Almost all CollegeHumor, Dropout, Drawfee and Dorkly employees lost their jobs today

Apparently IAC, the parent of CollegeHumor, Dropout, Dorkly, Drawfee (and also Vimeo, match.com and Tinder) made a decision not to finance these comedy portals anymore.

I was so sad about this news, as I am a avid fans of collegehumor sketches from like 2012, I hope everyone there landed on another great job.

here's the source of the news:

some of the casts also updated their twitter bio and wrote some twits about this layoffs

That's a shame, I still remember when their videos were good, I still remember their real life Final Fantasy sketch that spoofed FFVIII, I think. The last few years though, they've been all about woke comedy that is frankly not very funny and went all in into absurdist humour, which is just tiring when everything is either absurd or woke (fuck Katie though, the most unfunny person in that channel). I still liked Dorkly's videogame sketches though, too bad for the guy making them.

I kept wondering if youtube paid enough to have that huge office (and apparently it was offices, plural), plus their own streaming service, plus their huge production team, makeup artists, etc, etc. I guess it didn't.

They have declined HARD in recent years, so can't say I'm too sad about it. Their best stuff was everything up to 2011/2012.

And also they started Adam Connovers career and with it Adam Ruins Everything. Started some of the worst conversations I had in my life by people that got their *correct* opinions from that show while actually knowing shit about the subject matter.

I can't remember when was the last time I watched one of their videos. It just felt like the quality just nosedived off the cliff. They were good in their early years. Some of my favourites were Blowjob girl (starring Ellie Kemper) and the POV series.

I think a lot of what it came down to was them just being young college graduates doing whatever came to mind and just writing sketches. It wasn't overly professional, it wasn't too political, it was just having fun. Leading to some very funny and creative sketches.

Then the 2010's happened, comedy was ruined and wokeness overtook.

D20 is great and Brennan Lee Mulligan is an outstanding DM. Hopefully they can all land on their feet and maybe continue D20 with a smaller budget.

If you're a fan of old CH, HeadGum (owned by Jake and Amir + a guy named Marty) has some familiar content.
Unfortunately few actually feature Jake or Amir, but the stars would fit in remarkably well with the old CH cast. Much better than the more recent CH skits.

I'm not sure what platforms content makers have anymore. It seems youtube has even been difficult for people as of recent.

the problem with their new videos is that their budgets get cutted down by IAC, resulted from years of declining profitability, you could see this from how they use many different backgrounds and actors in the past, nowadays it's mainly just sketches in their offices. This issue arise when Facebook tried to convince them to move from youtube to facebook by inflating the views metric, you could read more about that on this former CH staff twitter thread:

so facebook is partly to blame for their declining quality of content thus this layoff.

The decline in quality is also evident in how simpler in concept 90% of their video's became with every semi-decent idea being ridden to death. They somehow became WORSE than buzzfeed. (That may be a bit over the top, but they're not far apart anymore.)

Another thing I miss is the music parodies they did back in the day, (Which got worse over time before completly stopping)

The constant get woke, go broke thing makes you wonder just how popular the woke shit is, even with the woke. I sincerely doubt if most woke people actually hold the opinions they espouse.

Yeah the music parodies were really fun early on.

Oh please. When has Facebook ever been known for pre-recorded video? They got greedy and Facebook merked them

This also doesn't explain the huge decline in viewership numbers. That isn't Facebook. That is unappealing contebt

It's not really about popularity. it's more of a virtue signal. They need to portray having the right opinions/mindset to further their careers

Why do you have to "pivot" from YT to FB? Just upload on both

Bullshit. Facebook was making plays to get creators off of youtube. They were also caught lying (giving false view data), affecting MANY people, but only got a slap on the wrist that wasn't anywhere near the damages they caused.

Man the "If google was a guy" videos were so damn good. A shame we will never have a new one.
Now that the other social media platforms have become giants in their own rights, you can totally extend that concept more. What if Amazon /Reddit /Facebook /Instagram was a guy.

Surprised they were even still around.

I stopped watching Dorky after the end of Megaman Dies at the End and I haven’t watched CollegeHumor since the days of We Didn’t Start the Flame War.

It’s just that the concepts of “lol video games amirite” and “lol internet amirite” get boring after a while.

The last videos that went semi-viral for them were the CEO videos.

Probably exclusivity contracts etc. If that was a case you use an actual decent lawyer and don't sign a contract where there isn't a clause to monetarily rape the platform in the case of the metric being falsified/wrong (as they were here).

I honestly don't remember ever watching anything by them. THAT BEING SAID I hope they find a job soon. NOBODY deserves unemployment.

Another classic

Basically go to their Youtube channel, sort by oldest and you're entertained for hours. Then stop when the original cast is nearly replaced.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I think they were pushing DropOut TV, but it wasn't interesting.

And 2 seconds of talking to any real person who have told you that Facebook's metrics were bullshit. YouTube is the center of online user-uploaded video.

I'm supposed to feel sorry for then becuase no one bothered to do any fucking research? Sit down

This was during a push Facebook was doing to siphon active viewers from youtube. They were actively courting groups away from Youtube and hosting on their own sites. Facebook's userbase is very large with an active userbase. The metrics being a lie were a shock to mostly everyone. The victim's had no way of knowing that Facebook had been lying to them.

Research? The only metrics available were from Facebook, which again were a lie.

Were they also being paid for the inflated views?

This is just not true. People in the webdev community were immediately calling out Facebook, for pushing numbers that were clearly untrue. Facebook videos were hitting "billions" in hours?

A company can't do the basic due diligence of investigating potential partners?

You don't need metrics from Facebook. Simply measuring the date uploaded and the number of supposed viewers(which is always an old number) would have revealed FB was promising numbers that were impossible considering the amount of high speed internet out there.

What's far more likely is they stopped producing content like, and the centralization of online media (which would have happened regardless of Facebook) squeezed them out. They were no longer popular, so they were no longer shared. No more viral hits.
