Apple confirms iPod "Special Event" on September 5th

Well, my Wi-Fi won't work for some reason.

It won't detect the router using DHCP (but that's a problem with all my Wi-Fi devices it seems with my router...), but when I set it up using Static - like I have done with ALL of my Wi-Fi devices (PS3, downstairs PC, etc), it will not connect to the net. It connects to the Wi-Fi just fine, but my iPod doesn't even show up on my Active Users List - whereas my PS3 does via Wi-Fi.

It gives this error everytime: "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server."

The iPod is connected to Wi-Fi because the 3 Wi-Fi bars show up, but it won't connect to the net.

Any ideas?

Ah!

Got it to work. Just had to forget the damn network and redo it all.

Editing from my iPod so awesome

You probably just need to select the entire Album in iTunes, do a Get Info on it, and check the "Part of a Compilation" box (under Info). That should fix it.

you'll have it as one album when sorting your library by "album". when sorting by "artist" (that's what I'm doing), you'll see it numerous times in coverflow...

Crap, I think my 4G 40GB iPod has finally kicked the bucket...160GB classic users, how do you like it so far and are there any issues about it I should be aware of?

I've had my 160GB Classic for about a week, and so far it's great. I'd say performance with Coverflow is a bit slow still, but otherwise, it's a great device. Battery life is awesome, sound quality is great, and the storage. My god man, the storage! ;) I'm going to rip my entire DVD collection to the darn thing for the next time I travel. :D

ok, anyone bought any cases/sleeves for their touches yet? any good recommendations?

and, this is probably a dumb question. i HATE iTunes. is there any other programs i can sue to transfer files to the touch? the new winamp supposedly supports portables, but it doesnt detect the touch.

oh my god. who thought to put metal that scratches if you so much as blow air on it on the back of something like an iPod? My classic is already getting scuffed and the cases are exorbitant. I'm thinking of just doing a sock or something.

I've had my 160GB for about a month now, and though the initial two firmwares were rocky as fuck, things are better now. Coverflow is still pretty broken, IMHO, but it's entirely optional, and if you were content browsing your music on the 4G, that method still works fine here.

Interface could be a bit snappier, it's still laggy at times, but it's way better than the 1.0 software I suffered through for the first week or two. I love it.

Do all you niggas use VisualHub to get shit onto your Phone/Touch? It looks pimp, but paying $23 for a video converting program isn't my style. Am I forced to do it?

Well atleast hes not flaunting his homosexuality now.

We now have to deal with his rascism :lol

I want a way to sync wirelessly for the pc, surely thats possible right?

My jailbroken touch is great. The only time its locked up is when i tried cancelling the sending of a song to someones email (sendsong app).

New question. Hehe AWWWWW THANX U GUYS.

I really want my videos to really pop on my Touch. I converted a DVD via Handbrake last night, and it looks great, but some fast moving scenes do look a little janky. Any tips on how to use this software more appropriately? Google, Wikipedia and whatever else aren't providing clear answers.

There is a good chance that has nothing to do with how it was encoded and everything to do with the LCD screen. Not uncommon at all.

Do you guys recommend an iPod Touch for viewing series like The Office and Heroes, and some anime ?

I'm looking forward for the 8GB version, the 16GB one is a bit too expensive.

Is the iPod classic an option for viewing series?

The screens are obviously better on the Touch/iPhone, but the if you can get over the smaller size of the Classic, it's perfectly good for watching video. And of course, the expanded capacity allows you to store a lot more video than the flash based Touch/iPhone.

So I decide to buy a Touch, i need one before Wednesday because I'm gonna make a little trip to London. And it's out of stock everywhere around here (Belgium-Europe)

:(

It's a sign, Hold off on the touch!

So I just got an 80 GB iPod Classic, and I had a couple of questions about putting some DVDs onto my iPod.

I ripped the DVD onto my hard drive using DVD Decrypter, and now I'm trying to use SUPER to convert the file to mp4/h.264.

The problem is that I have no idea about what settings to use for the Video and Audio. Here's what the menu looks like:

super01.png

I'm not sure where to start. Is 320:240 good, or should I use another size? What Frame/sec should I use? Etc.

Also, I wanted to just convert the movie portion of the DVD to my iPod and not any of the bonus features or anything like that. Is there any easy way to do this, or do I have to put the entire DVD's contents onto the iPod?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I'd really appreciate it if someone could lend out some help for this. :)

Question for all the Canadians out there...

Should I go with the IPhone or the Ipod Touch?

I'm currently on Telus with a Razr (LOL) and have a scratched as hell, low life battery IPOD Nano.

So take into factor -> changing phone plan, cost, etc.

Thanks.

For sure, it's a very convenient device for that. It even comes with a tiny stand that you'll find helpful for this purpose. I actually really like that small stand, as simple and dumb as it may seem at first.

Still, I have to say the screen is not as good as that on PSP. Not just because of size, but also the quality of actual LCD is not quite there. It has a lot more of that typical LCD glowy-ness than PSP screen does, but on the other hand, it doesn't have the ghosting.

How do you plan to get Iphone? Unlocked? Isn't that expensive as hell?

