Astro Bot is currently the highest ranked PS Studios game in Opencritic history

What? The only negative thing you could say about them is that they are a minions ripoff. But they are still super cute and very good mascots. Who else do you want as a mascot? Knack? Steroid Abby? Dad of War? Miss charisma Aloy? Indiana Drake?

You say "no shit sherlock", yet you're the only person I've seen here who actually agrees with what I'm saying and sees the rationale in it.

Everyone else has made it seem like I'm some unhinged troll by making (what I believe to be) a pretty obvious observation about the current AAA games climate, and how it's affecting the review aggregates of good, quality games.

Good/great games that've released this generation are getting better aggregate scores than they would have if they released last generation.
The other people called you a troll, because you felt the need to unnecessarily point out the obvious and this makes you look like you want to downplay the game. Imagine you win a gold medal and someone says "Gratulations, but with the injured X and the retired Y you wouldn't have won". You want to hear that? In my country we call that poisoned praise.

And people are seeing this as PS celebration rather than an eye opener letter to studio execs like Mark Carney. It is a love letter to gamers but not to the sony bosses. These fuckers closed Japan Studio, there should not be an easy forgiveness to that.
Not to go off topic too much, but you don't know what Mark 'Cerny' does do you?

To be honest this game deserves it. This just off about an hour and a half playing it. They took what made Astro's Playroom fun and dialed it up a hundred fold. I really wish I had today off cause I'd stay up all night playing it but instead I have to go to bed soon.

You keep saying that the things I'm saying are "obvious" to everyone but I can tell you from my experience in the Astro Bot review thread - they are not obvious to anyone lol.

I'm not trying to downplay AstroBot, it looks like a great game, just as the previous games were.

I'm moreso just trying to point out a (what I believed to be pretty obvious) trend in review scores this gen. I don't think it's a good trend but like I said, it's a side-effect of the current climate.

It's not just affecting Sony either, it's affecting all "good" games. It's why Elden Ring with its 96 metascore towers over anything FromSoft has ever made, including their magnum opus darling BloodBorne with its relatively paltry 92 metascore.

It's why TOTK somehow managed to get a nearly identical metascore as BOTW, despite being a rehashed, iterative-as-fuck sequel without the same level of the freshness, newness and originality that BOTW had.

Gaming is so down-bad the last 5 years (as is everything else) that when something halfway good does come along, it hits like absolute fucking crack to these review outlets.

If Batman Arkham Knight came out today, it would get a 90 or 91 metascore e a s i l y.
In 2015 though? Prime PS4 era with amazing games releasing nearly every month? Meh, 87.

Every now and then the industry needs a pallet cleanser. For me it was after playing Last of Us 2, I played Luigi's Mansion 3 next and it was an amazing game, one of my favourites. Sometimes timing is just right, the gaming world needs a hero from all this darkness and poltics. Astrobot is innocent childish pure smiling bliss. I hope it sells well.

People really just get on the internet and just lie like rugs, huh?

You're entitled to not liking any game you play, but call a spade a spade.

The ultra-hand abilities, the engineering aspect, the connectedness of the surface and the depths.

The effing dragons!

Just don't lie about it breh.

TOTK seems like a game that should've released 3 years after BOTW. Mayyyybe 4 years and that's pushing it.

Not 6.

Same map, same graphics. Lottta re-used assets. The "new car smell" wasn't present like it was for BOTW. It's all very familiar. That's the nature of iterative sequels. I ain't lying about anything, breh.

Guy is fake prop, taking credit for Japanese engineering ingenuity. Master Architect my ass, generations my ass. He is like Tim Cook. Nothing original. He is one of the reasons Naughty dogs is shoving remasters and Playstation is producing stuff like Concord, all these European modern audience's believers have collectively purged the idea of 'fun'. So fuck them, fuck them all. I am recently playing old Playstation games on emulation, every game feels like a slap on my face. I didn't image them being better they are fucking miles better, light years better. Now when I play I feel like I am doing chores or fucking walking cinematically. Returnal, Stellar Blade, Astrobot are keeping Playstation afloat....so fuck Mark 'Carney' director cut generations.....He betrayed generations

Man I hope this sells gangbusters. Then Sony execs can look at this on the one hand, Concord and their other GAAS shit on the other, and see what their customers actually want.

