LTTP : The Order 1886

If the game was 10 - 12 hours long instead of 5 - 6 (of which most was cutscenes) and had a multiplayer mode with a decent progression system and a good set of modes and maps where people could enjoy the high quality gunplay then it would have done a lot better in my view.

The average playthrough time of 7-8 hours is a bit longer than that though; https://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=20067

It took me about 11 hours, which is close to the average time for completionists in the link above. The game got undeserved amount of negativity based on the rushed playthrough times.

Overall, I found the game satisfying, eventhough I didn't really like how the werewolf encounters were handled, or the QTE fights and stealth sections. The latter weren't that bad with the bow, but from what I've read some players missed that option in the garden. The lack of horror was the most disappointing thing about it. I expected more of it based on the trailers.

Give this game a sequel and push on the lore and fix what issues the first one had.

Feels such a waste to give up on this but keep pushing kill zone.

Picked it up awhile back for £25 and had a good time with it. Visuals are top notch and had a lot of fun with the environment kills, someone the ways you plough through people are brutal.

This franchise has the potential to be amazing, and have an evolution like from Uncharted 1 (which was mediocre) to Uncharted 2 (amazing). Even though The Order: 1886 is already much superior when compared to the first Uncharted.

They banked on the story carrying the game, except the story is the most basic, by the numbers, obvious and forgettable pile of tripe.

Unskippable cutscenes is an instant failure in my book, it's fine if you use them to hide loading screens like Uncharted but when they're done loading the game then we should get to skip them just like Uncharted.

Lady Igraine getting super jealous of Galahad possibly seeing another woman and being the reason she betrays him is some fucking weak, sexist and bullshit storytelling.

It doesn't fit her character and she had the flimsiest of evidence to go on, she didn't even confront Galahad to find out if she was right in her suspicions.

Knowing that she's hating on him for a giant misunderstanding is bad enough, the fact they planned to carry this over to the next game was worse.

If you're going to hang your entire game on it's story, make sure it's a little better than a direct to dvd, uninspired mess.

Also, never forget.

2015-01-1700_56_53-an8uick.png

That's actually not true. She does confront him. He blows her off. I don't think she was mad he was with another woman; I think she was mad he was cavorting with a "rebel."

Horrible game. How anyone could think the game has a competent story is beyond me.

Horrible pacing. 2 hours in and they kill off the old mentor character who had absolutely no development up to that point. I was laughing, why should I care about this guy? He was barely in the game. Also, for such a short game, having entire chapters that are just cutscenes is terrible.

Every character is one dimensional. Here's the young womanizer, here's the corrupt and questionable leader, here's the old mentor, here's the suspicious and bold main character. None of the characters (outside of the pc) have any development whatsoever.

Weapons are cool, but you barely get to use them, and they regularly take them away from you within minutes of getting them.

Encounters are bad. As someone else said, 99% of the enemies are humans, and the only supernatural enemies in the game (werewolves), are a nightmare to fight.

I actually just beat this the other night. I got it for $4, and, for that price, it was worth it. The story was solid, it looked gorgeous.

My issues were it's length and linearity. But for $4, I'm not disappointed. I'd play a sequel.

I paid full price when it released. Overall, I don't regret it. I get all the hate and I agree with most of it.

I do agree with others that I think some of it's a little over the top. Some folks act like it's the dumpster fire game of the gen so far. Is it a good game? In my opinion, yeah, but I understand not liking it. Is it a flat out terrible game? No.

At the very least it's a competent, functioning game. Pretty basic maybe, but it's a game. The games that get negative comments from me are the ones that don't work, or require patches in the first months of release because they don't work as advertised (or flat out don't work period, see MCC).

On a brighter note, here's what I liked/didn't like about the game.

Pros: The graphics are absolutely incredible hands down, the gunplay was weighty and sound effects were excellent, voice acting was great, the story (I enjoyed it personally), the setting

Cons: It is very short as others stated, not enough shooting sections, insta-fail stealth, enemies were generic and boring, werewolves were extremely underwhelming and for a game about werewolf hunters there isn't enough of them! The story reaching a climax and then boom - it just ends right when it gets the most interesting.

The greatest shame in the end is all of the squandered potential. I could dream for a sequel but it seems unlikely.

Found it disappointing vs potential but view it as average overall. Everything works in the sense there's damn few bugs, the shooting is solid, the QTEs dull but workable and do on.

It just failed to excel as I'd hope a game based on alt history Victorian supernatural creature hunters who are knights of the round table would. The concept - while sky high - is glorious and they clearly had the engine to do it justice but the execution gameplay wise and narrative wise is just so, so average to mediocre.

