SoulsBorne formula, but they never can. It’s not about cranking up the difficulty, it’s not about the repeated dying and losing exp, it’s not about big battles… there just is a perfect blend of precision to everything that only Miyazaki and FromSoftware know how to create.

There are great soulslike games, Lies of P, for instance. Great level designs, combat and boss fights, and absolutely justify the acclimations it received. It's not Miyazaki 's masterpiece, and everyone agrees with that, but doesn't prevent it from being a great game.

More broadly, Soulslike is more of becoming a genre rather than being knockoffs of the original souls games. Just like the genre roguelike.

But that’s my point. It can never be its own genre because only FromSoftware knows how to make it. Everything else is just an Action RPG with knock off mechanics.

I played half of Lies of P before I stopped. Just doesn’t hold a candle to any of the From games in any way.

It’s like trying to recreate Pokémon. Just doesn’t work. Yes I know Palworld is a thing, but it will never be on the level of Pokémon.

There are way too many souls-like games in the market right now.

Way too many.
I think the Souls genre is a relatively easy genre for Eastern developers with little experience to develop. Souls games are traditionally linear, don't emphasize graphics or story/cutscenes, and western gamers will happily buy the game if the combat is good. For example, the game Black Myth Wukong apparently cost less than 50 mil to develop, and it had cutting edge graphics, which most of these games are not even striving for

This genre seems important for young studios trying to gain traction in the industry. Hopefully it leads to bigger and more diverse games in the future

I don't think any soulslike games are aiming to be "the same level of OG", or "replicate the soulsborne formula".
They try to get inspiration and ride the trend, and some of them worked out greatly.

You of course have your personal likings and opinions, but we were talking can those game be great - and there are better metrics for that.

Seems cool and is great that we are getting more and more Chinese developed games.

Also, being day one on gamepass is awesome.

My only complain is that the mc looks too skinny... Her legs looks like a pair of twigs.

Thicker in the right places is always better:

Straight up Souls copy, but at least they got the animations/combat weight looking correct in the gameplay video. Also the atmosphere is actually pretty good. I'm not against trying it.

Yeah man, i am sick of them. Where are my third person shooters? why everything has to be fighting with swords and shit

Im more annoyed that we still dont have a proper sci-fi soulslike. Fuck fantasy shit with swords. Give me lightsabers, vibroblades, laser guns instead of bows, exploring Lovecraftian space horror places.

Nioh did better with the melee combat and it's best boss battles are a match for any Souls game. It's much weaker in most other areas though. The Nioh 2 beta was a glimpse at how good it could be (which didn't carry over to the full game). I really want to see a game that can be as good as that was with better art/graphics and maintain that quality throughout. That would be a match for Fromsoft's games. I'm hoping this game or one of the others could be something like that.

At least combat and movements look fast and fluid unlike your typical fromsoftware's clunky boredom, but in the end of the day it's just another generic soulslike garbage so meeeeh

Not even really all Dark Souls though cause they aren't that hard. It's like a mix of Dark Souls/DMC. Kind of crazy cause I did want more of these games and now they just came flooding into the industry. I like Dark Souls games but I have to be in the mood for that. Games more like DMC let you continue the story can drop it down to easy if you need to buy you don't have to grind more level or git gud just to progress.

For those saying there are too many souls likes, can you post some of the upcoming ones? I can only think of 2. This one and the First Berserker. 2 is hardly too many. If you want to go by the all the ones that have been already released then you have to do that of every genre, and just like that there are too many of every kind of game. If you don't like they genre, ignore it. Either that or apply the same bitching and moaning about first person shooters.

Another one soon (and has a demo) is AI Limit.

Yeah it's like the move from 'Doom clones' to the FPS genre. Black Myth already put its own spin on it, this game seems like more by the numbers, but devs will slowly move out from the rigid design requirements and make unique variations.

Could be decent. Don't remember this being a gamepass launch but if it is I'll surely check it out

I’m sure it makes sense the more you’re exposed to it, like I have no issues with Three Kingdoms names. But as a casual trying to keep up with these samey sounding souls likes it’s tough.

Shut up dork
