In all honesty, there is more intelligent debate in official, media and fan circles about AFL than there is about politics in this country.
The last several years have seen an absolutely disgraceful descent into the non sequitur, offensive, bile-ridden prejudice and outright hatemongering. On all sides.
I would damn well vote for a fucking Lannister if one dared show up in the real world. That's how disillusioned with Australian politics I am now.
It truly is the carnival of stupid.
And that's why AFL talk is better in here than politics.

I actually didn't mind Howard all that much. I mean, some of his policies were crap and the attitude of some of his bread and butter voters sickens me, but he did some good (GST versus the old sales taxes, for instance). Abbott, on the other hand, would be one fail after another and what's worse is that he'd think he was doing a good job. Cronulla was totally different altogether. No shops were trashed, only anyone unfortunate enough to look ethnic that day.
If anything, the Redfern riot triggered by the death of Thomas Hickey was much more inline with the cause and effect of the London riots.

The Cronulla 'riot' was a mess. It was meant to be an opportunity for the locals to sort out one particular gang of ethnic teens from Western Sydney that had been coming down every weekend and causing all kinds of shit, culminating in the bashing of a life-saver.
Now keep in mind that Cronulla itself isn't inherently racist, my father-in-law lives in Cronulla, he's Chinese and he ran a charcoal chicken shop in the middle of the main drag for 20 years without incident, but everybody has their breaking points.
Unfortunately, dickheads like Alan Jones starting joining in and spreading the message, so what happened was every West Sydney dick that had been causing shit in Cronulla stayed home that day, and every dickhead white supremacist in Australia jumped into their Bedford van and drove to Cronulla so they could bash anyone with a dark skin.
Just embarrassing for all involved.
