I'm sad there's no Pushing Daisies in best comedy series. Also, 30 Rock dominated the guest actor / actress categories with 7 out of 10 nominees! (One of which was Will Arnett)

Yep, but where the frak was Dean Winters, Mathew Broderick and David Schwimmer? They were better than Rip Torn, Tim Conway and Steve Buscemi, but got completely snubbed.

30 Rock led with a ridiculous 17 nominations, followed by Mad Men at 16 and Pushing Daisies at 12 (Without a comedy series nomination, which is definitely also my biggest disappointment of the awards. Entourage? Screw you, Academy.)

Doesn't matter, Will Arnett will win it! (Edie Falco probably will win it too)

The real big news: a whopping four nominations for The Colbert Report! WILL HE FINALLY BE ABLE TO GET ONE, AFTER BEING HUMILIATED BY BARRY MANILOW AND TONY BENNETT? EPIC! Well, kudos to him at least.

There's no old singers on the list, so this is his best shot yet - however, Don Rickles IS old, that will be a tough sell.

Slightly sad, though - Colbert's duets with Manilow/Bennett after the Emmy's were always nice. Unless he has a duet with Letterman or Fey, which would also be nice. I'll even take a Stewart/Colbert duet.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Nice to see Breaking Bad and Bryan Cranston get some nominations, but it should have received a nod for Outstanding Drama over the second season of Dexter (huge disappointment) or Boston Legal (yet again).

Can't believe 30 Rock got so many nominations (I guess because it's the only decent comedy on TV). I didn't like the second season nearly as much as the first.

Yeah, Fey has FOUR nominations, so I expect she'll get her Emmy in a different category (Mainly Lead Actress Comedy).

And for those interested, I've put together a giant 2000 word analysis of the various shows and nominations at my blog. It covers a lot of the snubs and things, and as a special bonus for NeoGAF includes heaps of my much-loved Entourage hate!

No Battlestar Galactica noms... even though they were pushing hard for it.

The Best Drama on TV gets snubbed again in its final season.

Well, the first half of it - everyone will be eligible again next year since they're delaying the rest of the fourth season. That'll actually be Bear McCreary's best chance, as his work in "Revelations" was after the end of the elgibility period and that huge orchestral masterpiece will be in contention next year.

And agreed about his snub this year, but I was glad to at least see Giacchino there.

So I guess The Wire wasn't a primetime show...because there's no reason Boston Legal should be there over The Wire as Best Drama.

Actually it has 6 noms, all technical. With a nomination for writing, which to me is more important than a majority of the categories listed in the OP. Still, it should have like 12 more nominations.

I added writing to the OP - I only hadn't because it was fasted to take the categories I'd already edited down than the ones that required a bit more work.

And indeed - BSG has plenty of noms, although they did lose their directing spot they had last year so it's a bit of a step back.

"Flight of the Conchords" DEFINITELY should have been nominated over "Entrouage" for best comedy series.

edit: Also "Two and a Half Men." I think the show is funny, but "Flight" is SO much better.

Considering the last season of Entourage, yeah. They did get two best song nominations at least.

I hope Mad Men takes the best drama award. Other than that the category is pretty weak. No Wire or Battlestar? Oh well, it's like this every year I suppose.

Dexter and Damages are good but not worthy of a Best Drama award, IMO. Never cared for House or Boston Legal and the thought that Lost is the best drama on television is pretty much what :lol was invented for.

Woo hoo Mad Men and Damages.

I kinda hope Damages wins something prominent. Even if I don't quite think it deserves big wins, I really wish more people would check it out. Mad Men seems to be hooking more and more people now that the sets are out, but Damages still gets no love.

*snore*

Mary McDonnell being snubbed is ridiculous and there are NO WORDS for their ignoring Bear McCreary for a nom.

At least i can take solace in BSG getting a writing nom and Lost being snubbed in that category. :)

Go Dexter! I've only seen 2 episodes of Mad Men, but i could see myself rooting for that.

i'm reading the full list.

Imaginationland got an emmy nod! :lol

how did Wilson not get nominated for House? He showed that his character was integral and acted the hell out of the back half of the season. ugh.

John Adams-- 23 nomiation. GOD DAMN RIGHT!

oh my god, how did Scrubs get nominated for the episode "My Princess"? That episode SUCKED ASS and cinematography was nothing special either.

Emmy stunners and snubs.

The cable revolution entered its final and most dramatic stages on Thursday when AMC's "Mad Men" and FX's "Damages" became the first basic cable programs in history to get best series Emmy nominations. Each series also landed their respective lead actors - Jon Hamm and Glenn Close - in best actor categories and "Mad Men" went on to garner an astounding 16 nominations, leading all dramas. NBC's "30 Rock" led all comedies with 17 nominations.

The cable onslaught continued with other surprising nominations as well, when the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences named four of the six lead actor nominees from the cable side - Hamm, Bryan Cranston for AMC's "Breaking Bad," Michael C. Hall for Showtime's "Dexter" and Gabriel Byrne for HBO's "In Treatment." In addition, three of the five women nominated for best dramatic actress were also from the cable side - Close for "Damages," Kyra Sedgwick for "The Closer" and Holly Hunter for "Saving Grace," both from TNT.