Galahad though undeniably has second best grunts after Tom Hardy. This needs more recognition.

Yeah, I'd label a game like Daylight, which stands at 48% on Metacritic, as shit. It was so unenjoyable to play, that I just had to give up and accept it as a lesson on how not to waste my money. Compared to a turd like that, The Order is a gem.

While the gameplay is it's biggest weakness, I have held on to this gem of a game. It's the first game with visuals that in some ways rival actual CG. I loved how the tech coupled with the art direction almost portrays a near photorealistic render.

I'm going through this right now for the first time, and thought I'd chime in.

First of all, the visuals are some of best - if the the very best - that I've ever seen. Such an amazing job and does an incredible job with detail and capturing the alternate history setting. I didn't expect to be as impressed, despite knowing the reception, but I'm stunned from a presentation standpoint. In some ways it out Naughty-Dog'd Naughty Dog. I don't like it as much as Uncharted, but the quality is undeniable, imo.

The gameplay and controls are fine, if not amazing, as well, but the actual gameplay sections were sometimes too sparse and interrupted too frequently for my tastes. I know it's a cinematic experience, but I found it hard to get a feel of flow because of the narrative-first leanings.

All-in-all, I like the game, but I don't love it. There is so much potential for something meatier to come out of that world and setting, though. I'd love to see a return with a little less "show" and a little more "do".

Anyone else having this problem with The Order?

https://streamable.com/6somy

Its driving me crazy. I cant track down the issue. I'm running it on my Pro, its not the Boost mode, the audio setup, the audio settings, the language (i have tried in english and spanish, same behaviour)..

As you can see some voices sounds normal and some voices sounds like they come from a cave 30 kilometers away.

So finally got around to finishing this game last night.
Really sucks that Ready At Dawn is getting shut down, this game really shows promise and could have had a great sequel.
I wasn't as impressed with the graphics now that I'm finishing it in 2024, and the black bars especially look weird when you play some of it on the Portal like I did.

I like this atmosphere, characters and lore more than Gears which is similar gameplay wise. The end basically being
one big gun fight followed by one longer QTE fight was a little disappointing. Also seemed like they were setting up something with the female knight at the end, just to have her not involved in the conclusion. Felt weird.

Was waiting for someone to bump something about this game since the RAD shutdown

Yeah that ending

Going full rogue/Batman with Tesla making all your gadgets in secret while finding out what the fuck is up with shady Lancelot. Standing on the roof at night, all tattered and torn staring at London, now under martial law. Some of the biggest gaming blueballs ever.

Damn, you have a good memory. I feel like I already forgot some of that and I beat it last night. I was drinking though . . .

I'm terrible at remembering video game stories in general.

My memory actually kinda sucks with most game stories too, but The Order is one of a small handful of exceptions because one, it was just so badass at the time and two, you knew already the chances for a sequel were slim to nil so it stung extra hard lol

Kind of insane. Still looks better than many modern games. Imagine what they could do with a PS5 Pro.
I just wish Sony came out with some Remake "Enhanced for the PS5 Pro" fuckery with RT and all that shit.
I wish they included some type of "Lost Volumes" chapters with more content connected to that ending, or even what happens right after.

Jesus fuck, even if it's more QTEs and cutscenes, I just wish the game was given a second opportunity and the proper ending it deserves.

I've wanted to play this for years and got it for crazy cheap a few months back. Maybe this October.

Why wait? If you know how to play cover shooters you can wipe it out in a session or two. Easy fun platinum as well!

People bitched about the length in 2015 and now it’s practically a fucking godsend with all of the bloated overlong shit out there.

This game better get proper 10th anniversary respect in February.

Anyone wanna speculate about theories related to the lore, story?

The black water are nanites, the werewolves and vampires are the result of genetic engineering, what gets remembered as King Arthur's Camelot was in fact a technologically advanced society that fell ala an Assassin's Creed type thing, which partly explains why the technology of 1886 is more advanced than in our timeline.

In fact, it may not be 1886 but a future world where the clock got reset, due to a disaster from the technology that gets interpreted as something supernatural, mankind was back to square one and has progressed back to the Victorian era, but slightly more advanced than the past timeline.

Maybe not in that second case, but I do think that's the deal with the seemingly supernatural stuff, Camelot was technologically advanced or at least some ancient society was and Camelot rediscovered it (the half breeds are implied to be around since ancient times iirc), this was what Arthur discovering the "holy grail" was, finding this lost technology.

