2014: Year of the RPG?

I usually don't like making declarations saying something is going to be the "year of this," but just look at what RPGs are slated to come out in 2014:

The Witcher 3
Dark Souls II (probably)
Dragon Age III (probably. Can't be worse than DA2 right?)
Project Eternity
Another Bethesda game (possibly)
Versus XIII (lol)
X
Torment: Tides of Numenera

I'll add anything that I'm missing.
 
I would not rule out a new Elder Scrolls in 2014.
Or maybe Fallout 4 in 2014 and Elder Scrolls - Hammerfell in 2015.
 
well, not much announced right now for 2014, I think you listed them all. there are a lot of possibilities though!

Versus XIII duh.
Persona 5!!!
another Deus Ex.
 
Hopefully we hear something about Fallout 4. Dying for another Fallout.

Don't forget about 2013, though. Shadowrun Returns and Wasteland 2! Kickstarter is a beautiful thing.

I hope we can get a confirmation for FFvsXIII at least by the end of the year.

Would be nice to see Kingdom Hearts 3 as well.

This blows my mind. I get that everyone is different and all that, but man, Tales of looks like shit. That Xilia gameplay video I saw today was pretty unbearable.

I still play them, but how anyone can actually say it's better than any FF game I will never know.
 
They aren't confirmed, but since not much currently is I'll throw SMTIV, Bravely Default, DQVIIr and SMT x FE as candidates for localization next year (though some may make it this year or not at all).

A handful of Kickstarter projects are likely as well.
 
Knowing how Bioware is going Dragon Age III is probably going to be so dumbed down it can't even be classified as an RPG.

Throw some always online on top of that since, 'some of the attacks have to be calculated by the server.'
 
List also needs Torment.

But yeah, next year will be amazing FOR WRPGs.

If Witcher 3, Eternity, and Torment reach their potential...
 
i remember when people used to look forward to good games like persona 3 and tales of the abyss

then people started having to hype shitty ports/remakes of 10 year old games on the ds like chrono trigger and the final fantasy remakes

now look at this thread. this is pathetic holy shit. soon enough people will be starting threads for hentai rpgs because there's nothing else in the genre to play

We're just three months into 2013 and there's already a handful of games that are quite a bit more exciting than "shitty ports/remakes." It's not really all that damning.
 
If Project Eternity, Torment, and The Witcher 3 all come out in 2014 it'll be the best year for wRPG's in probably a decade.

Not sure what's going on, and it's starting to worry me.

We already got Fire Emblem, Ni no Kuni and Etrian Odyssey 4 with Soul Hackers, Toki Towa, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Tales of Xilia, Rune Factory, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Valhalla Knights 3, Neptunia Victory and Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen all coming this year.

While i am not really sure on Western side, i am kinda sure that there are surely some rpg coming this year too.

If we're to get Trails in the Sky SC in a remotely sensible time frame I guess 2014 WOULD be it, so I guess with those games it'd be the year of the RPG afterall. Though it's probably more like the year of the non-AAA RPG: Witcher 3 comes closest, and CD Projekt Red isn't anywhere near the size of the likes of EA or Zenimax.

Hell, if we don't see SMTIV this year it'd undoubtedly come that year, and Dark Souls seems likely too.
 
2014 seems indeed to be a good year. If Versus and Torment 2 will be released on top - I think my head will explode due to so much awesomeness! After 2012 being a total bummer when it comes to games, I'm really looking forward to it.

Funny how it can't even be mentioned in a list of 2013 RPGs. This site can be so groupthink-ish it's scary. Toki Towa deserves a nod though? Unreal lol.
 
Year of the RPG is whenever the mythical unicorn that is FF7 Remake comes out.
It could be the only RPG of the year and it would be the year of the RPG still.

Smedley made a statement a couple of months ago that they scrapped the original work as it was on its way to become a super polished but traditional mmo. They wanted something more deserving of the franchise pedigree and they are creating a sandbox mmo unlike any other apparently (and they were well over a year into this new development). I'm expecting reveal this year.

I would think its obvious....they are saving it for E3 where they will debute the game on PS4.

I wish. Im actually curious how well mmos will do on the new hardware, I remember the guild wars 2 guys where considering a console version at one point, and there are a ton of great free to play mmos out there these days.

It's such an untapped market on consoles, Dc Universe was doing really well when it launched, but then all of the problems hit and it dropped off heavily until it went free to play. I would be all for some really great mmos on consoles.
