Microsoft is giving away 8 months of Xbox Game Pass subscription for free in India to existing subscribers, with new subscribers getting 7 months for free. Microsoft has sent an email to existing subscribers stating the cause to be the Reserve Bank of India's new mandates regarding recurring payments.

"The Reserve Bank of India recently added new requirements for processing recurring transactions through the RBI-E mandate, intended to enhance the safety and security of these transactions," reads the email from Microsoft. "We at Microsoft are updating our payment systems to enable recurring payments in accordance with these requirements. In the meantime to help avoid disruption, we have added 8-months of Xbox Game Pass ultimate to your account at no additional charge so you don't have to worry about making recurring payments during this time and can just enjoy playing games.

Do you have to pay with rupees if you change store region?

Wow very very generous of MS, especially because the "issue" isnt even caused by them.

But is Xbox or Gamepass even a thing in India?
I cannot imagine that there a lot of Xbox or Gamepass users there.

i wonder if it will work if i make a new account and change the region to india? and i wonder if that would have any adverse side effects for my online experience and other accounts on that xbox?

Reading GAF it seems that everybody wants to sub to Gamepass but nobody wants to pay for it. Every poster talks about certain tricks you can do to avoid a higher fee, be it conversion of existing subs, 1$ deals or just plain free. Very strange attitude. I wonder how many will stick to the service when/if MS decides to raise the fee or close all loopholes.

I have read online that all accounts have access to gamepass titles on a xbox. You could download using India account, then play using main account.

But I feel gold conversion trick itself is good enough for most people.

Some people I know are getting 8 month's free even if they were paying full monthly price.

You cannot pay for it even if you wanted to.

Microsoft should do this internationally for new customers.

For example, buy an Xbox Series S/X and get 12 months of Gamepass for free.

That would certainly generate a lot of sales.

Maybe new Gamepass customers who don't need an Xbox should get the 8 months free option.

other than some apps, games, movies, etc., possibly not working if you change your region... is there any other adverse effects to playing online if i change my region to india? or anything else at all i should worry about?

like, will i only be able to play online games with indians? will i have trouble finding other players because i live in FL but xbox thinks i live in india?

or will everything be exactly the same, itll just think i moved to india suddenly? lol. i have read it makes you stay in that region for at least 3 months, but if there is no difference to my experience then it shouldnt be a big deal... right?

I think they would have already if needed, but sales on hardware have been brisk without.
The x for sure, the s in some regions is still hard to get. And even in regions where s isn't sold out I bet they expect it to at Christmas.
But I would expect a gamepass bundle with the s at some point.
