CELEBRATED GAME DEVELOPER SHINJI MIKAMI
JOINS ZENIMAX MEDIA

Creator of Resident Evil Will Develop Titles for Bethesda Softworks
Mikami’s Tango Gameworks acquired in latest deal for ZeniMax

October 28, 2010 (London, UK) – ZeniMax Media Inc., parent company of noted game publisher Bethesda Softworks, today announced acclaimed game designer and director, Shinji Mikami, has joined ZeniMax in a deal where ZeniMax acquired Tango Gameworks, the development shop founded and run by Mikami. Best known as the creator of the Resident Evil series, Mikami is a 20-year veteran of the industry who has developed numerous award-winning titles.
“It’s refreshing to find a publisher who understands, trusts, and supports the development of blockbuster games and works to make it a collaborative effort,” said Mikami. “The library of AAA franchise titles ZeniMax owns speaks for itself. We are very excited to be joining ZeniMax and working with a company that is dedicated to creating the best games ever made.”
Based in Tokyo, Mikami has an extraordinary track record as one of the world’s most successful game developers. Five of his projects, including Resident Evil, have scored 90 or above on Metacritic.com and Gamerankings.com.
The development studio Mikami founded, Tango Gameworks, is dedicated to AAA multi-platform game development and has attracted some of Japan’s most accomplished and experienced developers who served key roles on game franchises like Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy. Tango will continue to be run by Shinji Mikami, and he will serve as the creative lead for all future projects.
“Shinji Mikami has earned a stellar reputation as one of the industry’s finest game developers,” said Robert Altman, Chairman and CEO of ZeniMax Media. “He has repeatedly created hit titles that have earned praise from fans and critics around the world. We share his vision for innovative, genre-defining games and look forward to working with Shinji and his team at Tango.”
Tango joins a distinguished group of development studios at ZeniMax that includes Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, and Arkane Studios. This most recent acquisition reflects Bethesda Softworks’ unwavering commitment to delivering premier titles to gamers worldwide.

Tango-chan looks weird as hell.

Boom: Zenimax buys Tango and Shinji Mikami
Zenimax just confirmed it’s bought Tango Gameworks and, with it, Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.

The studio, based in Tokyo, will stay under Mikami’s direction.

“Shinji Mikami has earned a stellar reputation as one of the industry’s finest game developers,” said Zenimax chief Robert Altman.

“He has repeatedly created hit titles that have earned praise from fans and critics around the world. We share his vision for innovative, genre-defining games and look forward to working with Shinji and his team at Tango.”

Nothing was mentioned in the press release of any specific dev project. Mikami’s most recent title is Sega shooter Vanquish, developed at Platinum.

The move is the latest in a string of high profile buys for Zenimax, which include id Software and Arkane Studios.

This means:
1. No sequel for Vanquish or at least he won't be involved if there will be one.
2. His role in Shadows of the Damned is pretty much non existent?! or is finished already.
3. Mikami x idtech 5 = ????

Woah, Zenimax is starting to have a pretty nice collection of teams.

Edit: And the hell at that gif? :lol

Whoa! Didn't expect that to happen.

BTW I am alrady in love with this studio. Their website is pretty awesome. On the staff page the hobbies of Ikumi Nakamura:

My hobby is work.Right now I'm also good at thinking of games that have no chance of being put on the market.

:lol

Director at Platinum, producer at Grasshopper and owner of Tango? seems like he's got alot of work.

Is he taking a break from Platinum?

...Wow.

This was completely unexpected.

Hopefully he'll still be given lease to make his games as awesome and over the top as they have been, and Zenimax won't stifle his creativity.

He was at Platinum on contract basis. I think?

great purchase, even though i was hoping he'd permanently join platinum games. at least this should mean that his games will get strong marketing support in the west.

As far as I'm aware, it was just a freelance contract with Platinum Games/Sega. Same with GHM. Temporary work while he set up his own studio, Tango.

Not necessarily to the first 2 questions, as far as we're aware there's nothing to stop him from working for other studios or other publishers, it's Tango who can't work on anything else.

Well, that was kind of unexpected, I hope Zenimax give his best support, Mikami deserves that and more....

It is, we already knew that.

He is an employee of Zenimax now, he can't work for whoever he wants anymore like recent years and his contracts with Platinum/Sega and Grasshopper/EA.

good for them , but I wanted them to buy Obsidian Entertainment , so that they can do Treyarch-infinity ward style Fallouts.. ( yeah I want Fallout every year )

Why is he making his own studio and poaching people from Platinum, though? Madworld director, Masafumi Takada and a few others. I don't quite understand it.

So based on the official site, Ikumi Nakamura is at Tango now too. Mikami has also promoted her from a concept designer to a director. I wonder which other Platinum staffers he will steal...

Given the good relations between him and Kamiya I doubt it's 'poaching' poaching
