So yeah, I finally finished this piece of literature today. Was a very interesting read, never bored me. Especially loved the many characters and the way Herbert explained the universe of this book to me. Long enough to give me a good idea about the world, but not too long as in some other books I've read where it gets really boring.

The only thing that let me down was the ending. I expected a couple more pages, but it was just the appendices. I guess I was also disappointed that all the 'great villains' either died or bend the knee to Paul in the same room. And then it just ended with Jessica saying that she and Chani will be remembered as the true waifus or something like that. Expected more, so maybe I should buy the sequels

So, should I continue with this series and buy the sequels? I've heard mixed things about them, with some people saying you don't even need to read anything past the first book. I love the universe though, so I'd like to read more of it if it's decent. I'm even considering watching the David Lynch movie :P But most people say it's his worst movie.

wat do?

Read at least the next three books. After that... If you are into it keep going, otherwise you can stop.

Don't read the prequel stuff.

At least read Dune Messiah, then you can quit and still live in the glow. Sometimes we're not meant to see the promised land.

I'm about 50% done with the first book and loving it. I've heard conflicting reports on which sequels are good or not. Some people LOVE 2 and 3 and hate the rest..some LOVE 4 and 5 and hate the rest.

Pretty much. It's been a few years but I remember having difficulty getting over the huge change in Heretics of Dune.

And yeah, Brian Herbert & Kevin Anderson's additions to the series are EU/fanfiction bullshit that should be avoided.

Dune is a great read. Even forced one of my high school English teachers into including it on summer reading lists.

But maaaaan do the sequels get weird as fuck.

Bashar Miles Teg ftw,

Hey Teg, we're going to torture you to death deep on the heart of this inescapable spaceship and you definitely have no way out because you are unarmed and every odd that you could ever consider in this endless universe, is stacked against you.

I've read every Dune book, prequels included. All worth it.
I liked the prequels when I was a kid (very action packed), but now I find the Brian Herbert books to be pretty terrible, especially the two conclusion books her wrote. Going straight from Chapterhouse into the Brian Herbert followup was a DRAMATIC reduction in quality. The hero's escape impossible circumstances every other chapter, and they seem to exist mainly to tie into Brian Herbert own prequel trilogy than the original Frank Herbert ones. I know they said they found his father's notes on how the series was suppose to end, but I seriously doubt they are anywhere close.

I also tried to read one of the "interquel" books, but for D it to be terrible. Felt like a complete cash grab, the quality of writing is instantly noticeable as worse than Dune, and the story it was telling just didn't feel necessary.

I loved all the Frank Herbert books and would absolutely recommend all of them (Dune through Chapterhouse Dune). The story may not work for everyone, but I find that the writing stays fantastic throughout. It has honestly spoiled me for a lot of other science fiction, I just love his writing style.

i also finished dune just last night

and i agree about the ending, it kinda felt abrupt

i was hoping feyd-reutha would go on to be a nemesis in the later books

can really tell how it influenced stuff from star wars all the way to game of thrones

Wow man, that's actually exactly the same as me. I always read my book(s) right before I go to sleep :P

Looking at the posts above me, I should probably get 2, 3 and 4. (Dune Messiah, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune)

Didn't Brian Herbert force publishers to stop reprinting The Dune Encyclopedia because it clashed with his retcons? I remember reading something like that.

The prequels, I have to admit I read before Dune itself. They were okay, I guess, but I guess some of the effect is lost if you know things like
OMG DUNCAN IDAHO ESCAPING THE HARKONNEN CAN HE DO IT obviously since he is in every goddamn book afterwards
.

I kinda stopped like 4 chapters into the sequel books. Don't know if I'd want to keep going. I can only assume
the great evil is the evil machine Overmind who shot himself out before the humans nuked the shit out of Earth and is back with a vengeance and it's up to Idaho, child Teg and the rest of the crew to resurrect the entire Atreides line as the Avengers to fight them off or something stupid.

The Butlerian Jihad books were kinda far enough removed that I didn't mind, but they were more action-y than FH's Dune books.

The only thing I absolutely hated about BH/KJA's Dune books is they seemingly had to summarize what happened to someone just a few chapters ago, nearly every goddamn time as if we weren't able to remember right away, just for the sake of summarizing what happened the last time their chapter.

I thought that was stupid because it didn't actually retcon/contradict any of FH or BH/KJA's "notes" or what have you. I just took the Encyclopedia as a in-universe text and the information inside it could be wrong, propaganda or in-universe fan fiction for all it had.

What are the books int he series, and what are the ones worth reading? I have always been interested in Dune due to it having a very strong 70s sci fi touch.

In middlecschool I read the House x books and thought they were awesome. Didnt read the machine war books or the main series. Loved certain aspects of the original film.

You should read every single book that he and his son wrote. But read the prequel books before the last. That way you can hate a book so much that you will actually hate yourself for reading it.

I was really really disappointed with the big twists that his son put in
him shoehorning his own characters was such garbage

Did they
resurrect Leto and Jessica's first son that got blown up? haha I can't believe I fucking remember that

Dune is an incredible book. The sweeping scope it posses is marvelous, and it's kind of amazing just how much Herbert managed to hit on it.

Dune Messiah was very good as well, but it's also a completely different book from the original. Very worthwhile, though. I still need to finish up reading Children of Dune (which is yet another different book).

Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, and God Emperor of Dune are worth reading.

After that point, you need to be really into the universe to keep going.

Dune is one of the finest achievements in literature and one of my favorite books.

Can't wait for the next book by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson:

The Dunes of Dune

OK I got it! I won't buy any of the Brian Herbert/Anderson books.

I'm surprised at the hate, especially for that Anderson guy. Dude is supposed to be a best selling author and he's a hack? I should totally write a book myself. The Doge Chronicles or something, would sell millions.

I like you

Seriously read all the original books, if anything to be exposed to how fucking crazy herbert gets. Good ole magical pedophile space sluts.
