Green Man Gaming have once again joined forces with the Golden Joysticks and are offering those that have voted before 20 October 2014 a free copy of XCOM: Enemy Unknown (whilst stocks last).

This game will be available to you after 23 October 2014, and we’ll send you instructions of how to claim your free game at that time, which will include registering with Playfire and linking to Steam to gain your code.

I got Civ 5 for this thing last year, and it ended up being my most played steam game. Pretty cool of these people for doing this again.

I thought you were exaggerating... but I agree - that list is absolutely atrocious.

No Divinity, Super Smash Bros U, or even Shadow of Mordor. Ridiculous.

Edit: Scratch that. All categories are ridiculous.

I actually voted Ground Zeroes as GOTY.
It's the one game (besides BF4) that I really put more than 10 hours into this year, and I love every second playing it. It just makes the wait for TPP even more ridiculous.

Terrifying.

But with all of the omissions it has, you might as well vote for whatever.

What does "linking your playfire account to steam" mean?

Playfire sponsors specific games for a period, and during that period every achievement you earn will give you credit on Green Man Gaming's store. It's not a lot of money, but it adds up if you're into that sort of thing. Linking your Steam account allows Playfire to track the achievements you earn, and thus the credit you receive.

My favorite game in the last 5 years at least. Get it, people.

Enemy Within adds a lot to the game, in case anyone is wondering.

And, oddly, the unit customization DLC is a lot of fun. Makes your characters more personalized and memorable, just don't get too attached to them.

So if you enjoy the base game a lot, consider getting those during the inevitable Christmastime sales.

As much as I liked Mario 3D World and Zelda: ALBW, I don't really think they were GOTY candidates for me. I thought compared to Galaxy, 3D World was a slight disappointment (mind you I don't have a Wii U so I only had enough time to finish it at a cousin's house), and Zelda was a game I finished once and never touched again. Ground Zeroes was spectacular (and the replay value completely negated any length issues IMO), and I got BF4 to go with my PS4 in January, with 200+ hours put into it and still kicking. I will admit the entries were kind of weird but honestly Ground Zeroes completely surpassed my expectations in the gameplay and makes me hyped for TPP more than any game I've ever played (not hyperbole, I'm really serious, then again I'm only 16 so I wasn't really following anything pre-PS2 days).

One of the best games of the past half-decade. Do it. And get Enemy Within.

I have to imagine it can run on integrated graphics on low.

Ha-ha, that's fine. We all have different tastes and such. I may play GZ in the future, so I suppose I should reserve judgement until then.

What I meant was more that it's annoying to see awards snub all of the great games (and potentially great games) released this year, biasing whatever results occur. I mean, this has been the Year of the RPG, and yet the only RPG on the GotY list is the RPG-lite South Park game (or maybe Dark Souls 2, if you're crazy enough to count that). There are gross oversights all around this awards ceremony.

I already have X-Com EU, and I agree it is one of the best games to be released over the last few years. But I filled out the Golden Joystick votes anyway. Yikes at that person of the year list...

Excellent. Been meaning to pick this up for PC for a while.

Also, I'm not sure The Wolf Among Us qualifies for the "best original game" category, being based on an existing property and all. But maybe I'm just misunderstanding it :P

Anyone got there code? They sent a email telling me to claim my code and it is so damn confusing.

They could have simplified this whole process by just sending the code to those that voted. The fact they sent me a email telling me to claim my game shows they know I voted. Fucks sake.

One of the best games ever. I already got it for free twice, psPLus and a GMG preorder bonus deal, and then bought Enemy Within because it sooo fucking good.

They want you to make a PlayFire account and link it, which is why they don't simply give you the code.

I did get the code, though, just so you know it's possible :P

Got it for my tablet and I'm grabbing this for PC.

Great game.

edit

Received the email with code without problems. Already in my Steam Library.