The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards will air Sunday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

While handicapping Emmy nominations is always dicey - but fun - a bigger and more depressing tradition is to note the snubs. Easily the biggest disappointment - continuing a five season trend - is the near criminal exclusion of the best series on television, "The Wire." The acclaimed series finally got a writing nod this year, in its final season, but to be shut out (yet again) of the best drama category and all the acting categories is just surrealy absurd.

And yet, that's the Emmys in a nutshell. The same people who see fit to continuously nominate "Boston Legal" in a multitude of categories can't bring themselves to right the injustice of four previously egregious oversights on "The Wire."

On the plus side, every year sees the Emmy voters getting in step with both critical trends and emerging series. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences noted that "of the 51 nominations for comedy and drama programs as well as lead and supporting performers, 21 were not included among last years' nominees - a 40 percent change." That's certainly a testament to newfound freshness in the Emmys but new doesn’t always mean correct.

Staying positive, however, the "Mad Men" haul - while not completely unexpected given the massive critical acclaim - is nonetheless surprising in that Emmy voters seemed to take notice immediately, rather than two or three seasons into it, which is a refreshing trend. It's hard to overstate how important these basic cable nominations are, breaking into the hallowed ground of best drama. At best, an acclaimed basic cable series would be lucky to get one of its actors nominated in a major category. But to shunt aside far more popular broadcast network fare is a real achievement.

Though "Mad Men" will get all the attention in these nominations, two other series are the real stunners here. "Damages," while acclaimed, wasn’t anywhere near as prevalent in the TV zeitgeist as "Mad Men." It got seven nominations - as many as "Lost" - including Ted Danson and Zeljko Ivanek in the supporting actor categories (where "Lost" and "Mad Men" landed only one nominee, Michael Emerson and John Slattery respectively).

Maybe the most stunning inclusion in all of the Emmys is Bryan Cranston's best actor nod for his role in AMC's "Breaking Bad." Cranston was fantastic as Walt White, the science teacher turned meth maker in the creatively daring series (it received a total of four nominations, which is equally surprising since it was barely on anyone's radar.) While it's easy to target the missteps made by Emmy voters, they deserve credit for more inclusion this year, particularly in the cable ranks. And though there are the nominations that seem rote - all things "Boston Legal," "Two and A Half Men" - there's a dramatic reduction in the rubber-stamping of previous nominees that had been the worst trait of lazy Emmy voters. It's almost unimaginable to consider that "Mad Men," "Damages" and "Dexter" cracked the best drama category (with a very deserving nod to "Lost," a predictable one to "House" and a ridiculous one to "Boston Legal"). The lead actor category is particularly inspiring, but so is Close, Sedgwick and Hunter - the strong female characters of a certain age on cable - joining Emmy favorite Mariska Hargitay ("Law & Order") and Sally Field ("Brothers & Sisters") in the category.

It was also nice to see the Emmy voters add Lee Pace of ABC's "Pushing Daisies" to a strong field of lead actors in a comedy, which included Tony Shalhoub for USA's "Monk," Steve Carell for NBC's "The Office," Charlie Sheen for CBS's "Two and A Half Men" and Alec Baldwin for NBC's "30 Rock."

Pace's co-star, Kristin Chenoweth, also was nominated in the supporting actress in a comedy category. Their inclusion should take away some of the concern that strike-shortened freshman series would not only be ignored but completely forgotten (a good sign since so much of this coming season's series fit that bill).

If you ignore the perennial snub of "The Wire" - which, let's be honest, wasn't entirely unexpected - this may go down as one of the more inclusive and smart years in recent Emmy history. They can't fix the damage done by ignoring the best drama that may have ever graced a TV screen, but neither did they cover themselves in total disgrace by rubber-stamping trite dramas like "Grey’s Anatomy" or a multitude of popular series that are well past their prime. "Mad Men" and "Damages" and "Breaking Bad" are niche cable series with a limited audience. To honor their creative achievement with both series and actor nominations is proof that the Emmy voters are getting it right more often these days - a continuing and welcome trend.

Hmm, before I saw season 2 of Dexter, I wanted House to win for best drama. But the 2nd season of Dexter was all kinds of greatness. Go, Dexter!

agreed. there were no nominations for The Wire except for writing.

Wow, an SNL acting nod. That's rare.

I like Amy Poehler too, good for her.

And the Wire has always been largley ignored by the Emmys, which sucks.
God knows they jerk off every other HBO series.

I also have to add Connie Britton not even making the top 10 supporting actress nominees (she really should have been lead =/), let alone being in the eventual final nominees is a total sham. She was an absolute effing powerhouse this year and i am NOT hyperbolizing. Screw those Grey's Anatomy bitches!

Reality show host? Thats got to be new.

And why wasnt Prison Break nominated for best category?
