Apple Watch Series 1&2 |OT| Better, Wetter

Bizarre. Are timers working for you? Alarms set in the same day?

After a power cycle on both devices it now says "setting the alarm" endlessly and nothing happens. I can ask it for other stuff and it works fine, like when the next game of the NBA Finals is.

Point of clarification: I'm asking it to set an alarm when the alarm for that time already exists, it's just switched off. Could that be what's tripping it up?

Huh, you're right. I just made a new alarm tomorrow at 8am, then turned it off, and tried to have Siri create an alarm at 8am tomorrow and it didn't do anything. I assume it is because the alarm already exists. You can say "turn on my alarm for 8 am" and that works.

There it is! What a strange bug. Thanks for checking on your end, I really appreciate it.

For those with the sport watch, what does your glass look like these days? Bought my series 1 in Oct and the glass was holding up super well, but today I noticed 3 scratches on the Watch face that I can feel with my finger nails.

I kind of have a feeling I know where they came from, but disappointed in it none the less. Just curious what others have going on.

Well yeah, I've always assumed the Sport/aluminium Watch's glass' durability would be similar to Gorilla Glass on iPhones. Maybe it's slightly harder, but I don't know if there's actually a different between "Ion-X" and Gorilla Glass or if it's just the same thing. Not surprised it'd collect scratches after some time.

I had an original space black stainless and now S2 Nike...I managed to destroy them both. Both got damaged during indoor rock climbing, but how it happened and manifested was different.

With the original space black (i.e. sapphire screen) the only damage to the surface itself was a really faint scratch or two, like I basically had to look for it to see it. The space black DLC surface got trashed though, as a result of using my wrist instead of hands/fingers on a hold and (audibly) grinding the watch against the wall. But otherwise everything was fine with the screen, no cracks or anything despite going through quite a bit of abuse. Then one day, like months later, it developed this dead spot problem, which eventually grew to cover about the top half the screen. Touch still worked, but not seeing a lot of stuff was a bit of a problem.

With the S2 in a little over a month I scratched the screen pretty quickly, but whatever, nothing too major that I really cared about. Then I hit the face against the wall or something, at the time I remember hearing it but not being too concerned cause I felt like I've done that before with the (technically more brittle) sapphire screen. When I got back down I saw a crack through the middle of the screen...which I was fine with really, up until I noticed most of the screen wasn't responding to touch. Got it replaced with AppleCare+ (which I didn't get for the first watch) and ordered one of those damn watch cases on Amazon for the next time I climb. I'm not sure how much it'll help when pressed against the wall but should be better than nothing, didn't seem to be any perfect case for my usage unfortunately.

I wonder if any of the new software update changes for the Watch announced today will be withheld from the Series 1. I still can't believe they won't allow me to use the dial to slowly turn on the screen in a movie theater and only allow that feature for Series 2 watches.

What were the main things announced? I saw the watch faces and heard about a now playing complication

I could see the Siri face being held back - even if the processing is done on the phone.

Now playing complication has no excuse to not be in series 1. Plus it's one of my most wanted features. If I could I would permanently set the crown to be a volume control and play/pause remote when clicked. I never use time travel and rarely need the app grid

So i probably won't be using any of the fitness tracker stuff on the apple watch as i'm a lazy fuck, is it worth it if I won't be using those features. I kinda want a Series 1 Watch ... :/

I don't own a watch so it could be useful ...

I have a Series one, and I use the Fitness stuff four times a week for 2+ hours. The rest of the week I use the watch for all of the typical smart watch stuff.

So, even someone that uses that stuff frequently isn't using it more than all the other features. I love the watch!

Honeycomb main menu can be disabled.
Megaton!

also vertical dock. Yay that it's vertical but it doesn't show as much now?

Now Playing is available in the Siri (Proactive) watch face. iirc Kevin said developers could add third party data sources? Any way, I'll switch that Siri complication (what's the point of that anyway when you can the hardware button to launch) to my weather/rain alert and use this Proactive watch face as my default -- assuming the Now Playing works well of course:

Other features barely visible during the livestream:

(keypad in phone watch app, finally).

So is there a Podcast watch app or not?! They redesigned the iOS app, HomePod will include Siri(?) Podcast support, and of course Now Playing complications etc should work with Podcast... that might make me switch to the iOS podcast even without a watch app. But considering the Music watch app now has background autosync for playlists, think what they could do with a good Podcast watch app... *sigh*

Anyway some long overdue UX improvements in watchOS 4. Maybe they'll finally reach where I expected watchOS 1 to be in watchOS 5 lol

NB: If you install the watchOS4 beta you can't downgrade without sending your watch to an Apple Store. Never worth it imo

Thanks for posting the 'other features' pic, was hunting around for it earlier and couldn't find it!

I like the new adherence to verticality, I'm convinced everybody in the world scrolls the wrong way in the dock when using the Crown on a regular basis.
Having the Siri face's vertical list leading into a vertical dock or vertical app list will add some much needed cohesion.
The new Workout and Music apps scroll vertically too...
I wonder if the crown will let you scroll through Faces now...?

The Proactive face is seeming like everything I never knew I wanted for the Watch.
Really looking forward to trying it out.
Third-party data sources are a must, if I get WaterMinder and Dark Sky alerts mingled in there I'll barely need to launch another app again.

I'm dying to try this beta out but my fitness streak is way to precious to me to put at any sort of risk. Eagerly awaiting impressions from any of you brave souls though :)

Wow that's awesome.

So far, what is the word on WatchOS4 ? Are people pleased ?
They only showed so much. The Siri face has a lot of potential, and music controls (or was it now playing?) in the workout app fixes one of my biggest annoyances while exercising with headphones (course part of that is cause AirPods don't have a skip track function...or didn't until iOS 11, so my biggest gripe with them is fixed too).

