CNN —
Former President Jimmy Carter, a Georgia peanut farmer who vowed to restore morality and truth to politics after an era of White House scandal and who redefined post-presidential service, died Sunday at the age of 100.

The Carter Center said the 39th president died in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family.

The White House has been notified that Carter has died, per a Biden administration official. Preparations for the state funeral have begun, according to a law enforcement official.

Carter had been in home hospice care since February 2023 after a series of short hospital stays.

People who stay together that long typically don't last more than a year after their other half dies once they hit their late 80s.

I guess you could call it a broken heart, but I suspect it's just their will to live has gone, and they don't have enough energy to last long enough to find another such will. Kids don't really count, as it's a given they will outlast you.

Rest in Grace former President Carter. You blessed the Earth with humility, honesty, dignity and dedication in service to others from a pinnacle of great power . Honoured to have been your neighbour. The heavens brighten with your spirit and may the world brighten from your example.

Good humanitarian terrible president.

He spearheaded habitat for humanity. I think most all of his policies were bad for the US.

But why??..

I thought he was calm and cool.
Carter's reputation is generally that he was a nice guy, with those criticising him typically saying he was ineffective rather than a terrible person like they might say about other Presidents. So in that episode of The Simpsons a statue of Carter is unveiled and the joke is that people would react that way to him.

I'm honestly surprised he lived this long. He looked really bad about a year ago. People didn't think he would live longer than a few weeks and he made it more than a year. RIP.

Absolutely! He was a product of the time. We just came out of the presidencies of Nixon and Johnson, and Vietnam was still weighing heavy on the Public's mind. Carter really didn't know what he was doing when it came to being the president, but that's what the people voted for after the corruption that had been running through the office.

I took my 8th grade students on a Washington DC trip in May and when we were at the National Cathedral, the guide told us that they were preparing for Carter's ceremony since he was entering Hospice and it was "only a matter of time." He still lasted more than 6 months from that point.

If nothing else, and not being American, he was the first US President I was aware of as a small kid.

...so he joins the now ever growing list of people I knew growing up, to die.

Happened with Johnny Cash too

RIP to Cartier. Worst president in history next to Biden. At least he broke the record for longest living.

This is remarkably classless. Gross.

R I.P. He wasn't a great president, but was undoubtedly a great person. Volunteered at his local VA constantly even in his late 90's. He truly cared, which is more than I can say for well over 90% of our presidents.

Yeah that was the thing. Really likable guy, just terrible at running the country.

The US had had it with people like Ford. And with Nixon's corruption exposing so much about the ugly inside of politics, the people wanted and arguably needed someone like Jimmy to brighten things up a bit, even though he was a bit of a bumblefuck.

He trusted the mullahs which led to the current situation in Iran and indeed the middle east.
The more I learn about his betrayal to the Iranians, the more I hate him. I hope the bastard experienced unimaginable suffering on his way out. Curse his soul.

Yes, which caused the situation rn in the middle east. Also had a lot of issues with facts in his books.
