Nintendo Downloads - January 2014

Actual eShop devs confirmed this months ago. Ubisoft reduced the prices of their retail games multiple times, too (at least here in Europe).
Yes, I know . . . and I still don't buy it. I honestly think they are lying/stretching the truth or not giving all of the details in regards to Nintendo's influence in pricing. What other explanation can there be for old retail games like Darksiders 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum being $60 dollars only on the Wii U shop when they go for so much cheaper on every other digital platform out there.

Because they don't give a shit about the Wii U.

You know, it's a real shame the AC3 DLC hasn't been discounted yet. I'm almost done with the game (done pretty much everything on the map), so I wouldn't mind playing the DLC, but 10 per DLC is pretty expensive, especially when 10€was the price of the ful lgame a few weeks ago :p

Anyway, looking forward to the 34.99€ sale for AC4! :)

So, are we definitely getting Castlevania III at some point? I *really* want that for my 3DS.

In addition to III, I wonder if the other two Game Boy Castlevanias will show up. (Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge and Castlevania Legends) Not sure how well they're regarded.

I just want shop discounts. The fact that launch games which were ports of even older games are still $60 is ridiculous. Something like Darksiders 2 or Batman: Arkham City being $60 dollars is prohibitive. If those games were $20 or so for the eshop version Nintendo and 3rd party publishers would have a lot more of my dollars in their bank accounts. I know I've heard that Nintendo lets 3rd parties set their prices but I don't buy it. Why are they so willing to do sales on other platforms but do not want to do them on the platform of the of the platform holder who has a reputation for keeping their titles at full price for a long time. Too much of a coincidence for me. Nintendo definitely has some say in keeping the prices up.

Relax. It's just publishers not giving a shit.

I actually believe Ubisoft forgot it put AC3 and Splinter Cell DLC on WiiU. DLC has never been discounted even though the main games have.

Even if the Dev's are just not that interested, I still blame Nintendo. There are people in charge of the Eshop, in charge of discounts, why are these people not pushing/negotiating/creating sales. Look at Sony with the 14 for 14 sales. That wasn't a bunch of devs getting together to organize that. That was Sony organizing that. Nintendo needs to organize this stuff, push this stuff, create sales, push for permanent discounts. Make the shop a vibrant place. I'm always in the PSN store for one reason or another (getting my free PS+ games, taking advantage of free games because of the festive mobile giveaway, checking things out when they do those spend $50 get $10 back promotions, or just checking out their themed sales. Nintendo's shop is so static and the sales are so lame or far between that I don't feel the need to "window shop."

I just got a spotpass message telling me Link Between Worlds is available in the eShop.

Uh, thanks for the heads up, Nintendo.

There has been a big sale around Christmas. There has even been a "spend X get X back" promotion in the US last Summer. Then there is the always present Digital Deluxe/Premium promotion, there are sales on a regular basis. Thing is, with a very young library, they really can't do that much which is why the comparison against PSN which has a a ton of games going back seven years now is a little off.

But the full price of old games on the eshop is really pathetic. I dont know who is to blame, but darksiders 2 and need for speed U should be $10 on the eshop, not $60

We answered this question multiple times in this thread....
I think Darksiders 2 is also a special case since the publisher went bankrupt.

Wow, that was a rather quick update. I can't help to think it was probably just another "stability" update. Especially since it went from 7.1.0-14 to 7.1.0-15U.

Edit: Yup.

Improved system stability and usability:

Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.

Quick guys, what's the over/under on NA getting Mighty Final Fight? :)

I'd say there's a chance. It doesn't look like it ever came out on the Wii VC in Japan, so it's not a case of it being a VC game that was never ported over to the US. Fresh content, that's something, eh? (of course Wikipedia could be wrong or I may have overlooked it)

Looks like the 3DS VC title today is Life Force. Wonder if it'll hit Wii U soon, considering it was on the Wii VC.

Edit: Not much in today's update.

Virtual Console™ on Wii U™
Mighty Bomb Jack™ – The hero of the game, Jack, must make his way through 16 levels of a pyramid in order to defeat the demon Belzebut and rescue the royal Pamera family. Navigate through action zones and Royal Palace rooms, discovering treasure chests along the way that hold money bags and useful power-ups.

