That's a related issue and not the issue at hand (as far we know). The rumor is that they will stop selling. Yes what you brought up are other problems with digital but what's supposedly going to happen right now is something that happens in the physical world too which is that they don't want to put the effort in selling old games. If it turns out that they won't let you download then sure it's a digital problem being presented. There is a bit of both to be honest. Sony deciding to go this route is on Sony. The mere fact that all purchases/activations (or even downloads/license checks) of all the games on a given platform can be blocked from the top floor with one button press is inherent of the digital market.
With the physical market, even if all stores stop selling copies it is impossible to prevent individuals from selling or sharing their privately-owned copies. Unless the disk physically breaks, Sony stops having a say in what happens to my copy of a PS2 game the moment I have the disk in my hands. I can go and buy used games, I can create a freaking gaming library in common with 50 other people and have an always-accessible shared archive of games. In a digital market, most of these are impossible to begin withIt' and all can be prevented if the platform holder decides so, or even just goes under and shuts down operations.
They are telling us that we should expect (and be ok with) digital stores to close down.Where are all those digital only fanboys now?
Go, to , hell
That will happen in the future, there is no doubt about it and when it does people will have lost purchases that they didn't have backed up. Oh and back-ups work only through the Content Manager which also relies on Sony's servers. If it turns out that they won't let you download then sure it's a digital problem being presented.
It's how it's always been, patches as well. You will still be able to get your games, just not buy new ones I think. Is that everyone else's reading?
For a time and then they will kill that feature as well. You will still be able to get your games, just not buy new ones I think. Is that everyone else's reading?

Enhancements?Playing some Morrowind on my XSX with a bevy of enhancements.
Don't get me wrong, but why does there need to be any protections? I certainly wouldn't be against it, it just seems like we have to develop some good reasoning. For a time and then they will kill that feature as well.
There really needs to be some protection for consumers who buy digital.
PSP store has been closed for some time, and you can still download your digital content via the account list.Feels like potential to lose a lot of stuff for good like patches and DLC.
I could see this happening to the 360 store as well since they already migrated the compatible stuff to the current Xbox store.
There's always a chance that closing it down could mean an initiative to bring PS1-3 to PS5 in a way they couldn't before. (slim chance)
Let's be real: this same thing would've happened with or without Jim Ryan.
Another concern occasionally raised by PlayStation devotees involves the company's once-ubiquitous PlayStation 2. While Sony has in recent years devoted resources to bringing a handful of popular older titles to the PlayStation 4, the better part of that library is lost to time. For now, it seems that's where it'll remain.
"When we've dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much," says Ryan. "That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?"
Because PS3 is a way bigger install base.Wouldn't that be expected since the Vita came out 6 years after the PS3?
Everyone? ....and we have been saying it for years.
Let's hope they have a change of heart if enough people demand it. They seemed to not mind PS4 to PS5 when that same quote was used as concern for the PS5 not playing PS4 games.![]()
A physical disc takes a long time to rot. I haven't ever had it happen and I have some PlayStation 1 games. If we could get some protections like 'the games will be available for re-download for 20 years' then availability might be the same length of time as it takes a game to rot (minimum). If a physical disc rots or ceases to work in a disc drive they don't owe you anything, how is this different?
That's the best argument for avoiding digital. They may as well say 'don't buy from us digitally because if this platform isn't successful enough, we will pull digital support from it sooner'.Because PS3 is a way bigger install base.
No that's the Playstation way. OG Xbox and 360 games work just fine on the XSX/XSS and Steam can still play games from over a decade and a half ago. That's the digital way. Move people to new platforms.
Funny thing is digital was promoted as the "infinite" storefront where games (like oldies on GOG) can sit there forever for sale.
Who knew used discs being sold person to person would outlast them.
Sony pulling access really comes to two reason (well 3 if you combine both):A physical disc takes a long time to rot. I haven't ever had it happen and I have some PlayStation 1 games. If we could get some protections like 'the games will be available for re-download for 20 years' then availability might be the same length of time as it takes a game to rot (minimum).

It is. Now, look:And they say digital is the way to go

No, but you can still download your games from the list in your account.wait, PSP store is still up ?
I mean more like DLC that you don't own. Guess now is the time to get it if you really want it.PSP store has been closed for some time, and you can still download your digital content via the account list.
Delisted games from PS3 to the PS4 still receive patches.
The download list that is... in the store they are removing. You should still have access to your digital content in the download list under your account if the PSP is anything to go by.
how the fuck are you going to search games without the store front? Sony removed all your games from the web store which was the only way to search for shit on older systems, if they only retain the dowload lists for the old systems it's gonna be almost imposible to look for anything in your libraries unless you only own a couple of games. The article is specific to talking about buying the games, not downloading them if you already own them? Or does this mean you also wont be able to download previous purchases for said psp/psvita? Can someone clarify?
Enhancements?
No, the download list that is in your account options. You don't need to go into the store to access that master list. I do it for PSP all the time on the Vita, and that store has been closed for years now.The download list that is... in the store they are removing.
Correct.I mean more like DLC that you don't own. Guess now is the time to get it if you really want it.
Good to hear about patches.
So fuck the consumer who invested in the platform by buying digital games. Those customers who bought physical Vita cards will have years and years to play their games but the suckers who bought digitally are just SOL.Sony pulling access really comes to two reason (well 3 if you combine both):
1. Not worth the costs and hassle. Hardly anyone is buying Vita and PS3 games online, so can it. No different than any company shutting down a game's MP service because it's not worth running servers for the last 12 guys playing it on Earth
2. Move people to buying newer systems, newer games, and games now have lots of mtx. I dont know. Maybe Sony research shows there's too many people still playing old games forever and those oldies had hardly any mtx like nowadays
3. Both
Uh, no. You own a license to it. You can download as many times as you want. Can't you only download games from the library a certain amount of times before you have to purchase it again?
Does it still take an eternity to load areas? It has increased res (16x) and AF (now 16x) compared to the original release, not to mention how the boost in power means it hits 60 as opposed to the OGs struggle to hit 30.
My sources, which are just as good as TheGamer dot coms sources, have said that this story is not true.
SMH head at the chaos caused by one anonymous tip news story from some no-name website. I'll wait for Sony's official statement on it before I hit my panic button.
Yup. Only problem is...PS Now is hot garbage. And fuck streaming.
The overall response will be you got to move along with technology. And just because it's digital doesn't mean it can carry over to all devices even though it seems someone on a PC can still run legacy PC programs from the 90s due to its flexibility.I say again, there needs to be protections for consumers who buy digital, especially since the market is heading towards all digital.