Also "the old man" IS King Arthur, that much was pretty clear to me, the Order/knights of the round table became corrupted from within and Arthur was secretly helping the rebellion against what he originally founded, if the series had gone one that would be a big narrative crux was Galahad staying true to the ideals of the throne while helping to dismantle it's corrupt, colonialist system.

I always thought the hooded guy was Lancelot for some reason but yeah your theory makes more sense fo sho

Whatever was going to happen having Galahad stay in hiding while still investigating everything would’ve really been something. Tesla upgrading and building late 1800s Ratchet & Clank weapons for you is one thing, but what if you could do interrogations, investigate crime scenes after dark when authorities aren’t around…

Obviously Marquis would stay as your undercover bro in arms

It could’ve gone so many places

People have shit for taste after a point, there's no nicer way to put it, the only reason The Order wasn't a bigger hit is because after a point because taste and expectations for games get jacked up.

Probably a lot of stuff that's considered classic now would be looked down on if it came out 2017 and up, like Uncharted, there's zero reason Uncharted was a hit and The Order wasn't other than the cultural differences in attitude 2007 versus 2015 getting worse.

In fact I remember people years ago giving Uncharted a lot of flak for bullshit like "ludonarrative dissonance", people just got a really pissy attitude about "cinematic" games.

These two make so much more sense than anything I could've come up with. Man, I genuinely wish they'd come back for another round.

It's one of those games I think I'd really enjoy so I'm waiting for a weekend when my wife is out of town, so I can play it on the 65" Bravia OLED and enjoy it in 1 session. Maximum enjoyment.

One of the best games this gen, for me.

Pros:

- Epic cutscenes
- Fantastic gameplay
- Great story
- Great lore
- Incredible graphics
- Galahad is amazing
- Inventive weapons

Cons:

- Too short
- Final boss was meh

This.

It needed an extra year in the oven and the story explored more, the narrative had so so much potential and was being told in a very mature way, also the performances were incredible.

Its really a shame to see it die.

You're absolutely right. There was definitely a weird period back then where this was cold backlash against anything with cinematic action and a fair amount of walkin n' talkin. I don't know what exactly set it off. It could've been that we were already in a post Last of Us world and that that had arguably reset the bar. Anything that didn't hit those same highs was more than likely considered a failure. I put games like Ryse and Quantum Break in that pile as well, also released around the same period and killed over unnecessary overharsh criticism.

Shit man I remember when the GiantBomb guys finally got a chance to discuss it after reviews dropped. I was really hyped to hear what they had to say, and the whole discussion quickly devolved into the five second scene where you pick up the apple in the alley, look at it, then chuck it at the cop to cause a quick distraction. The entire discussion ended up just being about how stupid the scene was. Nothing about the lore, nothing about characters, nothing about what gunplay was there. Nothing about the aesthetic. It was treated like a heaping trash fire.

Giant bomb slowly devolved into pure sarcasm and any type of thoughtful discussion ceased to exist. And it started happening years before they were bought a 2nd time and Gerstmann fired. It's a shame cause for a few years there the content was so damn good, still is when I go back and rewatch or relisten to old episodes.

So who exactly owns the rights to this now that RAD is dissolved?

Sony? Meta? Or is it still in the remnants of RADs hands?

Best $8 i've ever spent. Great looking game, the re used bosses were super lame, I never had a problem with the stealth sections or the lenght. I felt it was like a super cool movie, always moving forward.

The Order has always been a Sony IP.

So the best shot at anything ever coming out of it in the future would be if PlayStation Productions decided to greenlit a film or TV show adaptation, which in turn would kick the gears into motion for a remaster and/or new game from PS Studios.

An extremely slim chance, but who knows really now that Ready At Dawn bosses Ru Weerasuriya and Andrea Pessino are out in the Californian wilds following their studio's demise. Dream scenario would be them joining Santa Monica Studio - former partners of them - and picking things up from where they left them, aiming at a cross-gen PS5/PS6 game sometime in 2029-2030.

This would be the best thing that could happen to The Order: 1886. An adaptation for a TV show would be amazing to say the least, the game already plays like a film with its emphasis on cinematics and all the details about the story seem like it could be interesting even to those non-gamers and much older folk alike.

If they greenlit fucking Twisted Metal, and apparently are even doing a Horizon one... I can't, for the life of me, understand what the fuck goes through the minds of the people at Sony... Somebody please do go break a couple windows at their HQ or something, Jesus...

I don't get why people slam a game for being "movie like" because for starters, a game like The Order can still be longer than any actual movie.

So a movie like experience with an interactive angle and longer length than a normal movie, what's supposed to be bad about making a game that way?
