All-new PlayStation Plus game lineup: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Demon’s Souls, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, NBA 2K22, and more join the service

That's what it seems like their purpose is, at least partially: drive attention to games to increase their sales potential.

However I can see it being used in other ways, like limited pre-launch game trails for new AAA releases as extra perks.

I have to agree with this part.

This one might be more subjective, though. It really comes down to what you want. I am personally more partial to the library Sony's service is providing, but there are others who really want those MS games Day 1 in a sub service.

That said, it's fair to say MS have failed at living up to the promise of consistent Day 1 releases into GP, which is supposed to be its big appeal. Comparatively Sony looks to be delivering on everything they've promised with their revamp, and at a lesser cost too (if you buy a year's worth). So in some ways you can objectively compare both services.
PS5 DE + PlayStation Plus is looking ridiculously more attractive than the Series S + Gamepass if the person only cares about subscriptions.

Seems like it, this is a pretty big deal for me as i have been buying digital since 2010ish

Yeah I wasn't expecting that, either. Pretty considerate of them tbh, I remember a lot of people were saying they'd make you re-buy those games again.

Considering the outlook of GP releases for the rest of the year, and the obvious differences between PS5 DE (need that Disc model myself, personally) and Series S, I'd have to concur. Especially when you also consider stuff like PS+ Collection in the mix, too.

Particularly great value for those who had PS Now before the revamp was announced.

Meanwhile in the opposite dimension:

"Hey Xbros, that thing you were happy about for the last 2 years .... turns out it was pretty cool. I now see that you guys had a point and also enjoy something very similar now. Let's be friends"
I don't care about it, I already had Gamepass for most of the time and I always notice I don't play much in it, I rather play the games I buy. I pay for PS+ already for the multiplayer anyway and I have most of the games they are giving but the value is clearly there if you are all about digital games and waiting.

Sony had subscription services and PSnow for over 10 damn years. This is nothing new what they’re doing. They even made it a point to mention exactly this when the announced the PSnow and PSplus combining.
Hmm, having Miles Morales, Returnal and Demon’s Souls on a subscription service is quite new for Sony. Let’s not pretend they’re not following some or the gamepass footsteps. They are.

Anyway......

I’ve noticed some of the games listed for PS3 are already on PSnow. Is the PSnow catalogue going away and games on PSlus are a complete reset? Or are the PSnow game will be there on psplus? Seems strange to list games that’s already there.

Stop bringing gamepass into this. Has nothing to do with anything.

I mean, they are taking some cues, but doing so where it makes sense for them as a business (and some would argue, makes sense in general). There's no reason to cut into your software sales by dropping them into a service Day 1 if they're AAA games, but putting them in there a year or two down the line makes a lot of sense as the bulk of sales would have already occurred.

Saw Tekken 2 in the classics.

I remembered that for the longest time, they wouldn't release Tekken 3 on PS1 Classics on PS3 because of... Gon? But with them having released Tekken 3 on the standalone PlayStation Classic, does that mean that Tekken 3 will come to this service? 🤔

I hope so. Tekken 3 and Tekken 5: DR are my two favorite Tekken games, easily. What I REALLY want tho are more enhancements for retro games. I need online multiplayer for Tekken 3 and Tekken 5!

The Ps4/5 games are on the mid and upper tier
The retro stuff (ps1-3 + psp) is only on the upper tier..

Standard Ps+ will continue working as usual. Same price, same features, 2-4 free games every month but no access to these expanded libraries.
Thanks for clearing that up. Maybe I'm just tired but couldn't really figure it out. Lol

Tbh I don't think the line-up is worth paying the extra bucks for the mid-tier.
Not for the hardcore gamers anyway, who most likely already own the vast majority of the games or the games worth buying.

But for the average gamer it's probably a good deal.

PS Now is being rolled into PS+. PS Now won't exist anymore.

The classics selection is beyond pathetic
It's not the entire list, just "some" to give an example. They mention the full list will come out when it launches in your region.
looking at the ps3 list its all stuff that is on ps now right now.
Cause it's the same thing, just a rebrand and streamlined into one service branding.