Virtual Console on Nintendo 3DS™
Life Force – Blast your way through six stages of intense action, alternating between horizontal- and vertical-scrolling environments, and take on wave after wave of enemies. You can go at it alone, or invite a friend to assist in the challenge. Do you have what it takes to save your planet from the monstrous Zelos?

Wii Fit U
Free Trial Offer Ends Jan. 31 – There's just one week left to take advantage of the Wii Fit™ U Free Trial Offer. Users who own a Wii U console and a Wii Balance Board™ accessory can download Wii Fit U from the Nintendo eShop on Wii U for free, then keep it forever by syncing a Fit Meter accessory to the game. The Fit Meter can be purchased separately at a suggested retail price of just $19.99. Wii Fit U offers more than 70 activities, while the Fit Meter tracks activity levels on the go.

Nintendo eShop Sales
Shin Megami Tensei®IV – Let ATLUS treat you to another sale in 2014. Shin Megami Tensei IV is $29.99 from Jan. 27 until Feb. 3 in the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS.

Fractured Soul – Fractured Soul takes the classic platformers of the '80s and doubles the action, with game play across both screens of the Nintendo 3DS system. Since its release, Fractured Soul has won the hearts of critics around the world. Starting today, download Fractured Soul from the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS for $5.99 until 9 a.m. PT on Feb. 6.

Ugh.

How is Life Force? Never heard of it before, but it looks pretty good for a NES shooter.

edit: IGN reviewed the Wii release in 2009 and gave it a 9/10

Life Force is awesome, its like a HR Giger version of Gradius where you fly through the innards of giant aliens.
has one of the best soundtracks for any NES game imo, this is my fav track

I really thought we might be getting PokéBank. Why would South Korea have more priority than NA/EU/AU?

Since they worry about it heavily increasing traffic, I'd guess they wouldn't want to release it in too many big regions at the same time.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
So... What are the recommended third party VC titles?

I've got Castlevania I and II as my only third party VC titles.

WiiU or 3DS? For WiiU:

Mega Man X (or Mega Man 2)
Harvest Moon
Contra III
Super Street Fighter II (or Turbo)
Spelunker (maybe that's just me)

is what I'd recommend.

I really wish one of these days, Konami would just release a huge shmup collection. I should have imported those Salamander & Parodius Collections on PSP, especially considering some aren't available for download on VC or PSN.

Well now we know that next week is Yumi's Odd Odyssey right?
Ah, right, that was suppose to be out this month. Sure hope so, or at the very least, we get an actual release date (& price) before the end of the month.

Lucas M. Thomas did that review and it's well deserved as it's a great shmup and has an excellent two player simultaneous co-op mode which is not common for the Gradus series (Gradius V is the only other game in the series to feature 2P simultaneous co-op)

I'd get it but I already have the Wii VC version and would rather do $1 upgrade than spend another $5 for 3DS. NOA's timing of titles and missed opportunities for sales for similar titles continue to be terrible.

When is ATLUS going to make the retail price of SMT4 $30? I've given up on being disappointed when I miss getting it for $30 b/c I know it'll be on sale again within weeks

We have full control over our prices. Plus, MANY games have gone on sale and reduced in price, in both eShops. Heck, even Ubisoft has had some sales for their games. Capcom too.

Ah, damn. Well, I can reuse some of those. My recommendations:

Mega Man II (the NES one)
Pinball: Revenge of the Gator
Gargoyle's Quest
Prince of Persia (though I don't know how good the GBC version of that is)
Ninja Gaiden
Spelunker
Recca (if you like shmups, get this!)
Super C
Shinobi
Sonic
Defenders of Oasis

and even if they're technically not VC, don't forget about the Sega 3D Classics.

Good recommendations. I'm going to emphasize the Sega 3D Classics because they're awesome. Get Shinobi 3 even if you don't have any interest in "retro" gaming because it holds up wonderfully.

Also, Super C is in the Contra 4 DS cart, and everyone with an interest in Contra and a DS/3DS should try Contra 4. It's awesome. (And sprite-based games survive the DS-->3DS thing better.)

Ah, nice, didn't know that. I still have to import Contra 4 someday.

My dad and I played this for countless hours when I was around 3-4 years old. It will always hold a special place in my heart for that reason. It is an excellent game besides that and worth checking out.