In any case Iphone has a lot of advantages, but Ipod Touch has one big advantage in that it's a *lot* thinner. Really, that device is a miracle of packaging IMO.

Ipod Touch users rejoice.

If you're like me and have been wanting a goddamn case for the thing for some while, Griffin has come out with some here. I may check out the Reflect Case, it looks kickass.

Not only that, but jailbreaking your iPod just became 20x easier; http://www.tuaw.com/2007/10/29/instant-jailbreak-for-iphone-and-ipod-touch/

Tuaw.com said:
To use it, open Safari and point your browser to jailbreakme.com (which we aren't linking to so folks won't install this by accident, but you are prompted to confirm). Once there, read the directions, scroll to the bottom, and tap Install AppSnapp. If Safari disappears and you return to the main Home screen, you're good. Just wait a minute more for your unit to restart--don't touch anything until you see the slide to unlock screen. If Safari hangs, just quit out (press and hold Home for 4-8 seconds) and try again.

Once you get to slide-to-unlock, go ahead and unlock your iPhone or iPod touch. You'll return to your home screen which will contain a new Installer.app icon. If you'll want to ssh into your unit, install the BSD subsystem, Community Sources, and then install Open SSH--you may need to upgrade Installer.app (thanks Ste). With Open SSH and sshfs (part of Mac Fuse), you can open Finder windows that offer direct drag and drop access to your phone or touch.

The jailbreak really is as easy as it sounds. I restored my iPod touch and jailbroke it just a few minutes ago and it worked great.

Ive just been using the silk sleeve that came with a pair of sunglasses. It does the job for now, until i find something that isnt too bulky.

Is there a way to play the iPod through my laptop (Dell D830) without installing iTunes? It has a line in/mic jack, but no sound plays. Do I need a separate application?

check to make sure it's unmuted through the sound control... it should work with a direct line

Hmm...already checked that. It's weird, when I insert the cable into the jack on the laptop, a pop-up box appears asking me what function I want for the jack: mic, line-in, or nothing. It should be working. :(

how do you use that stand exactly?
and...i ordered the reflective case from griffin. it aint out yet though. currently i'm using a microfiber case that came with a pair of sunglasses as well. the case situations with ipods is just fucked...

Check the audio cable? Make sure there isn't anything wrong with it perhaps? It's certainly not an issue with the iPod. Something on your laptop it would appear.

Just checked the cable on my desktop and it worked, so it's not the cable. It's not the iPod either, so it's definitely my laptop. I get this option:

untitled.jpg

...but the symbol on the side of the laptop only shows a mic symbol, and the only options in the bios refer to a mic. Looks like the line-in option isn't supported (unless I'm just missing something). Well, at least my docking station has a line-in, so I'll just use that at work.

Thanks for the help anyway, guys!

Anyone have 3rd gen Nano? When I go to the Podcasts directly and press play while highlighting a podcast feed, it doesn't work. It shows playing "1 of 0" which is impossible of course. When I choose the individual podcast, it works.

Why do you want to play your iPod through your laptop? Don't most laptop speakers pretty much blow?
Mainly for at work when it's in the docking station, which has a pretty nice set of speakers attached. I just figured that there would be a line-in on the laptop itself and not just on the docking station (my old laptop had a line-in). Not too big of a deal though, just not as convenient as I would've liked.

Yeah.. Use Videora. That guide is so helpful (click the updated guides I guess). Don't use Super (I used it for a while, the website and program screams spyware), Videora can convert like every file type to mp4 now.

Edit: After seeing all the applications that the iPod touch can now run is getting me so excited to buy one. NES emulator? If anyone has it, is it responsive (is this kind of talk allowed here?) as I hope?

ok, odd...i dont think i got anything like that. i have a white...docking kinda thingie, which definitely wont let the touch stand. it goes on the base, and has a hole for the usb connector.

so hay guys...where can i download some nice wallpapers for this thing?

didn't know there was a stand in the box. Been holding it on flights which is quite annoying. Will have to look.

remote buddy looks awesome. might get me to buy a mini

I have 2 1/2 series of scrubs on my touch (in wasteful but fast encoding MPEG4) and still lots of space left. If you stick to smaller resolutions you can fit plenty of video on the 16GB touch.

if you're in belgium then the flight isn't long to London so why not just buy one from the regent street Apple store? get the full experience

Oh, I know. I've got several full length movies, ripped from DVD's on my iPhone, not to mention some video podcasts, plenty of music, and still have more than half my storge capacity left.

On the other hand, on my 160GB Classic I can rip my entire DVD collection, and music, and still have room left. :D

How is Jailbreak for iPod Touch? I'm considering getting one today but want to use Apps like mail and such. Remember, I'm in Canada.

Also, how does it work with firmware 1.1.2?

1.1.2 is already jailbroken. Didn't take long at all obviously. Works about the same as on the iPhone from what I can tell.

Oh man! I can't wait for this SPECIAL EVENT on the 5th of September!

What are they going to announce?! A new iPod shirt where the music player IS the shirt! Twist the nipples for the click-wheel and push in the belly button for play!

Holy shit I can't wait until Sept. 5th!

Can't this thread title be changed to "Official iPod Discussion Thread" or something?