Otherwise I'm meh on the other two faces they showed (a third party kit for that or something more customizable with photo faces is sorely needed)...and can't think of much more we know right now other than the gym equipment stuff (more Bluetooth access) and optional list view of apps and vertical dock. Oh and apparently there's a Now Playing complication.

Everything else will have to be through hands on or the watchOS presentations today, and a lot of that will be dev focused in terms of what's new for them. Depending on examples they do it might be a case of being able to think of what's possible with new OS 4 apps rather than what it'll be by itself. Besides general performance (which they do mention in the description) I'm hoping for better complications, like more timely and/or essentially unlimited updating and actionable stuff without leaving the watch face (like it'd be awesome if you could just have Now Playing audio controls right on the face). And I guess notifications...somehow, just cause those two areas are the most used parts.

Well one more thing would be adding a scribble button to dictation/Siri screens and using scribble to edit them, like on iOS where you can fix stuff with the keyboard.

Honeycomb may not be the best, but a huge list to scroll doesn't seem ideal either.

Change that into list + pages for some 2D movement I guess.

(Hell, straight up 9 or 12 icon grid pages wouldn't be a bad idea either 👀).

I think Complications are a dead end if the Siri Watch Face becomes popular (especially if Apple opens it up to third party sources).

Text input for Watch Siri is a good idea but Scribble is too slow. If only Apple would make a swiping keyboard...

Please can you hunt down the Whatsapp and Twitter developer contingents and demand they offer functioning watch apps

How many apps do you have? Most alphabetical list launchers also include a shortcut/quick scroll to jump to any letter. Apple could stick that option under a force touch but that menu is already reserved for switching back to the honeycomb launcher :/. Personally I love alphabetical launchers and would even prefer that on iOS as well

I'm sticking with honeycomb. Looks better and more apps on screen so I can open faster.

it's not faster

I have a lot, although I don't use a lot, truth be said.

Currently I organise them into an X. Makes it a bit more manageable.

there's also a new option to set the Dock to show Recent apps (instead of picking a preset list). I might never actually end up using the homescreen/app list

The honeycomb menu is not an inherently bad design; the act of organizing the apps is. It's a fucking struggle to get an app exactly where you want it. They should really be working on that in addition to giving an alphabetical list.

On the dev side of things, well I skimmed around and fell asleep, but one thing I saw was about app performance. Before they had separate Watch/app extension and UI processes, while in OS 4 they're combined automatically, I think they mentioned up to 2x performance increase. I forget if it's automatically like that in the OS or recompiled at the store level, but it's a free change, i.e. devs don't have to do anything. There was some hullabaloo about requiring a lower level submission format way back for Watch apps, stuff like this is possible cause of that change.

Someone on Reddit mentioned faster speed, that must be contributing

And yes, it's recommended that iOS apps are submitted as bitcode but it's required that Watch apps are, so Apple can recompile on their side for major changes. This is a benefit of that

Some of those are crazy good, I’m really excited

Wow you're not kidding.

Love the flashlight (wish the iPhone had a display flashlight option)
Love the music syncing improvements
Love they added HIIT to workouts
Repeat timers
Lots of other QoL improvements

I wonder if there will be new hardware this year. Otherwise maybe I'll jump from my 0 to a Series 2 in the Fall.

I've made a real effort to begin using the Calendar this week and have added everything I can think of to it.
I'm doing this in anticipation of the Siri face, so mine will be populated and look nice :lol

I love the idea of it, that sort of pro-active AI is the future of interaction for all devices and will undoubtedly be how the iPhone's home screen looks in a couple of years.

Based on how useful complications have been this week (I've actually only just used the Modular face for the first time!) I can see me loving the Siri face.

Best thing, cross posting from the WWDC thread:
The fact that this now pops up whenever you play sounds (in this case Spotify and Audible):

...Makes WatchOS 4 just the best thing ever.

Should have been there from the start.

Turning the Digital Crown adjusts the volume, nice touch.

I heard that the Watch music app can no longer control the music app on your phone, is this true? That it will ONLY play what's on the Watch?

I don't use Apple Music. But this is iPhone controls without launching anything so it doesn't matter, does it?

So I got the series 1 Apple Watch today and I don't know how I feel about it. I'm right in thinking that I have 14 days to return for a full refund if I decide i don't like it right? I'm probably going to give it a week before making that decision.

I heard that the Watch music app can no longer control the music app on your phone, is this true? That it will ONLY play what’s on the Watch?

Watched the 9to5Mac video on WatchOS features and they said if music is playing on the phone, the now playing controls automatically pop up on the Watch so I have to assume you can still control music on the phone via the Watch.

I heard that the Watch music app can no longer control the music app on your phone, is this true? That it will ONLY play what’s on the Watch?

You can't... but I actually don't mind this.
I find now I only play music stored on my Watch (which updates whenever I charge) and it's annoying how the source automatically defaults to phone.
I have to re-switch it to watch and then reconnect headphones every single day, so I was hoping they'd fix this.
It's a dramatic way of fixing it admittedly but any less reliance on the phone is a plus, you'll notice this change and a lot of the others are all in aid of the Watch becoming it's own device and less a phone accessory / remote / whatever.
Paving the way for the day the Watch gets cellular capabilities and becomes independent no doubt.

To clarify (and make my post make sense) the Now Playing app will allow you to control any music already playing from an iPhone.
The Music app however now won't let you see any music on your phone, so you can't begin playing anything.
The only music you can access directly from the Watch is music already saved to the Watch. Currently you can see everything your phone has but this changes in 4.
