RTTP: Overlord, and Overlord 2

Overlord was one of those franchises like Viking that cropped up early in the generation. It had a few issues as many games usually do with consoles early in their lifetimes, but the overall concept I thought was quite good, and have enjoyed both games in the series a great deal.

for those that came into the gen later, and maybe are not aware of what Overlord might be : Overlord is a fantasy hack and slash crossed with some lite rts elements in the form of minions that you control in packs. Players takes the role of a resurrected warrior known simply as The Overlord who has control over hordes of gremlin-like creatures known as "minions". The player must defeat seven corrupt ruling heroes in order to reconquer the lands and establish his lordship over its inhabitants. The game features a corruption feature, similar to that of the Fable games, but allowing the player to "be evil... or really evil,"where certain actions and choices affect different aspects of the story and gameplay. While the Overlord is controlled in a third person perspective, the way minions are controlled brings elements of real time strategy and upgrades bring those of role-playing games. The game also uses black humour and is often a satire and parody of the traditional fantasy setting and plot

Overlord was one of my early favorites of the gen, and I thought Codemasters had alot of really good ideas for the series. It had a few issues that hurt some peoples enjoyment of it, for instance the first game featured no in game mini map, the controls took some getting used to, and sometimes your minions would do things that you did not intend ( i kind of liked this though since they would do some very funny stuff).

This is another of those franchises that I wish could have lived on, as the sequel did improve quite a bit, but the humor could be alittle heavy handed at times and would sometimes feel abit forced, or flat as a result.

I loved the world though, and thought that the overall art direction was good, although I can understand why some might feel that the games premise would be better served with a darker world I felt that the art direction actually made for a good setup for the Overlord taking over and corrupting the world through domination. I also always found it pretty funny in most cases that the "Heroes" the Overlord was sent to destroy usually ended up not exactly being very "heroic" in their personality types.

I know Codemasters has basically become a racing only company for the most part, but i'd love to see a third game in the series at some point, maybe even in the next generation. I know thats mostly a pipedream now though, still we have the first two, and even with their issues they are alot of fun, and i'd recommend them because I know many never got into them because of late adoption of the current consoles, and because both games are super cheap now. I have not jumped back into the Multiplayer so I don't know what they looked like in terms of people playing.

I loved the first one. It had some good puzzles and dungeons, and the humor was decent; I particularly liked the minion chatter ("sheeeepieeeees"). The combat wasn't bad, but it was kind of loose feeling.

The bosses were big letdowns. Too one dimensional. They deviated too far from the command and multitasking that made the dungeons fun. Then you actually had to fight them a few times, too, which just wasn't very fun. Knockback on hits ugh. That desert boss that was more or less a game of pacman was awful.

The upgrade system was cool (sacrificing your minions to receive weapon and armor bonuses based on the color). Upgrading got a little too grindy but arena runs could take less than a minute so it was never too bad. The actual bonuses were good but investing in all the colors was worse than investing in just one, and maybe a few of another. Builds weren't very dynamic, but it's an interesting resource system I'd like to see further developed.

I liked the second one and it had a good number of improvements overall, but I never finished it. The tone of this one was definitely better; you were cruel or domineering instead of evil or good. I think beat the elven dungeon and then stopped. I was burned out from pumping too much time into the first one. But the minion mounts and spells were a cool additions.

Another sequel would be great. Maybe if Pikmin 3 and P-100 succeed it'll show there's a big enough audience for this type of game.

Awesome series. I liked the first one better, though I can't remember too much about both games. I had the impression the second one was much shorter, wasn't it?

I loved to roam through villages, destroying and plundering everything, and I always found it funny to guide the minions to a bunch of plunder and see them pick it up as armor and weapons.

The possibility to buy stylistic modifications for the tower was also nice.
And I chuckled heavily when I first saw the protagonist of the second game in the first level. A
Child Overlord
, ha.

Never got around to digging deep into the second game as I have the attention span of a gold fish, but I loved the first game. Would love a sequel or "reboot" (Not like the game needs one, but selling a sequel to a mildly popular game years later is difficult. Call it Overlord: Electric Boogaloo or whatever)

I would very much like to see a new Overlord, but a friend of mine works in finance for Codemasters, and they apparently won't be releasing another. However, a studio with a well-known French publisher, on the other hand, has the dstinct possibility...

According to rumour and hearsay, of course.

Although I would have preferred a few more customisation option, nothing comes close to seeing the treasure room slowly fill with overspilling chests of gold, and the relentless sound of: 'For yoooooooouuuu!'

Very fun games.

Man I fucking love the Overlord series. When I first got my Xbox and only had one or two games for it, I was downloading loads of demos just to have something to play and as soon as I finished the Overlord demo I went straight out, bought it and loved every minute of it.
The sequel went on to pretty much improve everything from the first game and the only disappointment I had with it is that the only DLC ever released for it was just an arena battle thing instead of an actual expansion like Raising Hell was with the original.
So the franchise is dead? I mean they did like five games after all.
It's kind of weird what they did with the Overlord series. After the first game and the DLC expansion for it, they made three other games: Overlord 2, Overlord Dark Legend for Wii and Overlord Minions for the DS. Then they brilliantly decided to release all those games on the same day. Even with my love for the series I only ended up getting Overlord 2 when it came out, because really why would you get three different games from the same series at the same time, and only ended up getting Dark Legend way later at bargain bin price because Overlord 2 already filled the need I had for that sort of game for a while. I can see what they were trying to do by getting an Overlord game to everyone who only owned one console on the same day, but they probably lost a great deal of sales to people like me who totally would have paid full price for multiple games but just not at the same time.
As the franchise, I'm not really sure if it's dead or not (though I hope not). These games were released in 2009 and I don't think they've said anything about an Overlord game since them, but I don't know if that's because the franchise is dead or because they released 3 games back then and are having a break.

I enjoyed Overlord 2 but it never manage to engage me enough to make me finish it, I got to the desert and stopped.

Nice games, but something was lost in ripping off Pikmin, which is weird because it does almost exactly the same thing in a dark medieval setting which is awesome, however it lacked something.

I just checked their twitter and some guy asked in dutch "When is Overlord 3 coming out?" and they replied

@TradeMark1991 Our next project is not announced yet - can't tell what it is just yet!

So I guess there is hope?

it would be awesome if this were actually true, I just remember a statement from codemasters awhile back basically saying that they had planned on focusing mostly on racing titles in the future. I'd love a third game in the series personally as I think there is alot that they could improve on further, and would love to see where they would take it.

So here is hoping that even if they don't push for it that someone else might if possible.

The first one was one of the best games I played last year (yes, last year). I have the second on Steam that I'll get around to one of these days.

I mean the developers could just jump ship right? Or does Codemasters actually own the IP?
