VGC - Sony are working on at least a couple of old IP titles

So I had a hunch about this when he announced it, but if anyone knows who Hilltop is on the programming/translating scene, I think he might be working on one of these games. It lines up with his announcement that he is working on an official game.

Hilltop? Is Boku no Natsuyasumi really returning in that case? 🤔
I do remember this, though:

BTW, could you link to that announcement?

It was part of his Patreon and normally I wouldn't give a shit about that, but I respect his work so I don't want to copy paste the whole thing. The headline though is

HilltopWorks is working with a major Japanese publisher and an emulation studio to localize and re-release a Japan-only PS1 game.

They have such a big catalogue of old titles that would be welcomed back. Socom and Twisted metal seem like they would be Gaas titles if they returned. I’d have Arrowhead develop a socom game.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
With those classic games coming to PC, that should means people will have no need to emulate them and can acquire them legally

He does mention that they'd lean into the smaller side of things, so that rules out Killzone, Resistance, inFAMOUS, SOCOM, etc.

It'll probably have something to do with the rumored Gravity Rush 2 remaster, that Patapon remake that popped up at Sony's CES press conference last year or at most some cheap Twisted Metal product (maybe a 2012 remaster) to get out the door quickly in time for the second season of the show.

They might also want to bring back SingStar and Buzz as live-service platforms where to sell microtransactions.

If they do smaller (preferably developed in Japan) games like DDI or Yuunama, 1.5M units (that Astro sold in two months) would actually be fantastic.
Now, the people hoping for Killzone, Syphon Filter, Infamous, Resistance, or even Dragoon... that's just not going to happen.
I'm sure it's not hurting their bottom line, but I'm not gonna lie: They've just got done releasing a 700 dollar console. I don't think the majority of the user base is concerned about what deep cut niche of niche IP Sony expects to do a max of 3 million units.

They need to sort out their AAA stuff.

They're producing both DS2 and Yotei for this year. The former is releasing soon (100% before the summer), while the latter should not take that much after; independently of how you may feel about these titles, they're still heavy hitters that will make good use of the PS5 Pro.

Oh, I think everything was gearing up to this (especially the special DualSense pic), but this may just not be what Andy was referring to.
Though the idea of Sony working with him to make an English version of Bokunatsu 1 for PS Plus Premium is pretty cool so I hope it's actually that.

Disagree. There are parts of Ghost of Yotei that look last gen. Death Stranding 2 doesn't look that much better than Forbidden West despite using an updated Decima Engine and not being crossgen.

That's just visuals. Literally nothing shown or said about either of those games indicates a massive shift or enhancement in gameplay, systems, or design, which is even more egregious given how long each of these have been cooking for.

Also worth pointing out that Ghost and Death Stranding were on the lower half of the first party success PS had last gen. They will each sell millions and make some money, but they aren't going to reenergize the hype behind PS.

Killzone is not deep cut.
Where would you draw that line though? I'd say any of the Japan-only obscurities published throughout the PS1, PS2 and PSP eras has negative chances of ever coming back as anything other than Japan-only Classics re-releases on the PS Store, even some of the most well renowned titles in this category such Boku no Natsuyasumi or Doko Demo Issyo series.

On the other side of the spectrum we have IP that, while dormant, would certainly be too big of a deal if brought back to fit with VGC's description here. Series such as Killzone, Resistance, inFAMOUS, SOCOM, Syphon Filter, Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, even Ape Escape, I'd say.

But, would Wipeout, Twisted Metal, Colony Wars, Warhawk, Siren or Wild Arms qualify as "deep cut"? Or are those also too big of a deal?

What I certainly believe would fit the mold of deep cut properties capable of being brought back in a smaller-scale fashion would be stuff like SingStar, Buzz, Patapon, Tokyo Jungle (one of the very first modern roguelikes).

Anything that's not a high million seller series; Killzone sold at the very least 6M units, and that's only including outdated sales numbers for 1, 2 and 4; and it's by far one of the most remembered inactive SIE IPs looking at the reception to the announcement of the Helldivers 2 collab.
The Kinda Funny crew is full of PlayStation fans, they're not referring to stuff like SOCOM, Twisted Metal, Killzone, Resistance, Wipeout, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Ape Escape or Syphon Filter when talking about deep cuts ON TOP OF dead IPs.
Japanese IPs are pretty much the only option left when it comes to the perspective of a Western PlayStation fan (because Bokunatsu or DDI sure as hell aren't deep cut for Japanese PS fans, lol), a lot of them have way more chances to ever come back than shit like Fat Princess, Blasto or Kula World.
With all that said, yeah, it's probably Patapon (even if Don-Chaka got a PS4 remaster in 2020).

I am Become Bilbo Baggins
I'll take a remake of the Resistance trilogy.

I'd also take a reboot of this forgotten gem of a franchise..

SOCOM 2 REMASTER +
KILLZONE 4
LEGEND OF DRAGOON REMAKE

I would finally bite and buy a PlayStation this gen. Heck, I’ll even spend the money on the Pro, unless Sony releases a PS5 Super Slim…

Shit, throw Mark of Kri, Jak & Dexter and Sly Cooper in there, PLEASE!

I’d love that! Wreckfest is cool too but nothing touch Destruction Derby for me, must’ve played the first DD for 100s of hours, it was amazing at the time and very focused on what it was about.

And Wipeout too, but without going for speed of light so it’s unplayable and you just bounce between walls like every other similar racer.

Looked at the Sony franchise list posted earlier. Didn’t know Alundra was owned by Sony. That needs to come back! Probably my favorite Zelda-like.

I hope it's not just more remasters.
I would not mind if it is some remasters in preparation for a sequel. Games like Resistance could need a group of well done and reasonably priced remasters to make the case for a proper sequel. Maybe KZ2 could deserve a proper remake, but I would prefer a remastered collection including KZ3. Free these gems from PS3.

Same thing for games like ICO. Not available as emulated PS2 titles and the remaster that came out for PS3 is stuck there…

I'd like a non cucked Twisted Metal and a new Socom, both with single player campaigns and no microtransactions.

They’ve left it so long for many of these IP, and games take so long to make that by the time they release, the fans they made them for who will remember the IP’s will be in late 40s or early 50s. So I’m really not sure what the value is in using these old IP.

Lads why are game “journalists” like this, drop a title that’s coming, no one at all is going to know your source, Sony can’t NDA you. Just drop a single game title.

Single game title.

You know nothing.

I hate these people.

At this point I'd rather they not tarnish their old IP's lol. To be honest though if the quality was there I would very much like a new Imfamous game along with Killzone and most importantly a Warhawk mutliplayer game. Just remastering the old one would be perfect.
