Let's say that Trump is elected President and builds his Great Wall

President Trump does that along with his pipe dream of deporting 11 million immigrants from the US during his first term. Wouldn't that just crater America's economy overnight? That would literally take an entire labor force out and with no one left to fill them since no American would want to work for less than minimum wage like many illegal immigrants do. I'm not sure if it would be a 2008-level calamity, but wouldn't someone point out to him how damaging a move that would be to America?

Yes. This is why candidates whose policies sound like the schemes of a James Bond villain shouldn't be taken seriously.

Yes, we enter a recession. I mean, maybe the lost jobs are offset by alien-catching jobs. But we definitely lose economic activity spurred by their demand and population growth stagnates.

If he's elected President I very much doubt he'd be able to actually enforce his policies...
How is he doing yo arrange for the deportation of 11 million people? Who is going to oversee and execute that mad plan of his?

I'm not inclined to believe anyone working in this country should get less than minimum wage, illegal or not.

Trump wants to simplify the tax code and if implemented would be able take care of some of the labor costs for the small businesses. Large businesses can easily absorb the increased costs except for big farms. Maybe we could subsidize them some more but I'm not really feeling that as a long term solution.

Logistically you probably cannot deport 11 million people

Just like you cannot confiscate 300+ million guns

I would imagine that if he did win and presented this ludrious, and extremely expensive round up, that the conceding aspect would be to allow the 11 million or what ever the number , to stay if they actually made an attempt to be here legally. Work visas student visas etc.

We already have a massive farmhand labor shortage in California agriculture. If this did come to pass I'd probably be out of a job due to the sudden sharp decrease in ag shipments and everyone else around the country would feel it on their food bills. It's stupid to argue as it's an idea rooted in fantasy though so no sweat.

This is where we are.

This is the point we are at when we excuse the fact that there are workers making sub-minimum wages in a first world country because fixing such a thing would cause a few years of discomfort.

Oh no, the corporations might be forced to hire people for fair wages. Calamity!

Don't know about the US, but that might create a huge economical crisis in Mexico as well.

A large part of those deported will now have to turn to crime to make ends meet.

Cartels HR departments will be overflowed with resumes and thousands of new recruits for all their levels since wall street and holywood still need their coke to function.

You really think Donald Trump of all people is gonna take it to the big corporations and force them to pay Americans a living wage?

No, honestly, I think Trump is good for fucking nothing but saying what people want to hear, like any other fucking snake in politics.

Don't underestimate us mexicans. You can build the largest, tallest wall in human history. We would still get through it.

Of course it will.

Pro-wall, anti-immigration people like to pretend that illegal immigrants contribute nothing to the economy and are "just leeches". It's a completely fabricated narrative.

EDIT: The "big fat door" thing he added months afterward doesn't make any sense either. What does it even mean? The current processes for legal immigration take years and thousands of dollars (not to mention knowing the right people to sponsor a work visa). The process is incredibly inefficient and ignores many people year after year even if they do have the resources to do the paperwork because it's constantly operating at capacity. Is he going to completely overhaul the immigration system to funnel the 11 million illegal immigrants who were freshly deported back in through a legal channel that doesn't take years and doesn't require obscene amounts of money? Of course not. Then the answer naturally becomes, you can kick people out but they'll come back in. A dumb wall isn't gonna stop people whose lives literally depend on it. It's all dumb lip service with zero thought put into it. Anyone who legitimately thinks his immigration "policy" is sound and logical is as thick as he is.

It'll be the classiest most luxurious deportation process you've ever seen. It'll be so good that actual citizens will want to be deported by Trump!

I will enjoy our lab grown nutrient slurry if it means America will be whit- I mean, American again.

That was a very different time with a much smaller pool of immigrants - Plus, if you read between the lines of those events, it seems more like it was government-sponsored Union Busting that was deporting actual citizens of the US - Which goes against the grain of the current situation, since up until a few years ago, most unions didn't allow undocumented workers.

You can just look at Alabama to see what it means for the economy. They passed some legislation that really went after illegals there so basically they all left the state. Now their agriculture industry is in shambles because Americans won't work in a field all day, and if they do, they don't do it as well.

There was a Vice segment about it on HBO, here's a shitty cam rip of it on YT

I believe it would definitely hurt the economy pretty badly. Not to mention the emotional/financial damage that will be done to not only those deported, but their friends and families too.

Surely someone must have told Trump that it's a stupid idea right, deporting 11 million immigrants who be a terrible idea for the obvious reason of loss of economic activity, but won't such a feat damage international trade.

What's precluding it from happening today? If President Trump makes it his #1 priority, it will happen. Republicans already control Congress.

I'm pretty sure Trump isn't actually going to follow through with 90% of the things he says. He's just trying to say the craziest stuff to get elected. I doubt he even believes most of it.

Congress + President =/= North-Korean style raid of authorities marching into people's homes and workplaces and deporting 11 million people.

But what does that say about the people if someone thinks that saying those things will appeal to the masses.

Yup. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's smarter than he's making himself sound and everything he's said thus far is just pandering to the people he knows will vote for somebody that says these kind of things.

Not all of those 11 million are in the labor force. The labor force is about 155 million and illegal immigrants are estimated to be about 5% of it. So this would not be a very large portion of it and probably would not tank the economy.

The problem with Trump's plan is that it would require extraordinary and draconian measures to carry out.