But I know they won't stop chasing the golden GAAS goose, if just one such project hits it really big it will make them more money than any SP game ever can. But is it worth the huge bombs like Concord, which I guess has already erased all the profits this game will make?

Errrr, show me the receipts for any of that (actually, don't, it's too off topic, but you do know Mark Cerny is just a consultant don't you?)

Why do you think he decides which games Sony studios should make? I know he assists on quite a few games, but he's not the big man in charge of that stuff. The games he has himself lead development in the last generations (Knack) have been games very much focused on gameplay, although clearly not as good as this one.

It's even more baffling given that the GaaS model was copied wholesale from mobile gacha. And, the simple truth, repeated almost yearly by mobile devs, is that the majority of such games bomb, with a couple massive standouts, and a few filter-feeders picking up crumbs.

I genuinely don't understand why would a company invest $100+ million into a single title, knowing the risks. Better to spread that money around on smaller projects, and design them with scalability in mind, to expand on the initial concept if/when one of them sticks the landing.

He has always been the inner businessman go to between studios, he is literally a consultant. He developed the Method Process so if studios are failing to produce titles why the fuck he should not be blamed. He got his hands all over the processes that drive sony engine.

I think this is great. I have been longing for this genre to make a comeback on Sony platforms.

Personally, I tried out that Astro Bot game you got for free, but found it quite dull and without that wonderful Nintendo magic. The sequel doesn't really look very inspired design-wise, but might be very entertaining nevertheless. I don't think Astro Bot should (yet) be compared to Nintendo games as it'd be like comparing NCAA Basketball to NBA, but as the first steps this looks very promising. It can absolutely mature into something nearing Mario games.

I love Astrobot but my PSN avatar is still the OG

I just watched the trailer for the first time when it looks great. If I had a PS5 I'd buy it day one. I'd love it if PlayStation could bring back their dormant previous gen ips and become something kind of like Nintendo is, ip wise

Really deserved, It's just pure old fashioned fun from the get go. No BS, no mordern audience shite, just gameplay in the purest sense. It's amazing.

Hopefully this will make Sony realise that this is what people want to play. Doubt it. I would like to think that Microsoft is watching this and is thinking wait, we own Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Banjo Kazooie, we can have a piece of that, but I doubt that either. Just look at Hi Fi Rush. What makes Nintendo good is that when Breath of the Wild sold 30 million copies, they made a direct sequel and not a GAAS version of Zelda. Same with Mario etc. They know what they are good at and they make more of it. The sad part is that we are going to get more Concord like games from Sony going forward than this. I want to be wrong.

Hey, I like Sackboy a lot (I even have the plush edition). The games were not that great (a bit janky and 30fps + stutters definitely didn't help) but I still think Media Molecule should have focused on making Sackboy the mascot of their "game". They should have done a Sackboy Maker instead of Dreams and its lack of charisma (and lack of compelling characters).

He's one of the main reason why Naughty Dog went from making crap like Way of the Warrior to making Crash Bandicoot.

He was instrumental in making the gameplay enjoyable.

Not to mention his work on Sonic 2 on the MegaDrive

Can't believe this. In a sane world kid shit shouldn't score past a 7. Why nintendo and kids games receive such pass is baffling. Grow the fuck up. Fuck them kids

Just because you don't like it means that the rest of us are 'insane' and should 'grow the fuck up'.

Mark Cerny designed Marble Madness when he was 20 years old.

People said the same thing about the packed game and it was overhyped tech demo crap. I mean, it was decent for what it was: a packed in tech demo.

I hope this is actually good.

After reading all this, you could've just answered to midnightAI midnightAI "no, i don't know what Mark Cerny does. let me do my research"

Holy shit.

And "Returnal, Stellar Blade, Astrobot are keeping Playstation afloat"...those 3 games (so far) have probably sold like 3M copies together and no one is buying a Playstation to play Stellar Blade or Returnal, lmao.

bro is everywhere trying to downplay it

have a rest lilbro

Pretty good turnaround for what in all probability is the Knack team.
A good chunk of the game designers started with The Playroom, TP VR and Astro Bot Rescue Mission. The rest are Knack, Gravity Rush, Demon's Souls and The Last Guardian staff.
