Yeah it is a bit huge and mostly only makes sense vertically. For me it's ok but I did had to modify ikea kallax to make it fit vertically. ps4 slim was sitting there invisibly

I have it sitting on my desk next to my monitor and while it is larger than other consoles, it is much much smaller than my gaming PC. Really, this size isn't an issue at all for me, personally. Sony made decisions you don't agree with and that is fine, but that doesn't make them incompetent.

Using liquid metal to try to get vapor chamber performance out of a common and cheap hestsink with pipes is actually really smart.
Price is a key factor that is ignored but for Sony it is really important to have a console that is already profitable at 500$. Just like it was important to have something that could be launched starting a 399$.
Also the whole idea of boosting frequencies as much as they could designing for a certain max power consumption was an other great idea that allowed to get the best performance out of a smaller chip that not only is cheaper but allowed for better hardware supply in the short term and will allow for huge savings once it's shrinked down furtherly in 2022/2023.

I've just learned additional details that the revised PS5's APU is lower nanometer than original PS5. We also know that the fan is different and has more blades. These are only the details we know about.
The culmination of all these changes in the revised PS5 is still not yet known. We may even find it runs COOLER. Time will tell.
EDIT: Sorry, the 6nm is coming later. I saw it asserted in the comments section of an article but the guy was clearly wrong. I should have fact-checked that better.

You know the same fan be applied to Gamer Nexus. The difference is that Gamer Nexus will do actual tests to back up his claims. Like he won't call it worse if his tests don't show that. Same thing with his comments of performance getting worse due to the heat.
I'm expecting a lot less people to get mad at him because he will do a much better job proving his claims.

Anyway, if you had watched the video you would know he talks about potential reduced lifespan, speed degradation due to throttling, overheating, etc. He meant worse when he wrote it... Even tho he has no clue what he is talking about.
To be fair I have seen other "tech" YouTubers use the thermal camera "technique" to measure hardware temps, on PC which is just strange as you can get temps from a CPU or many other components much more reliably, with the relevant data.
That Austin guy is a tool for MS marketing.

The poll here asks whether people agree with his opinions and I feel that in itself has been an issue as it shouldn't be about opinions. In terms of the differences between the two consoles and measuring temperature differences there are basic scientific ways to get obtain benchmarks and compare them reviewed by peers much as you would with anything scientific.
The other thread had it's title changed to something about the new version outputting more heat than the earlier version but in all honesty, he hasn't done anything to establish that is accurate and I feel the title of that thread really flatters his authority in what is essential his profession.
I know that if I'd presented work that was even approaching the quality of the work that he's presented in his profession that I would have quite correctly had my contract terminated years ago. I struggle to believe that what he showed in that video is genuinely the best that he is capable of, it makes no sense to me that somebody would be willing to present what they much know is such low quality work and also do it in such a public manner.
Although that is the only video of his that I've watched I genuinely feel sorry for him if considers what he did to be the correct way to obtain scientific results.

Serious question Bernd, did you watch the other video Kingtrhash shows of austin? It shows him showing off xbox series x running at similar temp from exhaust yet says nothing about possible degradation of performance or life span of console.
He literally covers xbox and uses same methodology and its heat output doesn't come into question at all. Yet new re-engineered PS5 that puts out literally the same temp as xbox series x is going to have less life span or performance hits?
How is that logic sound? And if Austin wasn't a product guy and actually had engineering degree, he would know that there are different ways within thermal dynamics to dissipate heat with smaller to larger coolers with difference in density's, material, and fan designs to get the same endgoal.
It's almost like he never understands that when your building something that you always over engineer then refine it as more real world use data comes back to their engineers. He acts like Sony hasnt been making products longer than many other companies?
Like why are they the only company using liquid metal? Why is sony using a almost cyclone/blower style fan but with wider fins that have a curvature to them compared to previous. Possibly they had that copper plate there to over compensate for heat absorption.
But because of the surface area it covers, thats more area occupied by something thats going to have transfer of heat through it, so any empty space that could have cool ambient temperature by air entering through the side vents is now less effective because of the larger area the copper plate occupies. SO the fan has to actually work harder to expel the heat and also create more suction through front/side vents to bring in cool air.
So if you remove the copper plate and some of the heatsink more cool air can occupy the space, and with that combined with the new fan can get more cool air that compensates for any increase in core temp. So there for everything is still within spec, and the console is even quieter than previous making it possibly more efficient.
The fact he had it apart, and didn't look hard that there's obvious a different fan, to me shows he did not do this for the sake of being accurate. He wanted to show the innards because of weight change, and made conclusions that its automatically worse without any other forethought on literally every company that does redesigns based on data from people who have the product and extensive testing past release.
He's not good as a technical engineer, he knows how to operate a product and nothing more than that, then when people call him out and point to other sites that ask those questions about his methodology in how he got to those claims he plays the victim.
Now getting Doxx'd and death threats sucks, but if your a professional and have the capital you can set your company/organization up so that stuff really never gets to you or you understand that being in the public eye in entertainment it's going to happen.

Austin is out of his depth outside of showing off products, when it comes to in-depth analysis he falls short every time and all of his product videos have to be taken as that because if you can't give valid in-depth analysis and testing then how are you suppose to have a better understanding of engineered specific designs for products?

Exactly, - they wen't through all the hustle to figure out how to apply liquid metal which by itself is more expensive the na thermal paste) on a global production scale in the manufacturing process, and then the console still requires quite a lot of copper and aluminum, which again, aren't cheap. So I really cannot see their solution being justified considering the drawbacks, did they really saved THAT much money, if any at all?

Nothing about the PS5 cooling solution is cheap and easy.

Considering the liquid metal doesn’t degrade they probably saved themselves a lot of bad rep and having to replace units with wrongfully applied thermal paste (which has been an issue with both PS3 and PS4, to at least some extent).
Edit: By bad rep I mean all the ”my ps4 sounds like a jet engine”.