It doesn’t matter what’s new or old. The point they already have a subscription game service for 10 years. But ohhhhh they’ve added a more recent game! That means following MS! Ok? No.

Sony had recent and new games on ps plus and ps now way before gamepass.

You may not consider it to be top tier but within the space of a month last year Gamepass subscribers got both FH5 and Halo Infinite. That's the direction they need to go.

Those are two mediocre games released since the Xsex launch - about 18 months. And the next first party games are due … ?

Since MS aren’t releasing any games now, the day one promise is hollow and they don’t seem to be putting their full back catalog on it either. On top of that there hasn’t been a solid third party game on it for ages (well except the Show which Sony make but that was an annual release).

In fact I wonder if MS is deliberately holding this stuff back until the $1 GP subs expire because they know people won’t renew…

Anyway, in this one announcement PS has more first party content on its sub service, the titles are good if not great - Ghost of Tsushima and Returnal for example - both GOTY contenders.

Not sure why MS couldn’t manage to match this after this much time of GP - hopefully this wakes them up because GP has been dormant for months. MS need to dip deeper into their pockets and get third party major releases on GP while they’re waiting for their first party to get something out.

That is also technically true; they got the new VF5 in PS+ last summer IIRC. Also more recently than that, Shadow Warrior 3. I'm sure there are other examples even older than those, too (aside from Oddworld: Soulstorm).

Is that the whole list of classic games?

No; they'll reveal more soon.

Has anyone seen ps now working on the steamdeck?

With it being discontinued, has anyone even cared to try 🤣?

I currently have PS Plus and was somehow given PS Now for free since March (?)
My question is will I get Ghost Of Tsushima Director's Cut for free under the new PS plus or it is only for the Extra/Premium subs? thanks!

They are retiring PS Now, and not many people knew about PS Now and its catalogue anyway (3.5 million PS Now subscribers vs. 48 million PS+ subscribers), so from a marketing POV, it makes sense to announce those games as if the reader doesn't know and not bank on the possibility that the reader might know about the PS Now catalogue.

In Brazil we don't have yet PS3 games (I doubt if we will ever have it tbf) I will gladly subscribe to the Extra tier. Loads of game I haven't played yet.
PS5 digital edition is a huge deal right now.

What is the limit for those games?
Is that the whole list of classic games?
Guys, read...
We’re focused on adding high quality titles into the PlayStation Plus service for players to enjoy. I’m pleased to share a selection of the content that will be available for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium/Deluxe plans. PlayStation.com will be updated with the game list when it launches in your region.
Additionally, some remastered classics from previous console generations will be added to the PlayStation Plus Premium/Deluxe plan. Below is an early look at a selection of games that will be available.
Didn't they mention roughly 700 games in total?
It will have what PSNow has, now. With some of the additions they mentioned.

The full list isn't out yet.

There are a lot of PSNow games being removed next month, lots of Konami and Sega stuff. So saying that now wouldn't be true when this launches.

Makes sense I guess and better be the case.

If something like TLOU2 was on PS Plus we would know about it. That would be a massive one for them. It would be on that blog title and everything right next to Ghost of Tsushima
When the remake was leaked, it was said that the original pitch was to bundle it with the PS5 version of TLOU2. We also were told that more DC are coming. So unless were talking about Bloodborne or Knack, pretty likely a TLOU1+2DC is coming.

They also have the tv show and MP game coming, and will add more games to PS+ every month. So they could use one of these news to add it later to PS+. Specially knowing it's still selling makes sense they don't want to include it there.

Guess there's no trophys on the ps1, psp classics else they would have said?
Since they are crossbuy with PSP and Vita, seems they are the same ones there with no addition. Other than non-game specific emulator level improvements that apply to all games like resolution and framerate upscale, rewind etc.

For those of you above not sure about game selection of the new PS Plus tiers vs PS Now, it goes like this:

1. PS Essentials = PS Plus

2. PS Extra = PS Plus and PS4/PS5 sub games

3. PS Premium = PS Plus and PS4/PS5 sub games and PS1-PS3 legacy catalog of sub games, includes PC streaming

So for anyone wanting to play PS1-PS3 games like PS Now, you got to sub the top tier plan.
