A Spanish page found an interview where Yoko Taro says that for the anime adaptation, he included a scene in the script where 2B and 9S have sex, but it was rejected (I simply translated it from Spanish to English, credits to the original)

Did you know Yoko Taro mentioned that his idea of including a scene where 2B and 9S have a sexual relationship was rejected for the anime? In an interview around the end of the first cour, here’s an excerpt:

Yoko Taro: "In the early stages, we respected the game version a lot, and the anime closely followed the game’s storyline. But I thought it doesn’t make sense to see the same thing again, and that fans were probably expecting something different from the game. So, we eventually decided to find a good balance between the parts of the game that worked well and some original additions for the anime."

Taura: "Producer Matsumoto wanted to keep points that stayed faithful to the game, while I tried to stray a bit from that fidelity. That was the dynamic. Within the team, the conversation about the '9S●● incident' was quite shocking."

Interviewer: "The '9S●● incident'? Could you tell us more about it...?"

Yoko Taro: "When I included in the script a scene where 9S and 2B do ●●, producer Matsumoto told me, '9S doesn’t ●●,' so that scene was removed (laughs).

The producer was worried about what fans might think. I’ve always considered that works, whether the game or the anime, belong to the fans, and the perspective of someone like producer Matsumoto, who is closer to that vision, made me understand that the scene had to be removed."

Yoko Taro: "Yes, but I’d like you to explain something deeper, like ‘Yoko Taro is this kind of creator for this reason.’"

Taura: "When Yoko directed the game, he was in his 40s. Now, in his 50s, it seems like something has changed. The 40-year-old Yoko would never have let 9S do something like ‘●●.’ But including it now means that, in some way, he managed to grasp within himself the atmosphere of ‘●●●.’"

Yoko Taro: "I think I didn’t understand what ‘●●’ was until I reached my 50s."

Taura: "Yoko has had a long adolescence... he has finally become an adult."

Yoko Taro: "It’s true. I didn’t even write about ‘●●’ before, and when I did, it always got rejected (laughs). It’s not easy to find the right moment for something like that."

LATER IN THE INTERVIEW, HE SAYS THE FOLLOWING:

Interviewer: "Taura-san, you were the main planner and designer in the game version. What do you think about 2B and 9S’s action in the anime version?"

Yoko Taro (interrupting): "Well, I feel like something is missing."

Taura: "Why are you answering for me? (laughs)"

Yoko Taro: "Oh, you don’t think the same?"

Taura: "No... for me, the action is perfect."

Yoko Taro: "Although, honestly, I would have liked to add a scene of... you know, ●●."

Taura: "Please! (laughs) Seriously, the anime and the game are different media. In the game, player

I mean we had this line in the 9s route in the game:

"You're just thinking about how much you want to **** 2B, aren't you?"

There are alot 4 letter naughty words.

Par for the course for a guy whose work regimen consist in getting black out drunk, write whatever genius story he has in mind at the moment, and wake up in the morning with no recollection of what he wrote.

I like how the literal creator of these characters has this idea and then someone else is like "nah mate, they wouldn't do that".

So was Yoko censored? I thought this didn't happen in the East?
There is a lot of censorship that happens within Japan's entertainment industry. There is content within games that are okay here in the West that are not okay in Japan. This isn't content censorship by means of governing bodies like Eirin or CERO though, this is just a studio creatively restricting Yoko Taro so far as content.
