Well, I didn't mean that it was only in the US that one need not ever speak to the police. Only that my statement was only good for the US, because I don't know how other countries work.
Oh, no worries. In Canada I think that in certain circumstances, you are 'supposed to' identify yourself to police and we don't *quite* have the equivalent of a 5th Amendment to my knowledge, if you are in fact guilty of something and are in court testifying or something of that nature.

One good example of how relaxed the attitude is, is that in my city there are peace officers (not quite police, not really security guards) for the train. The Peace Officer caught someone without a ticket (we don't have turnstiles that people need to pass through or can hop, we have an honor system, and officers will randomly check people and fine them if they don't have a ticket) and was going to write them a ticket.

To which, that person responded "I apologize sir, I'm drunk and I didn't feel that I should drive, so I took the train but I did not have any change with me to buy a ticket."

The Peace Officer didn't give that person a ticket, nor did they kick them off the train.

No one is ever obligated to speak to the police or "cooperate." About anything, ever.* Let that be a lesson for everybody, because everybody should know it.

* US only

Yeah. Regardless of the man's guilt in this instance, one should never speak to the police without legal counsel; especially when suspect of a crime. I can't blame the guy for wanting an experienced person around to help him with the reenactment. (asking " former-judge dad" is a lot easier than arranging a lawyer to sit in on it.)

He must have thought he was calling in to an "entertainment" radio show or something...WOW.
Seriously he must have thought he was on Rush Limbaugh or something. Don't you understand...... we have BLACK THUGS RUNNING AROUND. They are from the HOOD

How common is this kind of thinking in America? Is there any data on that?

Common. Even here in this very thread.. I learned that wearing a hoodie = RED ALERT.

If the guy really is innocent and it really was in self defence he has nothing to fear in going on trial for murder - and stating his case in a court of law. I don't get why people are saying "well he was a pretty tall kid" etc as if that means he doesn't even need to be arrested. Nothing else to say really.

One would think.

This guy is never going to go to trial for murder. Manslaughter is likely, but I just can't see how they would get him on a murder charge. This guy is a wannabe cop who screwed up big time and ended up shooting an innocent kid. He should be tried, he should face punishment, but so far I don't see murder.

How could it not be murder? He profiled and hunted down a kid with a gun.

You really think he went out wanting to kill the kid? He wanted to be a hero and catch the kid in a crime. I really don't see how he could ever be convicted of murder. It's not a defense of the guy, or trying to get him off the hook, I just don't see how they could prove that.

If all the recent robbers were young black males, then all young black males are robbers.

That's some great logic going on there.

I just can't anymore......sigh

I agree. I think there are going to be a lot of people disappointed with the outcome.

I agree that a murder charge will never stick due to a lack of evidence, and frankly we don't know. If he started panicking and pulled the gun and fired, it's manslaughter, if he was on top of Travyon and had control of the situation, then it's cold blooded murder.

Zimmerman does not come across someone who would cruelly murder a kid, but instead a moron who'd look for trouble and then couldn't handle a fight and shoot someone.

Yeah, that's true.

I'm just pissed that if he ever gets charged he won't be away for very long. :(

Is this usual police behavior? i.e. to reenact with a possible murderer? I only ask because I have no idea.

I know they did that with the Anders Breivik mass murderer in Norway. They took him out to the island where he shot all those kids and told him to show how he went through with the shooting.

I guess the point is to get a solid record of the crime.

To be fair, police officers here do give you a break every now and then. I haven't seen somebody get a free train ride though.

What they don't tell you is that the other robberies were missed because they figured the white robbers were just out for a jog, or fixing something for a friend. ;)
